The On-Line club will meet each Monday at 19:30 until face-to-face bridge reappears. Click on this box for information on how to enter. Table money of 3$ is collected via your BBO account.

To ensure a prompt start, please register your intention to play on BBO by 19:00, and ensure your $BBO account has sufficient funds!!

Cath Fox has had an excellent article on bridge during Covid-19, naturally focusing on the blossoming of the on-line game, published on 26th July 2020 in the Sunday Express magazine: Read it here! Some bloke called Tony French gets a mention.

Lynn Rayment

It is with great sadness we have to give you the news that John's wife, Lynn Rayment, lost her long fight with illness on Sunday 6th September.

Without her support John would have been unable to commit to so much work with our committee most notably with teaching and our Play and Learn Club. Lynn will be known to many of you from time spent at Hutton Community Centre while John was with us, or from club functions or our club holiday. She passed away comfortably and peacefully, her struggle is now over and she is at peace. She will be missed but our hearts go out to John and we offer him our sincere condolences.

Update: Lynn's final journey will begin from her home at 2.00pm followed by a service at South Essex Crematorium at 2.40pm on Wednesday 23rd September. Due to Covid numbers are very restricted and a welcome to all is sadly not possible, however anybody who wishes to see the party leave or attend the service outside will be most welcome and there is a weblink to the service itself. There is a tea room and ample parking at the Crematorium. Donations would be prefered rather than flowers with the current situation in mind and also in recognition of the comfort and advice recieved from Saint Francis Hospice. This can be achieved via https://lynnrayment.muchloved.com, or via John who can also provide the weblink for the service.

Alan Gardner

With great sadness, we are sorry to bring you the news of the passing of Alan Gardner. He died on March 31st 2020, from natural causes that were unrelated to Coronavirus.

Alan, who was a regular player on Wednesdays with his partner David Watt, brought a smile to everyone and he will be greatly missed by all at the club.

Our thoughts at this time particularly go out to his widow, Sandra.

Bridge Lessons - spread the word

Our current beginner’s class is coming to an end, hopefully many of you will have noticed several of the ‘Class of ‘18’ making an impact on Wednesday evenings with some promising results I may add! Shortly we plan to run the second year course for some of these students who will be joined by a couple of newcomers. We'll also begin a new course of beginner's lessons for this year’s intake; ‘Class of ‘19’ – we can see a friendly rivalry in the future.

Both of these classes, ‘Beginning Bridge’ and ‘Continuing Bridge’, will start in early April and run at Hutton Community Centre on Monday mornings. Please help us spread the word by advertising the courses and/or passing the details on to anyone who may have an interest. Please contact John or Tony.

Our Play and Learn Club on Monday afternoons ably managed by Angela will continue throughout. This session has up to 18 boards with hand records but discrete questions may be asked of the session leaders, inexperienced players may refer to notes and although etiquette will be observed it will be fully explained. The club is ideal for any player undertaking lessons, any with limited experience, those just returning to the game or anyone looking to test new systems or partnerships. This is a highly social and friendly session looking to gently introduce players to our club and the scene at large, any player/s at any standard looking for a game on Monday afternoons are most welcome. The session is scored manually and uploaded to this website but not EBU graded, existing members of any standard are encouraged to come along, experienced players are most welcome to offer their assistance. Why not support the club's efforts by visiting sometime?

The club is also looking into the posibility of hosting a school/youth bridge club, Linda, Tony and John are attending a seminar in the spring. If this takes off the club will need volunteer mentors, please contact one of the committee on a club night for more information.

We would also like to remind members that those of you who play regularly during our Friendly First Wednesday sessions will be able to obtain free ad-hoc customised lessons or mentoring sessions from either one of our teachers or some of our more experienced players. Please ask if interested in improving your game.

Club Teams

The Club fields teams at all levels in all of the Essex County Competitions, currently our Club Captain is working on our selection for the upcoming Cornell Trophy in Feb.

