Lancashire has a bridge club in most of its major towns. Several clubs have a host system to ensure you can get a game. Contact details and club times are on the Clubs page though its sensible to check before attending a new club. Clubs with beginners and intermediate classes are also listed on the Clubs page. The website has details of forthcoming competitions and results. If your club is not affiliated you may become a direct member of the EBU. This entitles you to play in all Lancashire competitions, be eligible for Lancashire Teams, and attend all Lancashire Council Meetings

There were seven tables at the Lancashire Butler Pairs Competition held at Lytham BC starting at 1:30pm on Saturday 23Jan2016. The winners were Bernard & Rhona Goldenfield with Jeff Smith and Jackie Pye second. As always, the food was at its usual excellent standard. Full details in the results section.
There were only five teams at the annual Team of 8 final held at Bury Bridge Club on 14th Feb 2016. The winners were Preston BC (A Lum/J Brearley, A Petrie/B Alston, D Hilton/D Fazackerley, N Sutcliffe/M Tomlinson) and they will represent Lancashire CBA on 7th May in the Garden Cities Regional Final at Bradford. The LCBA Championship Pairs at Blackburn BC had 14 tables (with one missing pair) and was expertly run again by John Pyner. The fomat was the usual qualifier followed by a 14 pair all-play-all final (with carry forward) and a consolation final. The winners were Andrew Lum/David Costich, with Anne Burgess/John Dearing second, Nick/Sue Woodcock third and Dave Debbage/Andrew Woodcock fourth and these pairs have qualified to represent Lancashire CBA in the Corwen Trophy on the 4th/5th June 2016 at Birmingham Airport. Successes at this weekend Cumbria Congress...
Congrats to Nick Woodcock & Sue Fortorft on winning the main Pairs event and to Catherine Draper & Andrew Woodcroft, Keith Ashford & Michael Prior on winning the main Teams event with Sue Woodcock & Stuart Clarke, Nick Woodcock & Sue Fortorft second. Full Results on Cumbria Bridgewebs site.
In the Northern Easter Festival at Ilkley, Jeff Smith and Jackie Pye teamed up with Peter Stocken and Phillip Mason to win the Swiss Teams. Bill Wattleworths team (B&L Wattleworth, P Richmond & R Allison) finished 4th and Jeff Wilkins team (J & A Wilkins, J Halliwell & L Smith) finished 6th.
In the Swiss Pairs, the leading Lancashire players were J Halliwell/LSmith in 8th place and B & L Wattleworth in 10th place.

The Team of 4 knockout competitions have now reached their final stages. In the Cup, Barnes will play Mitchell, in the Plate, Brearley will play Wattleworth

The Preston Pairs on 17th April 2016 had a full house of 11 tables. Winners were B & R Goldenfield, closely followed by S Clarke/S Woodcock with C Draper/A Woodcock in third place. Full results available on Preston Bridge Club Bridgewebs site.
Mitchell (C Mitchell/B Alston, J Smith/J Pye) beat Barnes (A Barnes/R Greenhalgh, S Norris/D King) by 23 Imps in the LCBA Team of 4 Final of 32 boards. The Mitchell team will represent Lancashire in the Pachabo on 11/12 June 2016 at Holiday Inn Birmingham.

The Madeleine Berney Trophy held at Brierfield had 10 tables and was won by Paddy Murphy and Mark Weeks with Paul Evans & Alan Whittam second, Tony & Alex Wilkinson third. Full details on results page.
The Garden Cities Regional Final was held at Bradford Bridge Club on Sat 7th May. The Preston Bridge Club team of 8 finished 4th out of the six teams. Manchester BC and Deva BC qualified for the final.
Brian Senior and John Holland won the 2016 Blackburn BC Open Swiss Pairs. In second place were David Hammonds and Paul Beckwith, and third were Rhona and Bernard Goldenfield.
There were fourteen tables in play and Paul Hepworth directed the event.
Brearley (R Shine, D.Hilton, D Fazackerley) beat Wattleworth (L Wattleworth, G & M McConkey) in the LCBA Team of 4 Plate Final.
The LCBA AGM took place at Bolton Bridge Club on 16th May 2016. Bill Alston will take over as Chairman, Brian Irlam as Vice Chairman and John Brearley as Secretary. Barry Brelsford retired as Secretary (after 29 years!) and Jacqueline retired as Tournament Secretary (after 8 years) and received a presentation of flowers from the Chairman.To fill the vacancies, Barry Brelsford will continue with his Treasurer role and Barry and Jacqueline will share the Tournament. Secretary role for at least the next year while a new Officer is found for that role. The LCBA Team of 4 competitions will be managed separately by Jeff Smith who is hoping to run them using the new EBU Cup/Plate facility.

