Ipswich & Kesgrave use the course created by the English Bridge Union. It is formed of six ten-week terms over two years. It sounds like a long haul but the emphasis is on play and, after learning the mechanics, students are very soon playing cards. Later lessons are often entirely play sessions with set deals.
In 2012-13 we plan for Year-1 to start on Thursday 11th October and run for ten Thursday evenings, ending on 13th December. Thursday night is our regular club night and tuition takes place in one of the side rooms at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre with the main club playing in the large hall.
Year-2 runs on Tuesdays and will start on 25th September. This course is also held at the Kesgrave Community Centre.
Classes typically have two hours of teaching; 7:30pm-8:30pm, a half-hour mid-session break for tea/coffee, then finish around 10:00pm. In practice the room is open from before 7:00 (when the main club starts) and students play among themselves until the 'lecture' starts on the half-hour.
In past years we have re-started mid-January and, with a break for Easter on Maundy Thursday, run terms two and three together to avoid absences as students take holidays in June/July.
Course fees at Ipswich & Kesgrave are £50 per term (10 lessons). Course material, the EBU book, is £20 and club membership is £5, these two components being payable at the start of each year. The bottom line is that £75 is due for Term-1, £50 for Terms-2 & -3. To compare, club players pay £2.50 table money each evening and the same £5 annual club membership.
