Important Start Times

Please ensure that you are in your seats at least 10 minutes before the start of each session. This is important as we have to know the number of pairs to set up the computer and if people are not there it will delay the start - and finish - times. If you are going to be late, please ensure that we know you are coming - you can always ring the club.

Fylde League Results 2016 -2017

This season's Fylde League is now completed for all our teams. Click here to view how they got on.

Spring Clean

In order to tidy up the ever extending number of tabs on the left hand side of the website main page, older competitions  have all been re-labelled and are now under the tab entitled "Competions 2012-2015". If you really want to see them, click on that tab ;you will open a very long list!

The Development Review undertaken in 2013 has also been removed, but is still available if anyone wants to refer to it.

Saturday training sessions

A message from Rose Parker:

Rose and Mariet are coordinating training sessions for beginners and anyone who wants to improve, for example those who have started to play for the D team. These sessions will be monthly to start with until we see how many people are interested. People from Mariet's u3a class will certainly come and in June so will students from Rose's class. The first session will be on Saturday 18 March at the club from 12 til 2 pm.

We will play the boards from the previous Friday so there will be hand records to take home, study etc. Sessions will be closely supervised and supported by experienced members and will be slow, fun and friendly. I couldn't think of three words beginning with F! Players can ask for advice on the bidding, look at crib sheets and generally feel comfortable in asking for help and advice.

These are training sessions to help members to improve and enjoy the game as much as possible in a friendly non-threatening atmosphere. I hope that as many people as possible will feel able to come and enjoy it.

Bridgemate App

Bridgemate have produced an app, allowing players to view real-time scoring results on their Android or Apple devices. It is easy to install - just search for "Bridgemate" on Google Play Store or the App Store, download and then follow the simple instructions. You will then need to register by providing your email address, country and county, then select Lancaster Bridge Club from the list of options. Then you will have to wait for club authorisation before you can use it. (Usually within 1 day)

The app basically has 4 active screens:

1 Overview - shows pair number, direction of play and, in case you forget, your partner's name. Also rounds played, number of boards to play and your current % ranking.
2 Guide card - tells you where to go (more politely than I would) and opponents' names, as well as boards to play.
3 Score card - showscontract, lead, score and % for that board so far.
4 Ranking - shows ranking results for all you and all you are competing against.

The views are repeatedly updated from the club computer via the internet during the session, so you will need internet access to use it live.

Good news - the app is free; bad news - only for 6 months, then £2.99 for 1 year, £4.99 for 2 years.

The club plans to trial use of the app for 6 months, so please ensure that using it does not slow down play, or result in excessive internet usage costs for the club.

Any problems - contact Richard Willey

Club Competitions

The list and format of club competitions held throughout the year has just been revised and can be viewed by clicking here.

Club Handicaps

Members' handicaps have been reviewed and amended. They can be viewed on the Handicaps 2016 tab under Membership on the left. New handicaps will apply to the first and subsequent rounds of the Taylor Cup.

Dealing Rota

We have now had a dealing machine for 4 years and as of 20 Aug 2016, it has produced 30,029 deals, some of which you may have preferred not to play.
Grateful thanks to Chris Evans and Tony Saville for taking on responsibility for running the dealing rota and undertaking future training

Several members have recently undergone training and joined the dealing rota, which now looks healthier than for some time. However, new dealers are still required to avoid over-reliance on a small cohort of members, so if you can help once every few weeks, please let Chris Evans or Tony Saville know.

Mike Cleaver Tutorials

After a break caused by the flood, Mike Cleaver resumed his Monday evening tutorials on 4th July. These will continue on the first Monday of the month, the next being on 5th June 2017. (Postponed until 12th June)

Flooding in Chapel Street

To prevent flood updates taking up too much space on the main page, they have been moved to the Flood Updates tab on the left, where they can remain as a record. Click here to view the latest.

Most recent update added 9 November - Final (?) Update - click to view.

Bridge sessions re-started at Chapel St from Monday 4 July 2016.

