Lancashire has a bridge club in most of its major towns. Several clubs have a host system to ensure you can get a game. Contact details and club times are on the Clubs page though its sensible to check before attending a new club. Clubs with beginners and intermediate classes are also listed on the Clubs page. The website has details of forthcoming competitions and results. If your club is not affiliated you may become a direct member of the EBU. This entitles you to play in all Lancashire competitions, be eligible for Lancashire Teams, and attend all Lancashire Council Meetings

Northern Year End Congress Dec 27-29 2015

Congratulation to Jeff Smith / Jackie Pye finishing runnerup to John Holland / Alan Mould in the Northern Year End Swiss Pairs at Dukenhalgh.

Lytham Rose Bowl

There were 11 tables at the annual Lytham Rose Bowl at Lytham BC with the event run most efficiently by David Stevenson. Winners were Paul Worswick & Dave Hammonds, second Paul Evans & Alan Whittam, third Les Hoy & Brian Afnel. As usual, refreshments were excellent. See Results section for final rankings.

Steve Haley Cup 2015

The 2015 Haley Cup goes to Bill Alston and Colin Mitchell. This Cup was donated by Steve Haleys widow Shirley and will be awarded each year for the best performing pairs in the NBL A Division based on the CrossImps from at least two appearances. The Cup will be presented at the forthcoming LCBA Congress. The Cup was won last year by Austin Barnes/Stuart Norris and in its inaugural year by Degsy Williams and Cros Croswell.

LCBA Congress 24/25 Oct 2015

The LCBA Congress had 15 Tables on Bolton for the Swiss Pairs and similar for the Blackburn Swiss Teams. Once again it was most ably run by John Pyner.

Winners of the GP Swiss Pairs were Austin Barnes and Des King. Winners of the GP Swiss Teams were Paul Hackett, Jason Hackett, Brian Senior and Adrian Kenworthy.  See the Results section for the full results.

England Bronze - Well done Catherine!

Congratulations to Catherine Draper who was part of the England's Women's team that won a bronze medal in the Venice Cup at the World Championships in Chennai. They finished fifth in the round-robin phase of the competition and then went on to beat USA1 by a good margin in the quarterfinal. More information on the EBU website.

Northern Bridge League Match 4 10Oct15

The fourth and final matches of this season's Northern league took place at Bolton, Bradford and Leeds on Saturday 10th October for the A, B and C teams respectively.
In the A division Lancashire finished 3rd = on the day and 3rd overall in the final Table. The team was A Barnes/R Greenhalgh, P & H Williams, S Norris/D King, J Smith/J Pye.

In the B division, Lancashire won on the day and were 1st overall for the third consecutive year! The team was J Morrell/M Farr, N Sutcliffe/D Costich, B & J Newall, D Hilton/D Fazackerley. Don and Dagmar topped the overall CrossImps on the day.

In the C division, Lancashire were 2nd on the day and 2nd overall.  The team was Les Hoy, Brian Apfel, Duncan/Diane Ault, Linda Wilson/Brian Perry, Angus Kirby/Brian Dormand. Angus and Brian topped the overall CrossImps on the day.

Thanks to all players who have turned out for Lancashire this year and to the NBL organisers, directors, host clubs and caterers for another enjoyable season of inter county bridge.

Congratulations to Jeff Smith & Jackie Pye who along with the Manchester Pair Bernard & Rhona Goldenfield won the Cumbria/Westmorland GP Swiss Teams at Kendal on Sat 26 Sep. Full results are on the Cumbria Bridgewebs site.

Tollemache 21-22 Nov 2015

The team finished a respectable 4th out of the 9 teams in the Tollemache Qualifier held at Birmingham Airport Hotel at the weekend. The team was J.Brearley/R Shine, J Smith/J Pye, B Alston/C Mitchell, P Hepworth/R Bentley, N & S Woodcock. Further details available on the EBU site.

Northern Bridge League 12Sep2015

The third round of four matches took place on Saturday 12th September. 

In the A division at Bradford Lancashire (
Degsy Williams,Croz Croswell,Bill Alston,Colin Mitchell,John Brearley,Ross Shine,Paul Hepworth,Richard Bentley) finished 3rd.  In the cross IMP scoring, Paul & Richard were best finishing 3rd.

In the B division at Keighley Lancashire (
Stuart Clarke,Bill Carr,Mike Tomlinson,Ewart Evans,Paul Evans,Alan Whittam,Brian Ripley,Barrie Newall) finished 4th but still lead overall. Mike and Ewart were our best pairs (4th) on the cross IMPs.

