Hand 4: Suit Quality Test |
Show Detail |
East opens 1♦ . Should North overcall?
The suit is good enough for a 1-level overcall. Even if you use the Suit Quality Test then 5 cards plus 2 Honours (remember the 10 is an honour) equals 7..
8 Points is borderline vulnerable but fortune favours the brave and you don't mind a Spade lead
Those that do overcall 1♠ should see South raise to 3♠ (level of the fit) which gets passed out for 1-off and a good score.

Hand 8: Saving partner from a guess |
Show Detail |
North has a 1♦ opening using the rule of 20. East overcalls 2♣ and South bids 2♥ showing five Hearts. North bids 3♥ and South with a LTC=6 bids 4♥ .
This doesn't look a good contract with South looking at lots of Black Suit losers.
South's best hope is that the Diamonds break 3-3 and he can discard two Black losers on the long Diamonds.
Imagine that West leads the ♠ A and then switches to a Club.
If West leads the ♣ 8 and Dummy plays low then East is on a guess as to who has the ♣ Q and may, erroneously play the ♣ A allowing South to make the contract
West should make it easy for partner and play the ♣ Q ensuring no Club tricks for declarer
