English Bridge KCBA Column August 2016

In Sussex Norman Inniss (partner Richard Creamer, London) and Konrad Mau (partner Neerja Tanna, Middx) won the green pointed Swiss Teams. Barbara Schultz and David Cock (teammates Will Roper, Wiltshire and Niall Igoe, London) won the green pointed Swiss Teams in Hertfordshire.  Congratulations to them all.

THE Phillimore Cup (Swiss Pairs) was won by Ian Draper and Jeremy Willans.

The Brook Shield (Kent Area League play-off) was won by North West Kent; Norman Inniss, Stefan Syplywczak, Pat McBain and Colin Game.

Norman Selway was part of the winning England team in the Senior Camrose (Teltscher Trophy).  Helen Erichsen and her partner (Fiona Brown) were part of the England team who won Silver in the Lady Milne Trophy (Ladies Home International).

In Sussex Michael Prior and Mike Hampton won the green pointed Swiss Pairs, Sue Parkins and Mark Wiggins won the prize for the highest placed non-expert pair. In our own green pointed Swiss Teams Keith Ashcroft, John Hemington, Michael Prior and John Griffiths finished second.

In the SBU Overseas Dubrovnik Congress Bill Gardner and his partner (Mike Bell) won the Swiss Pairs, they were second in the Swiss Teams playing with (Gary Hyett and Dan Crofts).  Bill and Mike also won one Open Pairs and were second in another.  Congratulations to all.

THE Arnold Cup (County Teams of Four Knock-out Championship) was won by Gerald Soper, Terry Goldsmith, Colin Wilson, Diana Avis, Frances Connell and Steve Barnfield.

Kent League winners: North West Kent Div. 1 (Gill Cup): Team Inniss; North West Kent Div. 2: Team Walsh; South West Kent (Pearson Cup): Team Caplan; East Kent (Dover Cup): Team Crack; Mid Kent (Aveling Trophy): Team Crouch.

South Eastern Bridge League: Team Ashcroft; Rotter Cup: Team Conway.

Congratulations to the Kent team of Derek Patterson, Gerald Tredinnick, Mike Hampton, Norman Selway, Kay Preddy, Patrick Collins, Peter Law, Steve Auchterlonie and Gerald Soper who came second in the Tollemache Inter-Counties Final. The event was won by London.

John Gibbons and Konrad Mau won the Masters Pairs (out of 127 pairs playing in various venues across the country). In the other ranks, playing in Birmingham, Steve Auchterlonie came second in the Premier Grand Masters playing with Kath Nelson and Stuart McPhee came second in the Grand Masters playing with Alan Wilson.

Our Swiss Teams in March was won by Kent pair Peter Taylor and Keith Ashcroft.

Gerald Tredinnick, Derek Patterson, Kay Preddy and Norman Selway came second in the Easter Festival Swiss Teams, losing only to the winning team.

Congratulations to all our Kent competition winners Mike Hampton - Chris Wall winners of the Larsky Cup Kent’s Championship Pairs competition; runners-up Malcolm Lewis – Steve Auchterlonie.

Well done to Norman Selway and Pat Collins who were part of the team that won the Senior trials to represent England in the European Championships.

KCBA Club Teams of 8 League: Congratulations to Chislehurst BC ‘A’ team winners of the Corbett Cup (Division 1), Maidstone BC ‘A’ team winners of the Corbett Plate (Division 2) and
to Farnborough BC ‘D’ team winners of the Mitchell Salver (Division 3) and runners up Tunbridge Wells  BC ’C’ team. Both teams will be promoted to the Corbett Plate.

Playing for the Tollemache Cup, many congratulations to the Kent team of Jeremy Willans (Capt )/ Ian Draper; Derek Patterson/Gerald Tredinnick; Pat Collins/Peter Law; Norman Selway/Kay Preddy (Reserves - Colin Wilson/Gerald Soper) which won their group in the qualifier, winning all their matches.
In the Premier league 2nd Division, Derek Patterson and Gerald Tredinnick were in the winning team. Kay Preddy, Norman Selway, Ian Draper and Jeremy Willans were runners-up. Both teams being promoted.
In the Seniors Congress, Pat Collins (playing with Andrew Petrie) won the Pairs B Final
and was second in the Swiss Teams. Nicky Adamson & Frank Wright won the Swiss Pairs.
Malcolm Lewis & Doug Andrews won the Senior Pairs qualifier but only finished 7th in the A Final.