We ask that regardless of level you let us know if you would be willing to represent the club. Entry fees for representative events are met by us, the events can be very rewarding and there is a good spirit within the club but we need to know if you are willing to be a part of Team Hutton either this time around or in forthcoming events.

Please make your willingness known by email to Dennis or place your name on the list on the club noticeboard.

Xmas Party
Xmas Party

Our Xmas party night was on Monday 17th December, our usual festive funster and Club Captain Dennis hosted the evening and presented 2018'’s competition winners with their trophies, comgratulations to all the winners!

41 members and 3 guests enjoyed stuffing our faces, drinking wine and having a throughly fun and festive evening.

The answer to the Xmas quiz question set by Dennis is here.

The club re-opens on Wednesday 2nd January, we wish all members, friends, guests and visitors a happy and healthy 2019!

That was funny!

There were chuckles a plenty on Thursday 29th November when a group of 25 members and guests enjoyed a visit to the The Comedy Club in Brentwood, and not all the laughs were on stage!

We discovered looking like an 'Essex Geezer' has it's advantages, especially on the night bus............... who knew?

Watch this space for the next club social.

81% for goodness sake!

In any field, regardless of size or strength a score of over 70% is always considered exceptional. Dorothy and Alaric Cundy scored 81.58% on Wednesday 26th October, a fabulous achievement richly deserved by two of our most valued members. Very well done indeed!

Worth noting that according to our site the SOF was 49.55%, in fact not so weak either...... drinks on the Cundys at the weekend!

Fledgling Fury!

Many congratulations to '3 Hot - 1 Not' comprising of Sheila Edwards & Anne Blake with Rose & Roy Matton on their convincing victory in the most recent Fledgling Fours team event.

'The Mighty Whites' - our very own Jil Ibrahim Sue Camp with John Tumbridge & Tom Dewhurst were very worthy runners-up indeed having won every match including the one against the eventual competition winners.

This time around saw a particualrly hard fought event with nine teams fighting it out amid some giggling and laughter, proving bridge can be fun & competitive at the same time! Our Class of 18' team also gave a highly respectable performance and gained experience of team bridge at an early stage, they'll be formidable friendly foes very soon!

Well done to everyone who took part and thank you for a magnificant evening's entertainment.

Club Pairs

Last year's winners of the Club Pairs Jon & Coral put up a strong defence in an attempt to hold on to their title in this year's event on 10th June, unfortunately they lost out narrowly and had to settle for a splendid runners-up spot. Linda & Dave B also put in a good effort and managed a creditable 8th place but sadly that was not quite enough for us to retain our team trophy.

Tara & Jagdish also gained some valuble experience and managed to finish above a couple of much more experienced pairs, so all in all it could be considered a good day!

A very well done to all our players and thank you for representing Team Hutton.

Temporary Venue change

Please note that as our normal venue will be unavailable on Wednesday 26th September and Wednesday 3rd October those sessions will take place at our trainning venue:

Hutton Community Centre
Harrison Close
Brentwood
Essex CM13 1LP

The sessions will take place at the normal time and there is ample parking on-site.

Membership Fees

Would members kindly note that the annual subscription of £15 was due by 31st August, this may be paid by cash, cheque or BACS (see committee for a/c details).

Members are reminded that membership covers all scheduled nights and any special events, the subscription and table money rates for the forthcoming year are unchanged.

A great weekend for team Hutton!

Congratulations to Tara/Jagdish and Sue C/Jill on their 2nd place in the Fledgling Fours team competition held in Cranham on Friday 16th Feb! They were beaten by a much more experienced team but were in contention right until the last round, Bettie/Andrew and Ann D/(Roy Udall) followed them home with a fine 3rd place.