David Debbage playing with Andrew Woodcock finished fourth in the inter-county pairs on June 4-5th 2016. There were 98 pairs in the competition. Full results on EBU website.
Stuart Norris & Rod Greenhalgh, Des King & Jeff Smith playing for Lancashire finished 14th of 27 Teams in the Pachabo held at Birmingham Airport Hotel on June 11-12 2016. Full results on the EBU site.
The East Lancs and Fylde Leagues for the 2015-16 season are now complete. The Fylde League Team of 8 A Division was won by Bolton A team. The East Lancs League Team of 4 A Division was won by S Challinor & T Wilkinson, A Kirby & B Dormand. The Sarker Cup was won by J Morrell & J Smith, P & H Williams. The Lancashire team (J Brearley/R Shine, N & S Woodcock, M Nicholson/D King, D Williams/B Winter) finished 2nd of the 8 teams in the Presidents Cup held at Bradford on the 19/20 June 2016. Congratulations to Catherine Draper who was part of the England Women's team which won the European Championships in Budapest, Hungary.The England Team starting the final day in third place, won all three matches, including victory against overnight leaders Poland in the final match.The whole team was Heather Dhondy, Nevena Senior, Sally Brock & Nichola Smith, Catherine Draper & Fiona Brown NPC Derek Patterson, Coach David Burn.Further Details on EBU WebSite. Lancashire finished runners up to Warwickshire in the National Inter County League B Final 2016 held at Coventry Bridge Club on Jul 10. The Lancs team was represented by J Brearley/D Hilton, P Evans/A Whittam, M Farr/J Morrell and B Carr/S Clarke. Full Results at: NICL Results
The annual Lancashire v Cumbria match took place on Sunday 10th July at Barrow Bridge Club with Lancashire winning by 116 Imps. This was a very friendly encounter, well run by Ken Johnson with an excellent meal courtesy of the Barrow Club staff. In the A division at Brierfield, Lancashire (Jeff Smith/Jackie Pye, John Morrell/Marianne Farr, Don Hilton/Dagmar Fazackerley, Paul Hepworth/Rick Bentley) finished 4th of 6 teams. Jeff & Jackie and Paul & Rick were the best pairs on the cross IMPs.
In the B division at Manchester, Lancashire B (Stuart Clarke/Bill Carr,Stuart Challinor/Tony Wilkinson,Jeff & Ann Wilkins,Nick Sutcliffe/Mike Tomlinson) finished 4th of 8 teams..Stuart & Tony and Jeff & Ann were the best pairs on the cross IMPs.
In the C division, also at Manchester, Lancashire C (Angus Kirby/Brian Dormand,John & Cath Ashworth, Duncan &,Diane Ault,Bill &,Hazel Winter) finished 3rd of 7 teams. Angus & Brian were the best pair finishing top of the cross Imps!.

One Day GP Teams
Congratulations to Jeff Smith who with Alan Nelson, Kath Nelson and Jeff Morris were runaway winners of the annual one day green point Manchester Swiss Teams held at Altrincham on Sunday 24th July. In the A division at Brierfield, Lancashire (Jeff Smith/Andrew Petrie, Paul Williams/John Morrell/Marianne Farr, Colin Mitchell/Bill Alston, Mike Nicholson/Des King) won the A Division finishing 2 VPs ahead of Manchester.
In the B division at Manchester, Lancashire B (Brian Ripley (capt)/Ken Renno, Paul Evans/Alan Whittam, Mike Tomlinson/Nick Sutcliffe, Jeff & Ann Wilkins) finished 6th of 8 teams.
In the C division, also at Manchester, Lancashire C (Barry Brelsford/Jacqueline Wright, Bill & Liz Wattleworth, Les Hoy/Brian Apfel, Pauline Holden/Dave Pendlebury) finished 3rd of 7 teams.