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful over the summer competition season.
Brighton Summer Congress: Monica Aitken, Angela Treen, Rodney Meredith and Chris Morgan were 2nd in the Bracketed Teams A Final. Brian Crack, Shirley Goldwin, Diana Avis and Colin Wilson won the Bracketed Teams B Final. Torquay Riviera Congress: In the Swiss Teams, Bill Gardner's team won all seven matches to take the title. In the Swiss Pairs, Michael Hampton and John Amor were undefeated in all 12 matches - winning 10 and drawing two - to take the title by an emphatic margin of 26 VPs.
July EBU Sim Pairs: The Monday event was won by Frank Wright and Mary Lee (Dover BC) and the Wednesday event by Nicky Adamson and Malcolm Lewis (Broadstairs BC).

Congratulations to all our winners: Hubert Phillips Plate (EBU Mixed Pivot Teams secondary competition) winners Leigh Chapman, Sarah Chapman, Michael Prior and Mike Hampton.
Christine Kempton and Phil Jones (equal first) in the Sussex Green Point Swiss Pairs.
Bill Gardner had successes in 2 congresses. SBU Overseas Corfu Congress: In the pairs, Bill and his partner (Mike Bell) won the Swiss Pairs (scoring 152 out of a maximum of 180), Pre Congress Pairs, Open Pairs, Men's Pairs and the Final Night Party Pairs. Bill and his team won the Open Teams (on a split tie). Yorkshire Congress: Bill and his partnerwon the secondary team’s event for the second year. He also was second in the main pairs event.
Pachabo Cup: The team of Gerald and Stuart Tredinnick, Norman Selway and Jeremy Willans were 3rd out of 26th with a score of 233 IMPs just 0.5 of an IMPbehind second place and 6 IMPs behind the winning team so it was very close.
Garden Cities final: Derek Patterson’s Chislehurst team, having won their regional final, came 3rd out of the 8 finalists.
Kent competition winners: Arnold Cup (County Teams of 4 Knockout Championship) was won by Kay Preddy, Norman Selway, Helen Erichsen and Espen Erichsen.
Kent League winners: North West Kent Div1 (Gill Cup) - Team Foster; North West Kent Div II - Team Powell; South West Kent (Pearson Cup) - Team Griffiths; East Kent (Dover Cup) - Team Crack; Mid Kent (Aveling Trophy) - Team Sissons (Maidstone B)

In the Corbett League (Kent Inter-club Teams of 8 competitions) 12 clubs from across the county played against each other over 2 weeks - 6 in the Cup and 6 in the Plate. The Corbett Cup was won by Chislehurst A. Runner up Farnborough A. The Corbett Plate was won by Swanley C. Runner up Chislehurst C.
The Mitchell Salver (3rd division) had 9 teams playing on one day only and was won by Canterbury. Runner up Hawkhurst.
Congratulations to  Jean Paxton and Maggie Piazza, winners of the Fleming Femina, the Kent Ladies' Pairs Championship and Gerald Soper and Colin Wilson winners of the Hunter Homines, the Kent Men's Pairs Championship.

Birkle Bowl (Leading Non-expert Team): Irene Thomas & Morag Gibson, Diane Potter & Robert Cave.
Well done to our Kent team who won their group in the Tollemache qualifier. Gerald Tredinnick (Capt)/Derek Patterson; Norman Selway/Kay Preddy; Malcolm Lewis/Steve Auchterlonie; Pat Collins/Peter Law; Michael Prior/ Leigh Chapman. There were 4 groupsin all with 9 counties in their group. They were 1st with 118VPs, 2nd Lancashire with 98 and 3rd Surrey with 89. The top two teams from each of the 4 groups go into the final which is played over the weekend of 14/15th February in Birmingham.
"The KCBA is delighted to announce that Brian Crack has been granted a Silver Award by the English Bridge Union in recognition of his services to the EBU, the KCBA and to clubs in Kent for over 30 years. This is a thoroughly deserved honour."

Kay Preddy and Norman Selway were the winners of the Dyer Smith Cup for the Kent Mixed Pairs Championship. The Hunter Cup for the highest placed married couple went to Gillian and Allan Foster.  Congratulations to all.