In the prestigious Ray Cornell Trophy on Sunday the 18th our teams finished in 2nd and 7th places repectively and therefore 2nd overall in the race to represent Essex in the Garden Cities national competition. This is an execellent performance from Dennis/Basil, Graham/David P, David C/Albert and Colin/David T in a very strong field indeed, very well done guys! A particularly impressive set of x-imps from David C & Albert is worthy of a special mention.

Both the experienced and up and coming players of the club are proving we're heading in the right direction!

Thank you to all our players for supporting the club and agreeing to represent us.

A big toothy grin!

Sheila gave club members the 'thumb's up' and a hugely encouraging toothy grin when they visited her in hospital at the weekend. She said her spirits were raised by the visit during which cake, cards and the best wishes of many members were delivered. We hope this adds to her determination to complete all the physio she's been told may get her back to being as mobile and independent as she was prior to her fall. That's certainly what we're all hoping for and she did seem in a determined mood and as spirited as ever. Get well very soon Sheila!

Xmas Party & Happy New Year!

The not to be missed event of the season, the club's XMAS PARTY, took place on Monday 18th December when 36 members and 2 guests enjoyed an evening of festive revelry and over indulgence. The evening was presided over by our club captain who presented the club's trophies (well done to all our winners!) and organised the fun and games, it was also noted that there were some especially good Xmas outfits on show!

For those curious the answer to Dennis' Xmas puzzle may be found here.

All that remains is to wish one and all a very Happy New Year, we start back in 2018 with a Friendly First Wednesday session on 3rd Janurary and then the EBU Winter Sims on Monday 8th Janurary.

2017 AGM

This years AGM was well attended by 30 members and 2 guests and took place on Monday 30th October immediately prior to the normal bridge session. We enjoyed a very cordial and progressive meeting following a another successfull year for the club.

The minutes are available here.

Hutton retain Club Pairs!!!

On Sunday 4th June Coral Fallon and Jon Ward won the Club Pairs with the 3rd place slot going to Theo Todman and Colin Scott scoring 63.74% & 61.25% respectively.

This placed Hutton comfortably top of the clubs to become the winning club for the 2nd year running, we have also provided the winning individual pair for 4 of the last 5 years!

Well done to all our pairs taking part and especially those mentioned above, click here to see your club at the top.

Please let a member of the committee or support team know if you would be willing to represent the club in inter-club or county events, we enter teams and pairs at all levels.

Annual Subscriptions

Would members kindly note that the annual subscription of £15 is due by 31st August, this may be paid by cash, cheque or BACS (see committee for a/c details).

Members are reminded that membership covers all scheduled nights and any special events, table money for the forthcoming year remains as previously shown on the information pages of this site.

Software updates & result delays

Would members please note that the recent club and EBU software updates are now completed, all the club's results are processed.

What's in a name?

Famously Juliet tells Romeo that a name is an artificial and meaningless convention and sometimes when bridge competitions or trophies are named this can, I suppose, be true.

However when choosing a name for our new 'Combined Individual Ladder' Hutton Bridge Club and the former St. Edith's Lane Bridge Club wanted a name with real meaning. This is after all potentially our most prestigious competition; to win it you need not only to be the best but also committed to the club as in order to qualify you must have played in 15 Monday sessions, 10 Wednesday normal sessions and at least once in a Friendly First Wednesday session.

If only we had a member regularly playing across all these sessions, one who had previously won Essex competitions competing for Hutton, perhaps someone won had in fact won Hutton’s Individual Ladder 4 times and it’s Pairs Ladder no less than 7 times! If such a person had also won Hutton’s Pair’s Championship a couple of times that would be something wouldn't it? But what if this person had also won St. Edith’s Individual Ladder at least once, St. Edith’s Pairs Ladder at least 3 times and not only run and supported Hutton for many years but also helped bring it and St. Edith’s together! Wouldn’t naming this trophy in thanks and as a mark of respect for such a person be ideal?

With all this in mind we are delighted to confirm the winner of the new Combined Individual Ladder will hold the Eric Field Trophy.

So what's in a name? Well in this case quite a lot actually, thank you Eric.

