Observations on watching hands being played.
Try Bidding this hand!
We played this hand on Friday night and went three off in our eventual contract. See if you can bid it correctly.
Gerber
Tonight I saw three pairs make a mess of Gerber!
When I ask why they use it they all reply "It keeps it low."
I think they must mean their score!!
Using Gerber to find a NT Slam
After West's 1NT opening East can see a minimum of 29 HCP but with such a strong suit might a slam be there?
East uses Gerber to ask for Aces and finds that West has two, in and .
With first round controls in all suits East uses Gerber to ask for Kings.
West replies that they hold one King.
East has 10 certain tricks and it is worth the 6NT bid.
North is likely  to lead the 9 (top of an internal sequence). East risks the Queen finesse for South to be on lead.
From that point on the small slam can be made.
Moysian Fit
A Moysian fit is a 4-3 fit in a major. Sometimes it is safe to do this. Indicators are hands with a void or singleton. In other words, hands that present ruffing opportunities
East opens 1 and West shows their 4 card major with a 1 response.
East can't bid their suit (Reverse and it would show 5), should they bid that poor quality suit again?
They have a singleton and so there are ruffing opportunities.
Bid 2 and say "Moysian fit" when your Partner gives you a black look!!
Don't draw trumps. The likely lead is the unbid major so take the lead and lead 4 to A
Lose the 6 and then have fun cross ruffing.
What should North bid?
2 Stayman.
If any reply from Opener improves the playing chances of your weak hand then ignore the points and use Stayman.
North will pass any reply that South makes.
With this hand South will bid 2 but any reply including a 2 negative improves the playing chances of this hand.
1NT will go one down.
2 can make +2
2 would make +1
2 would make +2
Stayman for Four, Transfers for more
But what if you had five s and four s????
Even though you have five use Stayman.
If Partner responded with then play in s.
If they deny a four card major (2) then bid 2.
Finesse the King
When you hold Ace Queen in Dummy how can you try to make the Queen?

The answer is to lead towards the Queen from your hand.
If the King isn't played on your left then play the Queen. If the King is played you take it with the Ace.

If your left hand opponent had the King you will now make the Ace and the Queen.

If The King was held by the right hand opponent you will always lose to it.

This is your best chance of making both.
The "Aussie" 4NT
Catherine and Dave introduced this.
If you have two five card minors with at least a couple of honours in each then overcall 4NT.
Partner chooses their better minor.
Expect to be doubled.Expect to go off!
Probably best played when non vulnerable.
Points and Hand Evaluation
What should South bid?
With 11 points you will be tempted to bid 2NT(11-12) or you may use the 2 bid to show 11 points.
With Supported honours KQ, a long suit with intermediates (10) and K10 this hand is worth more. Bid 3NT!