In the C division at Brierfield Lancashire (
Malcolm Fyne,Madeleine Fyne,Liz Wattleworth,Bill Wattleworth,Judy Brearley,David Pendlebury,Robin Atkinson,Pauline Holden) were fifth and now lie fourth overall.  Bill and Liz were our best pair on the cross IMPs.

Northern Bridge League Match2 - 29Aug2015

County teams were in action at Bradford (A and C divisions) and at Blackburn (B division) on Saturday 29th August.

In the A division Lancashire (John Brearley & Ross Shine, Rick Bentley & Paul Hepworth, Des King & Mike Nicholson, Colin Mitchell & Bill Alston) finished 3rd behind Yorkshire 1 and Manchester and lie 3rd overall.  Colin & Bill topped the whole field on cross Imps with John & Ross high in 6th place.

In the B division Lancashire (Marianne Farr & John Morrell, Paul Evans & Alan Whittam, Barrie Newall & Brian Ripley, Andrew Lum & Nick Sutcliffe) finished 1st and retained their 1st place overall with a sizeable lead.  Andrew & Nick topped the whole field on crossImps with Marianne & John high  in 6th place.

In the C division the Lancashire team of Bill Wattleworth,Liz Wattleworth,Barry Brelsford,Jacqueline Wright Judy Brearley,David Pendlebury,Alan Crabtree,David Spencer finished 5th= and now lie in 2nd place overall.

Preston Pairs 2Aug2015

The Preston Pairs was won by Catherine Draper and Andrew Woodcock, with Bill Alston/Colin Mitchell second. There were twelve and a half tables and this popular event was well run with notable contribution from Catherine and Andrew, Veronica Petrie, Gill Armstrong and Mike Rothwell in the organisation. First Session winners were Don/Richard Hilton, Second session winners Mike & Sally-Ann Rothwell.

Presidents Cup

The Lancashire team finished 8th out of 13 teams in the President's Cup held at Derby Bridge Club. The team was A Barnes/J Smith, M Nicholson/D Kay, N & S Woodcock and C Crosswell/D Williams. Final details in the Results section.

Northern Bridge League 1Aug2015

The first round of the Northern League took place on 1st August with a generally good start for Lancashire teams.  

In the A division at Brierfield Lancashire (Michael Nicholson/Des King, Paul Hepworth/Rick Bentley, Colin Mitchell/Bill Alston, Jeff Smith/Jackie) finished 3rd. Colin and Bill were the best Lancashire pair on cross IMPs with Paul/Rick and Jeff/Jackie midway.

In the B division at Leeds Manchester (Alan Whittam/Paul Evans, Don Hilton/Dagmar Fazackerley, Ewart Evans/Mike Tomlinson, John Morrell/Marianne Farr) were 1st finishing 8VPs ahead of Manchester.  On the cross IMPs Alan and Paul were our best pair just ahead of Don and Dagmar with all pairs doing well.


In the C Division at Manchester, Lancashire (Angus Kirby/Brian Dormand, John & Cath Ashworth,John Dearing/Ann Burgess, Veronica Petrie/Ian Edwards) were 2nd and 8VP behind Yorkshire SE.  On the cross IMPs Angus & Brian were best just ahead of John & Cath.

GP Swiss Teams 19Jul2015

Congratulations to Marianne Farr & Mike Nicholson who together with Ray Semp & Alan Williams won the annual GP Swiss Teams event held at Altrincham BC.

 

Lancashire v Cumbria Match 12Jul2015

The annual Lancs v Cumbria match was held at Lytham Bridge Club on 12h July 2015. Lancs were winning by 59 Imps at halftime, but this was overturned in the second half and Cumbria won the match by 18 Imps. As always the food was excellent, and Mike Rothwell ran the event with his usual efficiency. The Captains David Pendlebury and Trevor Ward both spoke of the longstanding friendly nature of the fixture over many years.

EBU Garden Cities 13Jun2015

The Bolton Bridge Club Team representing Lancashire of Austin Barnes/Jeff Smith, Mike Nicholson/Des King, Paul/Hilda William and Stuart Norris/Rod Greenhalgh finished sixth in a strong Garden Cities Team of 8 Final on Saturday 13th June.   They competed against seven other club teams who had qualified from regional finals.  Congratulations to the Manchester Bridge Club members Andrew Woodcock and Catherine Draper who finished in the winning Manchester team.  Full results are on the EBU web site.

We are very sad to announce the death of Margaret Catlow at 85 on Saturday 13th June 2015.
 
Margaret was a member of Blackburn Bridge Club for almost 50 years and, together with her husband Geoff,  contributed greatly to the development and success of Blackburn Bridge Club, including finding and overseeing the move to the current premises. She also served as treasurer for a number of years.
 
