LOTL - Lancs Online Teams
LCBA Online Teams of 4 League(LOTL) on BBO - New/Returning team registration form
♠   ♣

The Lancashire Contract Bridge Association (LCBA) runs an online teams-of-4 bridge league. This is a great opportunity for club players to form teams to play organised bridge online. Matches are played on BBO so all players will need a BBO account which is free and easy to set up. You should have some experience of playing online bridge before the start of the league. Each league cycle (i.e. season) lasts three months, and the cost is £22 per team per cycle. Matches are 14 boards and are pre-scheduled for Thursdays at 7pm with spare weeks inbuilt for any rearrangements. Each captain receives a list of all their season's fixtures and the home team captain sets up the match on BBO (click here to find out how).  Results and team rosters are entered on the EBU's League Management System . Away captains need to let the home team captain know their BBO player names for the match before the day of the match.

  • The league is played on BBO;
  • The league is open to any bridge player with a BBO account but the captain must be an EBU member
  • All matches scheduled for 7pm on a Thursday each week and a fixture list will be published in advance.
  • The league is held over a 3 month period and repeated each quarter
  • Teams of all levels of experience are very welcome – novice to expert.  There are a number of divisions consisting of around 7-8 teams but this depends on the total number of entries for each league cycle;
  • Squads consist of 4 or more players – any 4 of which can play in any match;
  • Matches are 14 boards; The default is 2 x 7 boards with change of opponents unless both captains prefer a single 14 board set.
  • New teams are allocated to a division by the organisers, based on any NGS data or any other playing information available;
  • Normally, 2 teams are promoted and 2 relegated every cycle of the league;
  • The league is affiliated to the EBU but NGS will not be applicable;
  • The current charge is £22/team/cycle. This payment is charged to the captain's Lancashire account.
  • ‘Away’ captains are responsible for informing, by email or text, the ‘Home’ captain of their line-up by 5pm on the day of the match;
  • ‘Home’ captains are responsible for:
    • Ensuring all their players are registered;
    • Setting up the match on BBO;
    • Registering the result on the EBU’s League Management System;

League standings will be published on the EBU website.

LOTL Team Allocation

How the organising committee will allocate teams to divisions from season to season

  1. The OC will first decide on how many divisions there should be and how many teams there should be in each division. This will depend on how many teams have entered and whether the numbers are going up or down.
  2. Having established the season’s structure then the OC will populate it using the following principles:
    1. If it is not necessary to grow or shrink any divisions from the previous season then 2 up, 2 down will apply.
    2. If there are multiple joiners or leavers then we will first decide if, in order to maintain the balance of the divisions, we need to re-structure the whole league from top to bottom.  If this is not necessary, then:
    3. When we need to grow a division and 1 extra team is needed, the OC has the following options:
      1. Allow suitably qualified new team(s) to take the available slot(s);
      2. Promote an extra team;
      3. Relegate one team less.

In general, joiners enter the league in the lowest division, but the OC consider it not to be in the league’s overall best interest to have teams in completely the wrong division, if this can be avoided. The OC will therefore use option i) first.  If there is no suitable joiner, then the OC will compare (in VP’s), how far the relegated team was from safety with how far away the other team was from promotion. If the VP difference is the same, then the OC will choose option ii) – promote an extra team.

If 2 extra teams are needed and there are 2 suitable joiners, then option i) will be used. If there is only 1 suitable joiner, the joining team will be used first and then the VP comparison used to decide between ii) and iii) for the additional place. If there are no suitable joiners, then the OC will promote one team more and relegate one team less.

If more than 2 extra teams are needed, then the OC will use the above principles to make its decision.

  1. When we need to shrink a division then
      1. If 1 team less is required, then the OC will relegate one team more;
      2. If 2 teams less are required, then the OC will promote one team less and relegate one team more;
      3. If a division is short by more than 2, then the OC will use the above principles to make its decision.
    1. If the OC believes, in any particular situation, that the best interests of the league are served by varying these conditions, then they reserve the right to do so.