At the KCBA committee meeting held on 8th June 2014, Ian Ottley was unanimously awarded Honorary Vice President status for his services in bridge clubs in Kent, teachingand Countyand EBU directing.
Mike Hampton and Michael Prior won the Kent Swiss Pairs Championship and the Phillimore Cup

Congratulations to everyone who have been successful over the summer competition season.
Brighton Summer Congress: Brian Crack, Shirley Goldwin, Diana Avis and Colin Wilson won the BSM Bracketed Teams Final.The Sunday Open Pairs was won by Bill Gardner and Mike Bell who came 2nd in the Monday Open Pairs. Malcolm Schofield and Roy Thearle won the Wednesday Open Pairs.
Sharon Bayne and Paul Gibbon won the Mixed Pairs. Congratulations to Bill Hirst who, with Patrick Jourdain, successfully defended their
title in the Seniors Championship Pairs to win the Mercian Bridge Travel Trophy. Mercian Seniors Pairs Consolation Final was won by Malcolm Lewis and Tony Saunders. Carol and Mick Brocklehurst won two events in the Really Easy Congress.
Patrick Collins and Peter Law who were on the winning team in the Swiss Teams at the Summer Seniors Congress in Eastbourne.
The English Riviera Congress Swiss teams was won by Mike Hampton, John Amor, Michael Prior and Keith Ashcroft.
At the Essex and Herts Green pointed Pairs event winners of the Swiss Pairs were Bill Gardner, with partner Corneliu Rimboiu

The Maidstone Green pointed Swiss Teams was won by Derek Patterson, Jeremy Willans, Jonathan Chapman & Ian Draper.
The Brook Shield, the area leagues playoff trophy, was won by team Caplan – Irvine Caplan, Jean Smallwood, John Murrell and Gerald Soper.
Jeremy Willans & Ian Draper; Gerald & Stuart Tredinnick; Leigh Chapman & Michael Prior won the Arnold Cup, beating team Amor.. Gerald Soper, Terry Goldsmith, Diana Avis & Colin Wilson won the Arnold Plate. They beat team Rafferty in the final.
Yorkshire Congress Championship Pairs was won by Bill Gardner with Heather Dhondy. Bill’s team won the Scarborough Trophy.
At the Lambourne Jersey Congress: Tony Clark and Steve Burton won the Lambourne Jersey Swiss Teams; Jeremy Willans and Jill Skinner won the Swiss Pairs; Bill Gardner and George Pilcher won the Seniors’ Pairs, Pre-congress Pairs and Open Pairs, for the second year running. Brian Crack and Shirley Goldwin won the Lambourne Jersey Seniors Teams. Jersey Tourism Cup Mid Week Teams was won by Jeremy Willans, Jill Skinner, Ian Draper and Gwyneth Davies. Congratulations to all!

At the Maidstone Green Pointed Swiss Pairs in March the winners were Kay Preddy and Norman Selway. Second, Michael Prior and Mike Hampton
A heat of the Portland Pairs was held at Tunbridge Wells and this was won by Kay Preddy and Norman Selway
Mike Hampton and Bill Charlwood won the B Final at the National Pairs Finals.
At the Cornwall Congress Swiss Teams the winners were Shirley Goldwin and Brian Crack with Cornish pair Chris Bickerdike and Sandra Bickerdike.

In the Kent Inter-club Teams of 8 competitions, ten clubs from across the county played against each other over 2 days. The Corbett Cup (1st Division) was won by Chislehurst A. Runner up Farnborough A. The Corbett Plate (2nd Division) was won by Tunbridge Wells B. Runner up Beckenham A The Mitchell Salver was won by Chislehurst C. Runner up Bromley North.
Congratulations to  Barbara Noble and Margaret Crawley, winners of the Fleming Femina, the Kent Ladies' Pairs Championship and John Amor and Mike Hampton winners of the Hunter Homines, the Kent Men's Pairs Championship’
Congratulations to Patrick Collins, Peter Law, Jeremy Willans, Ian Draper,  Leigh Chapman, Michael Prior, Steve Auchterlonie, Malcolm Lewis, Colin Wilson, Gerald Soper who came 2nd in the Tollemache Cup.

Leigh Chapman and Mike Hampton finished second following their invitation to the Sussex Chairman’s Cup.
Congratulations to Cindy Cole who has been presented with the 2013 Alec Salisbury Award, for school teachers who have made a significant contribution to schools bridge.
The recent deaths were regretted of two very long-standing members of Kent, Dudley Reed (14* Premier Regional Master) and Stanley Adamson (Life Master, Chairman of Canterbury BC and former KCBA Committee Member).

Congratulations to Kay Preddy, Norman Selway, Patrick Collins and Derek Patterson (with Ben Green) winners of the 2012/13 Hubert Phillips Bowl for the National Seniors Knockout Teams Championship.
Christine Kempton and Phil Jones were the winners of the Dyer Smith Cup for the Kent Mixed Pairs Championship. The Hunter Cup for the highest placed married couple went to Sarah and Leigh Chapman.
Kent players did well in the SCBA Guildford Swiss event in September. 2nd in the Swiss Teams, Christine Kempton, Phil Jones, Keith Ashcroft, Michael Prior. 2nd Swiss Pairs, Michael Prior & Michael Hampton.
Congratulations also to Bill Gardner who, with Gary Hyett, won the Seniors Pairs at the Confiance Guernsey Bridge Congress.
Cyril Parker is now Honorary Vice President of the Kent Contract Bridge Association in recognition of his (extremely) long and dedicated service to bridge in Kent.
It is with great regret that we have to report the death of John Cullingworth.