At the EBU Northern Midweek Congress held at Wakefield, the three session Championship Pairs was won by Jeff Smith & Jackie Pye (just ahead of John Dakin & Eddie Lucioni). In the Teams, Duncan & Diane Ault, John & Cath Ashworth finished 3rd behind two strong Yorkshire based teams and were the leading 'B stratified' team. Teams shall have four, five or six players only four of whom may play in any one match. All must be paid-up EBU members with primary allegiance to Lancashire. Members may be added to a team, free of charge, at any time prior to the final round and subject to a maximum team of six. No player may represent more than one team in the competition. This is a green pointed event; points will be awarded to the winners of each match.The overall winners will hold the Blackburn Bridge Club Cup for one year. Teams losing their first match will be entered into a Plate competition run on similar lines to the main event but with a 24 board final.The Cup winners, or failing them the runners-up, are eligible to represent Lancashire in the Pachabo Cup. Their entry fee will be paid but they will be expected to pay any other expenses which may be incurred.
As an incentive for Club TD training, LCBA will give a £10 refund on the day to any LCBA member attending a course!
Bolton Bridge Club will be hosting a Club TD Training Course over 4 sessions on the dates below. The third round of Northern league matches took place on Saturday 10th September.
In the A division at Bradford, Lancashire were second on the day and lie 3rd overall just 4 VPs behind Yorkshire and 8 Vps behind Manchester. The team was John Brearley/Ross Shine, Colin Mitchell/Bill Alston, Paul Hepworth/Ross Shine, Cros Croswell/Degsy Williams. Cros & Degsy were 2nd and John & Ross 3rd on the cross IMPs.
The B division was played at Keighley where our team of David Costich/Andrew Lum,Stuart Clarke/Bill Carr, Des King/Mike Nicholson,Brian Ripley/Barrie Newall were 3rd on the day and lie 3rd overall, 1 VP behind Manchester and 5 VPs behind Cumbria. Des & Mike were 5th and David & Andrew 7th on the on the cross IMPs.
The C division was played at Brierfield where our team of Judy Brearley/David Pendlebury, Bill & Liz Wattleworth, Alan Crabtree/David Spencer, Robin Atkinson/Pauline Holden finished 3rd and lie 2nd overall a few VPs behind Yorkshire NW. Alan & David, closely followed by Bill & Liz were our best pairs on cross IMPs.

The LCBA Mixed pairs had a good turnout of 18 pairs at Lytham BC on Sat 18th September. The winners were Jeff Smith & Jackie Pye just 1 matchpoint ahead of Nick Woodcock & Sue Fjortoft with Dave Briggs & Yvonne Dickinson 3rd. The all-play-all was smoothly run by Rob Turner and thanks also to Barrie Brelsford, Jacqueline Wright & the Lytham, BC ladies who organised an excellent dinner. The C division was played at Manchester where our team of Angus Kirby/Brian Dormand,Barry Brelsford/Jacqueline Wright, John Ashworth,Cath Ashworth,Brian Apfel/Les Hoy finiished 1st on the day but 2nd overall a few VPs behind Yorkshire SE. Brian & Les finished 3rd on cross IMPs.

The 2016 Haley Cup goes to Jeff Smith and Jackie Pye. This Cup was donated in 2013 by Steve Haleys widow Shirley and will be awarded each year for the best performing pairs in the NBL A Division based on the CrossImps from at least two appearances. The Cup will be presented at the forthcoming LCBA Congress. The previous winners were Degsy Wiliams & Cros Croswell (2013), Austin Barnes & Stuart Norris (2014) and Bill Alston & Colin Mitchell (2015).
The LCBA Congress was once again expertly run by John Pyner with the Swiss Pairs at Brierfield on Saturday and Swiss Teams at Blackburn on Sunday. There were 17 tables at the Swiss Pairs which was won by Jeff Smith/Andrew Petrie, second Oliver Cowan/Alan Hayward, third Bernard & Rhona Goldenfield. There were 13 teams at the Swiss Teams with the winners Jeff Smith/Jackie Pye, Alan & Kath Nelson, second Marianne Farr/John Morrell Paul & Hilda Williams. The full rankings are on the Results page.
The Pendle Witch Pairs held on Sunday 13th November 2016 at Brierfield BC attracted 17 Tables. It was won by Boris Ewart & Peter Foster who finished just a single matchpoint ahead of the leading Lancashire pair John Brearley & Andrew Lum !

Lancashire team just failed to qualify for the final on a split tie with Manchester in the Inter county teams of eight on 19-20th Nov. in Birmingham. The team of Jeff Smith, Jackie Pye, Paul Hepworth, Rick Bentley, Nick & Sue Woodcock, Derek Williams, Cros Croswell, John Brearley and Ross Shine represented Lancashire though due to a family illness, Derek had to to go home after two sets on the Sunday. Paul & Rick were the leading pair on the CrossImps ranking. Full results on the EBU site
I am delighted to report that two Lancashire members were given awards at today's EBU AGM. A Gold Award - the EBU's highest award - was presented to Andrew Petrie for his service on the EBU Board, and most recently to English Bridge Education and Development. The Tony Priday Award - for making an outstanding contribution to bridge and enhancing the game in all its aspects - was given to Jeffrey Smith for his work in County administration and in developing bridge software which he made available free of charge.Andrew thanked the EBU saying that the voluntary bridge work done by people at all levels is the backbone that supports the EBU in the promotion of bridge.
Winners at Llangollen over the weekend of 3rd-4th December were Bernard and Rhona Goldenfield, John Holland and Jackie Pye ahead of Michael Byrne, Fiona Brown, Ciaran Coyne and Hugh McGann. Congratulations to them; full results are on the North Wales site.

Kenneth Renno and Brian Ripley were runners-up and last year's winners David Hammonds and Paul Worswick were third.