Margaret was an exceptionally fine bridge player who was well-known and highly regarded throughout Lancashire with many successes over the years.
EBU Pachabo Cup 6/7 June 2015

Nick & Sue Woodcock, S Clarke & B Carr) representing Lancashire County finished just below midway in the Pachabo Teams of 4 EBU Competition held at West Bromwich last weekend.

Corwen Trophy 30/31 May 2015

In the Corwen Trophy (for which the Championship Pairs qualified four Lancashire Pairs) on 30-31st May, Nick and Sue Woodcock finished fourth, John Brearley and Ross Shine fifteenth, and David Costich and Andrew Lum midway.  Full results are on the EBU web site.

Blackburn Swiss Pairs Sunday May 10

Garden Cities 9 May 2015

The Bolton Bridge Club team, who qualified as our county representatives by winning the Teams of Eight, have qualified for the National final of the Garden Cities winning the regional final at Bradford on Saturday 9th May.  The players were Austin Barnes, Jeff Smith, Paul & Hilda Williams, Stuart Norris, Rod Greenhalgh, Mike Nicholson and Des King. The team arrived late at Bradford taking a long detour, with the M62 closed dues to a potential jumper at the M62 Junction 23 bridge. As other teams were delayed, the start time was generously adjusted by the TD Chris Benneworth so no boards were forfeited. The National final is played on Saturday 13th June 2015 at West Midlands Bridge Club in Solihull, B91 3EP. Play will start at 1pm. Full results on the EBU website.

Madeline Berney Trophy 3May2015

Congratulations to John Morrell and Marianne Farr who won the Madeline Berney Trophy in the Swiss Pairs at Brierfield in Lancashire on Sunday 3rd May. They finished level on VPs with Neil Thomas and Gillian McMullan who they beat in the final round. Full results are in the LCBA Results section.

Sowerby Cup 26Apr15 Cancelled

I am informed the Sowerby Cup at Lancaster BC scheduled on 26Apr has been cancelled due to insufficient numbers.

Charitable Status for Preston Bridge Club
Preston Bridge Club have achieved Charitable Status as from the 1st April 2015. If any affiliated club wishes to investigate Charitable status and has any questions regarding the process etc. Bill Alston is willing to help in whatever way he can. The Hector Barker pivot teams on Sunday 29th March attracted 13 teams. Winners were Judy Brearley, Pauline Holden, Barrie & Julia Newall. As always, this was a very pleasant event with a superb buffet lunch and tea and cake later. Thanks to the hardworking organisers Catherine Draper, George & Maureen McKonkey, scorers Andrew Woodcock & Ollie Burgess, and other Southport members for making this an enjoyable day.

LCBA Teams of 4

The LCBA Teams of 4 has now reached the Final mach with John Brearley's team playing against Sue Woodcock's team. Congratulations to Sue Woodcock's team who beat Brearley in the Final and will represent LCBA in the Pachabo Cup. The 2014/15 LCBA Plate Final is between Wattleworth and Norris.

The LCBA Plate competition is now complete with Stuart Norris's team beating Bill Wattleworth's team in the Final.

Tollemache Final 14/15 Feb 2015

Lancashire finished 6th out of the 8 teams in the Tollemache Final held at the Park Inn, West Brom. The team won 3, drew 1 and lost 3 of its 7 matches. Full results available on the EBU site. 

LCBA Teams of 8

There were 5 teams at the LCBA Teams of 8 competition held at Bury on 8th Feb 2015. The winning team was Bolton represented by Austin Barnes & Jeff Smith, Rod Greenhalgh & Stuart Norris, Mike Nicholson & Des King and Alan Whittam & Paul Evans. The team will represent Lancashire in the Garden Cities Regional Final on Saturday 9th May 2015 at Bradford Bridge Club. Final ranks and details in the Results section.

LCBA Championship Pairs

The LCBA Championship Pairs was well attended with 14 Tables at Blackburn Bridge Club.Sarah Amos ran the event very efficiently and the meal was excellent as always.

Winners were Nick & Sue Woodcock, Second Alan Whittam & Paul Evans, Third John Brearley & Ross Shine and Fourth Andrew Lum & David Costich and they qualify to represent Lancashire in the EBU Corwen Trophy. Full details on the results pages.

There were 15 pairs at the LCBA Butler Pairs held at Lytham BC on Sat 24 Jan 2015. The refreshments as always were excellent. The winners were Marianne Farr and Jeff Smith, second were Sue & Nick Woodcock, third Roger Allison and Peter Richmond. Full details are published on the Results Page.