Congratulations to Nick Irens, Espen Erichsen  who with David Bakhshi, Eric Berg and Zia Mahmood won the Brighton 4 star, the main teams event at the Brighton Congress, with a match to spare.
Brighton Lite Swiss Teams: Congratulations toDavid Parkinson, Marco Alcalay, Pat Alcalay, Barbara Schultz winners of the first Saturday Swiss teams. Brian Crack, Shirley Goldwin, Diana Avis, Colin Wilson winners of the first Sunday Swiss teams for the second year running.
The Brighton Seniors Pairs B Final, on the Wednesday was won by Malcolm Lewis partnering Peter Law first Sunday Swiss teams for the second year running.
In June and July Green-pointed One Day Events:  Leigh & Sarah Chapman, Michael Prior & Mike Hampton won the Sussex Swiss Teams.  In the Sussex Swiss Pairs Michael Prior & Mike Hampton came second.  Michael Prior & Keith Ashcroft were second in the Hertfordshire/Essex Swiss Pairs.
EBU Summer Seniors Congress: Patrick Collins and Peter Law won the Championship Pairs in the Seniors Congress in Eastbourne. They topped the qualifiers then went on to win The "A" Final.
The Brook Shield (Area League final) was won by Team Adamson from the South East Kent League.
Congratulations and welcome to our new Tournament Directors.  Headcorn: Carol Brocklehurst, Hugh Fido, Janet Batson, Jacky Day, Gill Flanagan, Sharon Bayne, Colin Crouch, Nick Allen, John Tyrrell, Worthing: Ryan Garrity, John Hardy, Richard Sissons, Lance Craner.
Steve Burton had been forced by ill health to resign from the Regional Clubs Committee. Bill Gardner had agreed to replace him.
It has been a long time since any Kent member had been put forward for a Dimmie Fleming Award. Dimmie was a Kent member, who gave great service to Kent and the EBU as well as playing for England. The award recognises long and meritorious service to a county. Chairman Geoff Smith is asking that suggestions.. (See website for Archive on Dimmie Fleming)

 

English Bridge KCBA Column August 2013

The Corwen Trophy (played by leading pairs from each County Association's main pairs championship) was won by Kent players Marten Wortel & Doug Andrews.  Many congratulations.
Congratulations to Diana Avis, Brian Crack, Shirley Goldwin and Colin Wilson winners the Oxford Mid-Week Congress Swiss Teams.
At the Maidstone Green Pointed Swiss Teams in May, the winners  were Tim Chanter & Helen Wildsmith, Mandie Campbell & Ben Hackenbrock.  Jackie Davies & Chris Smart, Graham Pollack & Paul Chapman came in second.
Jeremy Willans, Ian Draper, Stuart Tredinnick, Gerald Tredinnick  team won the Arnold Cup (Knockout County Teams of 4 Championship). The Gill Cup (Kent League North West Division 1) was won by Team Foster.    NW Kent Division 2 was won by Team Foreman. The Dover Cup (Kent League East) was won by Team Adamson. The Mid Kent League was won by the Maidstone Team. Congratulations to all.

Congratulations to Doug Andrews and Martin Wortel, winners of the Larsky Cup for the Kent Premier Pairs Championship. Runners up Sarah and Leigh Chapman. Congratulations to Martin Silverman & Brenda Tolhurst winners of the George Griffiths Cup for the Kent Seniors Pairs Championship.
There were several winning performances from Kent players in the EBU Stratified Simultaneous Pairs in March on the Wednesday, Jeremy Willans and Jill Skinner came top with 75.25. Valerie Reeves and Peter Quinton won the Monday (8th April) heat of the British Spring Simultaneous Pairs playing at Weald of Kent with 70.51%.
Outside of the County success came for Kent players at the Cumbria Congress with Michael Prior and Keith Ashcroft along with Catherine Draper and Andrew Woodcock of Lancashire winning the Swiss Teams Whitehaven Trophy.             
The KCBA committee is looking for someone to take up the post of Kent Representative on the Regional Club Committee. The Corbett Cup (1st division) was won by Chislehurst A, Corbett Plate (2nd division) by Farnborough B and Mitchell Salver (3rd division) by Beckenham B. Congratulations to all.