Thursday - pink

Friday - dark green

The "B" team plays in Division 3 and is captained by Don McGowan.
The "C" team plays in Division 3  and is captained by Richard Kirkman.
The "D" team plays in Division 4 and is captained jointly by Frank Sutcliffe and Robert Fildes.

Please let any of them know if you are interested in playing for any of the teams.

Details of all matches are available on the Fylde League link page. Click on "Useful Links", then "Fylde League Tables" to see how well they are doing.
Patricia Haskey Cards

As many of you know, Lancaster artist Patricia Haskey has very kindly given us three of her prints on long term loan

I have offered to sell some of her cardsP (made from her prints) in recognition of her generosity.

I have put a file, with full size examples of the cards and order forms in it, on a table in the club.

The cards are a specially reduced LBC price of £2.50 each or - a bargain- 5 for £10.

If you would like to order some please fill an order from the front of the file and leave it on the board for me or hand it to me.

They might make good Christmas presents!

Did you know?

Robobridge (www.robobridge.com ) is free and whilst not the best user interface (no option for claims etc) it is very easy to use with the club website, if you want to play the hands on your own computer.

Go to the club website, log in, click on results and then on the date for which you want to play the hands.

At the top right of the ranking screen click on hands, then on the screen that opens, click 7 – Download as PBN.

Once you have installed Robobridge, click its icon to open it, then “Tournament”, then select “Open local tournament PBN” On the first occasion, you will have to locate the file you have just downloaded from the club website – it will have a filename like “lancaster_20151127_1.pbn” and should be in your downloads folder, surprisingly (such as C:\Users\Richard\Downloads ) Double click the file and you will be playing as South. But you can change seating position to play where you want by going to Options, select “Seats” and pick where you want to be.

You can then compare your score for the hand with those played by others at the club by referring back to the club website.

Before you start, it’s worth spending some time setting up your preferred convention card settings in Robobridge, but be warned, it plays a strong 15-17 1NT and with a very limited look, I haven’t found a way of changing it to a weak 1NT. Let me know when you have!

Any problems, don’t blame me! There is a limited online Help.

Thursday Afternoon Bridge

In an attempt to boost Thursday afternoon table numbers, a new partnership scheme has been introduced. So please turn up with or without a partner - and also sign up for the partnership scheme. Details available, somewhat predictably, under the Patnership Scheme tab on the left.

Calling The Director

As in life, problems can arise at the bridge table. There are straightforward ones involving leads out of turn, bids out of turn and revokes which require a man or woman with a rule book and the knowledge of how to use it. There are also the more contentious issues over hesitations & claims.

Whatever the problem, the person who is there to resolve it is the director. However, there is best practice, and the watchword here is courtesy.

  • Discuss problems with your table mates. A suitable starting point might be “I think there might be a problem. Do you mind if I call the director?” It is vitally important that new players feel involved & not intimidated & excluded by this process.
  • The director should be called at an early stage before emotional temperatures start to rise. One person should call the director & be responsible for outlining the problem, though if there is a dispute about facts others will inevitably have to have their say.
  • Director please” is an appropriate and polite request for assistance.
Fancy a game of bridge? Can't find a partner?
There is a simple facility on the website to post your availability.

Click "Membership" in the column of options on the left hand side of this page.

Fill in your email address and password. Any problems on this page, please contact
Richard Willey

You will see a Booking page with dates. Tick the date(s) when you are looking for a partner in the column called "Partner Required". There are 2 tick boxes at the top of the page where you can say whether you want to be contacted by email, phone or either.

Anybody also looking for a partner can check on this same page and see who is available. Easy!

Social Bridge
Opening the upstairs room for social, non-competitive bridge on Tuesday afternoons has proved popular and has resulted in several new members joining the club. Some also now attend Monday evening and/or Tuesday afternoon duplicate sessions.
Following this success, the committee have extended the scheme to Thursday afternoons when there is no U3A bridge. A rota of those willing to help supervise is required - please contact Colin Mitchell if you are interested.
It is suitable for all standards of player, from absolute beginners to the more experienced. Ideally, bring a friend, but every effort will be made to find a partner for those without.
