Club competitions

The club runs two types of competitions:

One-off events

Teams of four

Handicaps are calculated for each pair, this handicap being based on scores from the preceding season.  Players in the event are then divided equally into "seeded" and "non-seeded" partnerships.  Teams are made up by pairing seeded and non-seeded partnerships by ballot.

Members will be asked to sign up for this event two weeks before it takes place to enable calculation of handicaps.

Hood Trophy

This is a mixed pairs event.  Players may not play with their regular partner.

Members will be asked to sign up for this event in advance.

Jim Ferguson Quaich

This is a pairs event in which players are required to use a simple bidding system: Standard Acol with a weak no trump.  Stayman, transfers and simple Blackwood are the only conventions allowed.

John Adamson Individual Trophy

The individual competition requires that a simplified system is played as above.

Handicap shields

Two events, one in the Winter (late November), the other in the Spring (early March).

MPs are awarded based on ranked results, then handicaps are applied to determine the winners of the shields.  The handicaps are based on the preceding season's average scores.

Cumulative events finalised at the end of the year

Kinnarchie Cup

This is awarded to the pair with the highest cumulative score over the season.

The score is calculated as the average of the best 12 percentage scores from 20 designated events (marked with a ♠  on the calendar).  A pair must play a minimum of 12 events to qualify.

Interim ranking is calculated on a weekly basis and posted under the "Competitions" button on the website.

Hettie Kay Salver (Handicapped)

This is awarded to the individual with the highest cumulative score, with handicaps applied to all players on the basis of their performance in this competition in the preceding season.

Club members can only be eligible for this competition following their first year of membership so that handicaps may be calculated in a fair manner.

Gold ranked players are not eligible for this competition.

The score is calculated as the average of the best 12 percentage scores from 20 designated events (marked with a ♠  on the calendar).  A player must play a minimum of 12 events to qualify.

Interim ranking is calculated on a weekly basis and posted under the "Competitions" button on the website.

Lynn Begg Memorial Trophy

This is awarded to the pair, both ranked Bronze below 3-Star Master, with the highest cumulative score in the Kinnarchie Cup events.

District events

Central District Pairs

Eight evenings before Christmas are selected as qualifying rounds (marked with a   on the calendar).  The order of merit is determined by summing up the best five percentage scores of each pair.  Central District allocates places in the semi-final to clubs in proportion to their entry.

Local Points are awarded for club heats (x2 club scale).  For the overall ranking list, bonus MP awards are made to the top third of the field with a top award of 500 Local Points.

Easter Pairs