The Mitchell Salveris played on the second day. Qualifying rounds are played at variousclubs.

Kent teams took two of the top three places in the SCBA Guildford Swiss Teams on 30th September. In a field of 76 teams, the winners were John Amor, Michael Hampton, Bill Charlwood, and Jack Goody (SRY.) 3rd: Brian Crack, Shirley Goldwin, Diana Avis and Colin Wilson.
In the Metropolitan Cup, part of the National Inter-County Leagues competition, played for at Ardingly in September, the ‘C ’flight team of  David Anning (Captain), Kim Staples, Lyn and Graham Foreman, Barbara Schultz, David Powell, Jill Skinner, Gwyneth Davis, Colin Game, Ossie Saeed, Dorothy Holland and Pat McBain won their division out of 10 teams.
Congratulations to Sarah and Leigh Chapman, winners of the Dyer Smith Cup for the Kent Mixed Pairs Championship. They were deserved winners, having won both sessions. The Hunter Cup for the highest placed married couple was won by Karen and Malcolm Pryor.
Well done to Jane Mitchell and Sheila Boakes who, playing in the Welsh Autumn Simultaneous Pairs at Broadstairs Bridge Club, won the Wednesday heat with 73.35%.
A belated congratulations to Michael Prior and Keith Ashcroft who playing with Catherine Draper and Andrew Woodcock (Lancs) won the Multiple Teams at the Northern Summer Congress at Scarborough for a second year in a row.

At the Jersey Congress Diana Avis and Colin Wilson were in the winning team for the Swiss Teams winning the Jersey Tourism Trophy.
Norman Selway and Kay Preddy won the Larsky Cup (Kent's Premier Pairs Competition). Due to the unfortunate cancellation of the first weekend of the Corbett Cup competitions due to snow and the lack of suitable alternatives,the KCBA Committee decided that this Inter Club teams of 8 Competition would be staged over one day. Full details in the next report.

English Bridge KCBA Column February 2012

At the Kent Congress, congratulations to Gavin Mackay and Croz Croswell winners of the Swiss Pairs; non-expert winners David Ellerby and Mark Rixon were second overall. The Green-pointed Swiss Teams was won by Steve Burton and Mike Fletcher, Tony Clarke and Andrew Thompson. Non-expert winners were Oliver Kinsey and David Jones, Bob Fordham and Gill Cordell.
We are grateful to Monica Aitken and her team for making the Kent Congress a superb success. Equally we would like thank June Booty-Taplin and her team for running the Congress so smoothly.
Peter Crouch and Derek Patterson were in the team that won the 2011 Premier League.
Congratulations to Norman Selway who was in the winning team for the prestigious 2011 Lederer Memorial Trophy.

The Mixed Pairs Championship was played at the beginning of October. There was a much larger field this year, an excellent atmosphere and it was very ably directed by Geoff Smith with John Oakland scoring.   Angela Thomson and Chas Snape won the Dyer-Smith Cup. The Hunter Cup (highest place married couple) went to Lyn and Graham Foreman.

The winners of the Brook Shield for 2010-11 are Nicky Adamson, Stan Adamson,Dave McVey and Steve Auchterlonie. Mark Benson was a member of the team that won the Dover Cup but did not play in the final. They beat the winners of the North-West League, captained by Norman Inniss, in the play-off.

At the AGM in July, Geoff Smith took over as Kent Chairman with DavidAnning replacing him as Treasurer. Mike Rafferty has joined the committee. Congratulations to the Corbett Cup winner, Chislehurst Bridge Club, which went onto win the Southern Heat Regional Final of the Garden Cities competition. In the National Final, they came 2nd narrowly beaten by 3 VPs pipped at the last match by London YCBC . The team was Derek Patterson (Captain), Patrick Collins, Ian Draper, Mike Hampton, Michael Prior, Keith Ashcroft, Bill Charlwood and Jon Chapman. John Hemington replaced Jon Chapman in the final.

The EBU Stratified Simultaneous Pairs were held in March and Kent had creditable successes. National winners were Steve Auchterlonie and Malcolm Lewis. Pieter Weel & Ian Cotton won the C "strat" and Fran Baillie and Ken Hancock won the D "strat", both on the Monday. Maureen Tatham & Mick Wilkinson won the B "strat" on Wednesday. Nick Hawkins & Brian Waters won the B "strat" on Thursday.
In the EBU 2011 Ranked Masters Pairs competition, congratulations to the winners of the National Masters, Norman Inniss and Stefan Syplywczak. Ian Draper and Jeremy Willans were third in the Premier Grand Masters.
Kent Seniors Pairs Championship winners, playing for the George Griffiths Cup, were Alison Burt and Anne McGregor.

 The County Inter-Club Competitions were played as a three division league competition, over two days,in February. The Corbett Cup was won by Chislehurst A        with Tunbridge Wells A runners up. The Corbett Plate was won by Folkestone      with runners up Gravesend. The Mitchell Salver was won by Hawkhurst with Maidstone B runners up. Congratulations to all the winners. In the Fleming Femina, congratulations to Liz Blande and Christine Kempton on retaining the Kent Ladies Pairs Championship for the second year running. Congratulations to Colin Wilson and Gerald Soper winners of the Hunter Homines, the Kent Men's Pairs Championship.  The Kent team finished 5th in the Tollemache Final.  The Larsky Cup (Premier Kent Pairs Championship) qualifying rounds were completed in February.  Those qualifying will be notified and the final takes place in April.  The Congress Swiss Teams last October was overbooked by about 15 teams. Some of those disappointed came to the Swiss Pairs instead, for which there were 28 tables. Players attending both days could be given priority for the Teams in future. It is possible that another venue might be used next year so that teams need not be turned away.

The Kent Congress in October is now established as a Green-pointed event for the Swiss Teams which are held on the second day. This was won by Norman Selway, Espen Erichsen, Nick Irens and David Bakshi. 2nd Jeremy Willans and Gerald Treddinick, Stuart Treddinick and Ian Draper. 3rd Rosemarie Thompson and Roger Roger Hitt, Christine Dyer and Derek Eneas. On the first day, the Swiss Pairs winners were Andrew Cairns &Nick Boss. 2nd Malcolm Lewis & Steve Auchterlonie. 3rd Peter Taylor & Mike Hampton.
Gerald Tredinnick (Captain) & Stuart Tredinnick, Derek Patterson & Phil Bailey, Jeremy Willans & Ian Draper' Pat Collins & Peter Law, won their group in the Tollemache Cup (county teams of 8) qualifier .The final takes place on 12th/13thFebruary.
Congratulations to Steve Auchterlonie and Malcolm Lewis for winning the Chairman`s Cup held in Brighton on Saturday 13th November. This is the Sussex annual invitation event for Sussex pairs (plus one Kent & Surrey pair ) who have won a major county event in the past year.

Winner of the North West Kent League Division 2 wasTeam Walsh - Suzanne Walsh, Steve Ripley, Dennis Ingham, Clare Ingham.  Arnold Cup: Kent’s premier knock-out teams event was never completed due to the unfortunate deaths of Denis O’Donovan and Marie Horlock.  The Arnold Plate was won by team Forman - Graham Foreman,Lyn Foreman, John Griffiths, Graham Pollack .  Well done also to Chris Burton who obtained distinction in the final part of his Club Directors course.

Kent has had a great competition season. Malcolm Lewis and Patrick Collins were in the England team that won the Seniors Camrose. The Gerard Faulkner Salver (National Seniors Knockout Competition) was won by the team captained by Peter Law and included Patrick Collins and John Short. The team played in memory of their late captain Dennis O'Donovan. The Pachabo Cup has been won by our Kent Champions, Jeremy Willans, Ian Draper,Stuart Tredinnick and Gerald Tredinnick. Congratulations to Norman Inniss,Stefan Syplywczak Keith Ashcroft and Phil Jones winners of the Canterbury Green-pointed Swiss Teams One Day Event. The Jersey Congress Swiss Teams was won by Jill Skinner (captain), Gwyneth Davies, Ian Draper and Jeremy Willans. The Mid week Pairs Championship was won by Colin Wilson and Diana Avis. Many congratulations to everyone.

At the AGM in June, Geoff Smith retired as Treasurer and became Vice Chairman. David Anning is our new Treasurer. Malcolm Lewis retired by rotation and has been re-elected Secretary. John Cullingworth has resigned and Diane Rogers has joined the committee.

At the London Easter Congress, Rhys Horlock (playing with Alex Mitchell) won the Under 19  Pairs. Jeremy Willans and Jill Skinner were 2nd in the Mixed Pairs. Many congratulations.  The following team has been selected to represent England in the Seniors Camrose, Denis O'Donovan & John Short;  Patrick Collins & Malcolm Lewis; Gunnar Hallberg & John Holland.Writing in the Times, Andrew Robson recently named Kent’s Derek Patterson and Peter Crouch as the best English pair in the past 12 months. A deserved accolade!  Congratulations to the winners of 2010 Kent competitions: The Premier Kent Pairs Championship, played for the Larsky Cup, was won by Terry Goldsmith and Gerald Soper. Tony Price and Steve Burton came 2nd . In the Kentinter-club teams competition final: The premier division, playing for the Corbett Cup, was won by Chislehurst “A”. The second division, playing for the Corbett Plate, was won by Beckenham. The Mixed Pairs Championship was played at the beginning of October. 1stHarry & Mary Tuff winning the Dyer Cup. The Hunter Cup (highest place married couple) went to Mark & Barbara Howarth.

Jean Paxton and Diana Avis were in a women's team that qualified for the semi-finals of the National Women's teams Whitelaw Cup before losing to a team of Scottish Internationals.

The pairs selected to represent Kent in the Sussex Invitation Pairs for the Chairman's Cup on Sunday 11th November will be: Denis O`Donovan & Peter Law; Brian Crack & Dean Mortlock.

John Cullingworth has been elected Deputy Kent Chairman after Bob Manser’s retirement. Mike de Winter has been appointed Chief Tournament Director following the resignation of Rachael King. Malcolm Lewis was elected on to the committee and Jim Wortley has agreed to take on the role of Area Secretary for South West Kent. A tournament sub-committee has been appointed :Stephen Pierce, Keith Ashcroft, Mike deWinter, Jeremy Willans and Monica AitkenA Bridge Student Championship (Ray White Trophy) will be played at the October Congress. Kent will also be staging a heat of the simultaneous National Newcomers Pairs in March. Philip Morgan will captain the Home Counties League with Kate Morgan organising. Brian Crack and Dean Mortlock have been selected to represent Kent in the Surrey Invitation Pairs in September.

Congratulations to the winners of national competitions: Karen Pryor and John Griffiths won the National Ranked Masters Pairs ; Christine Kempton and Marian Hunt came 2nd in the National Women's Pairs; Barbara Schultz and Mirna Goacher won the Swiss Pairs B Flight at the London Easter Festival.
Dean Mortlock and Brian Crack came 1st nationally in a heat of the BBLSpring Simultaneous Pairs. At the Eastbourne Seniors, winners of the Swiss Teams were Brian Crack & Bob Jones, Diana Avis & Colin Wilson. English Riviera Congress.
Malcolm Pryor and his partner came 1st in the Swiss Pairs. Brighton Congress. First weekend Swiss Pairs: 2ndPeter Crouch and partner Seniors Teams: Marco Alcalay was in the team that came 2nd.

Congratulations to John Cullingworth, Patrick Collins, Peter Law and John Short for coming 2nd in the Pachabo Cup.   There was a good Kent contingent at the Jersey Congress. Congratulations to Diana Avis and Colin Wilson for winning the Swiss Pairs by a big margin.  The Metropolitan Cup (Inter Home Counties Teams event) was another enjoyable event with congratulations going to the Kent B team Brian Crack (captain)/Dean Mortlock/Richard Sissons/David Stretton/Nicky & Stan Adamson/Malcolm Lewis/Dave McVey/Diane Rogers/Mike Kingsland/Tony Price/Robin George who won their division. The A team were 6th and the C team 5th.  The Mitchell Salver was run as a one-day multi team’s competition for the first time this year. It attracted 4 teams and congratulations to Farnborough who won the day.  The KCBA tried something new for its 2nd one day green pointed event which took the form of an imped scored Swiss Pairs. (Butler scoring). Congratulations to the winners:  1st David Cooper, John C Williams.  2nd Sue Morgan, Terry Goldsmith  The Arnold Cup (county teams of 4 competition): team Cullingworth.The Corbett Cup (principal knockout Teams of 8 competition for clubs): Farnborough A  Congratulations to all the winners of the Kent Area Leagues.  East Kent (Dover/Thanet Cup): team McVey. North West Kent Division 1 (Gill Cup): team Gibbons. North West Kent Division 2: team Inniss.  South West Kent (Pearson Cup): team Rolles. Mid Kent (Aveling Cup): team Beale.  The Brook Shield (play off between the Kent League winners) was won by Mid -Kent.   Brian Evans, our newly appointed Kent County Youth Bridge Officer, is keen to actively promote bridge to the youngsters of the county but needs help!! PLEASE, PLEASE email him with any information on young bridge players, schools, colleges, kitchen table etc so he can give them details of opportunities,

Dean Mortlock and Brian Crack came 1st nationally in a heat of the BBL Spring Simultaneous Pairs.  The pioneering Kent Green Point Bracketed Teams Competition was successfully held in Canterbury in March, under the care of Chief Tournament Director Rachael King.  The consensus of opinion is that the format worked very well.  Bracket A was won by Denis O'Donovan, Dave McVey, Clive Cubitt, Peter Law Bracket B was won by Nick Barlow, Malcolm Pryor, Karen Pryor, Norman Inniss Bracket C Malcolm Judge, Linda Radford, Margery Rumbelow, Bob Shilling  Bracket D Philip Morgan, Kate Morgan, Val Mollinson, Elaine Green Bracket E Graham Ford, James Henderson, Richard Bird, Ian Galletti Bracket F Cyril Parker, Chris Brian, Sophie Scott, Janet Batson Other Kent County Results are as follows:George Griffiths Cup (Senior Pairs) Colin Mahrer Tony Baber.  Hunter Homines (Men’s Pairs) Brian Crack & Dean Mortlock.  Fleming Femina (Ladies Pairs) Brenda Tolhurst Janet Rumsey.  Larsky Cup (Kent Pairs Championship) Brian Crack & Dean Mortlock.  These competitions, played at Tunbridge Wells, are becoming more popular. Now, besides good bridge, a quality lunch is also served and much enjoyed by all.   Committee news: Brian Evans has been appointed  County Bridge Officer. John Cullingworth was appointed Area Secretary for Mid-Kent. Malcolm Lewis has been co-opted onto the committee. The post of Area Secretary for SW Kent is still vacant and the committee would be pleased to hear from anyone who feels they would like to do this.

Many congratulations to Catherine Draper, Ian Draper, Gerald Tredinnick and Stuart Treddinick who triumphed once again for Kent by bringing home the Pachabo Cup for the second year running.  In May, Kent’s Peter Crouch and Neil Rosen were in the team winning the Schapiro Spring Fours.The Jersey Congress in April made very pleasant break with many Kent pairs enjoying a holiday as well as good bridge. Championship Pairs: 2nd Ian Draper and Catherine Draper 2nd Swiss Teams: Catherine Draper, Ian Draper, Diana Avis, Colin Wilson 2nd Seniors Teams: included Kaia Bell and Margaret Heilbron. In May the Maidstone team of David Stretton Richard Sissons, John Cullingworth, Denis O'Donovan Geoff Smith, Daran Steele, David Beal, John Murrell, representing Kent, qualified for the Garden Cities Trophy Final in July. They came in 5th at the final.  Tunbridge Wells Bridge Club hosted the Kent Joint Green Point Swiss Teams in May. Kent players Ken Foord and Denis O’Donovan were in the team to come 2nd being very narrowly defeated, even though they won the last match with 20VP’s!The following day there was another Joint Green Point Swiss Teams at Ardingly.  The team of Keith Ashcroft, Phil Jones, Malcolm Pryor, Karen Pryor came 2nd.June 17th was another Kent Joint Green Point  Swiss Teams Event at the Tunbridge Wells Club. Kent teams came in 2nd and 3rd place 2nd place:  Brian Crack, Patricia Crack Karen Pryor, Malcolm Pryor Equal 3rd place:Jeremy Willans, Catherine Draper Michael Prior, Leigh Chapman Marian Hunt, Brad Featherman, Phil Jones, Christine Kempton  Canterbury BC took part in the Worldwide Simultaneous Pairs in April. Two pairs made it into top 20: Dave McVey and Steve Auchterlonie were 3rd overall and Malcolm Lewis & Brian Crack were 17th. Congratulations to Bill Gardner who has been promoted to Grand Master. English Bridge KCBA Column April 2006

 Kent members have been mentioned at all levels in National competitions.  A team from Sundridge Park Golf Club in Bromley, including Mike Bertini and Ken McClements, qualified for the GolfPrint Final in Kettering in February sadly being unplaced in the finals. Kent pair Elaine Wilmot and John Condon went to the Elgin 2006 Congress and came home with 2nd  in Open Pairs.

In March the National Pairs South East Regional Final was held in Leatherhead with Karen Pryor and Malcolm Pryor coming 2nd and Clemency Schofield and Malcolm Lewis also qualifying, in 10th place. The final is at the end of April.

Mary Lawrenson and David Park were the winners at the Tunbridge Wells Bridge Club heat of the Portland Pairs.  They came 6th in the overall national result.

In the BGB Spring Simultaneous Pairs two Kent pairs distinguished themselves by coming in the top 10 nationally – Leslie Bain and Keith Godfrey (Medway Towns) came eighth and Barbara Howarth and Phil Bailey (Farnborough) came in tenth. Many congratulations also to Marie Horlock who has become Grand Master