St. Edith's EGM

Would members kindly note there will be an EGM of St. Edith's Lane Bridge Club prior to the bridge session on Wednesday 8th March. The meeting will commence at 7pm and bridge will follow as normal.

Ray Cornell Trophy

The club entered  two teams into the Ray Cornell Trophy which took place on Sunday 12th February. A very creditable performance by Dennis, David, Theo, Colin, Dave B, Sandra, Stephanie and John T saw our A team finish 7th and our B team 13th in a strong field of 23 (results here).

Well done team!

The King is dead, long live the King!

It is with some sadness that we report the closing of a local bridge club; St. Edith’s Lane. However as one door closes another opens and therefore we are pleased to announce that from the New Year Hutton will be open on every Wednesday evening!

30 years of history at St. Edith’s will not be lost as a new ladder competition will be named in their honour and we will sincerely welcome members of the former club as Hutton members for no annual fee in the current year. The first Wednesday of each month will remain as a ‘Friendly First Wednesday’ session but all sessions will of course be open to all bridge players, members or otherwise.

The ethos of the former club is very much in keeping with our own friendly and welcoming ideals so together we look forward to a new beginning!

Merry Xmas!!

The event noboby wanted to miss - our Xmas Party - took place on 19th December.

It was attended by 28 members and 2 guests who all stuffed themselves with Xmas treats and wine whilst playing an entertainment-focused game of bridge. Celebrity guest James Bond won the bingo while spot prizes circulated the room as fast as Rudolph on Christmas Eve! Along with the fun and games our club captain, looking surprisingly dignified despite a flashing tie, presented our competition winners with their trophies (June can be seen in one of the images below collecting hers while Julian clearly sneaks a look at her hand and realises she has A-Q over his K-J!).

Our Head Elf disgraced himself by twice inccuring the wrath of Madamn Director (also shown below collecting her trophy)! But he recovered his composure in time to venture along to the last night of St. Edith's Lane Bridge Club in the spirit of harmony, peace and goodwill to all men to formally offer those players membership at Hutton and invite them to our new Wednesday sessions in the new year. Some of our members can also be spotted in the last photo taken on the night at St. Edith's - if you have a magnifing glass to hand.

All that remains is for the club to warmly wish all of it's members and guests throughout the past year the compliments of the season, may you have good health, weath and happiness next year. We hope to see all of you at the club again very soon along with our new St. Edith's members!

Competition Results for 2016!

Many congratulations to Pam Kite and Liz Williams who finished top of the pile in the 2016 Club Championship on Monday 24th October, however David Clark and Dennis Valtisiaris retain their title as the top placed pair of club members.

More congratulations to the winners of our ladder competitions as follows:-

  • Individual (Gentleman): Dennis Valtisiaris
  • Individual (Lady): Lorraine Butler
  • Pairs: David Clark and Dennis Valtisiaris
  • Improvers: June Everett
  • Handicap: June Everett
Friendly First!

We are pleased to invite you to our new monthly sessions held on the first Wednesday of every month at the club’s venue. The session will be known as ‘Friendly First Wednesdays’ and is aimed at new/er or returning players, improvers, new partnerships, players who may be a little rusty or anyone looking for a friendly game. The session will be open to all although experienced players will be expected to be especially tolerant and welcoming on these Wednesdays.

All these sessions will have hand records with occasional experienced member feedback.

2016 AGM

This years spooky AGM was well attended by 32 members and took place on Monday 31st October immediately prior to the normal bridge session. We enjoyed a very positive meeting along with Halloween themed cupcakes & biscuits. The minutes are available here.

EBU Master Points List 2015

The EBU Master Points Lists for 2015 are now out. Follow this link.

Congratulations!

Many Congratulations to Brenda & Frans Vas Nunes for winning the Essex B-Flight Pairs at Barleylands on Sunday 10th April. They showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels and flew the Hutton flag with an excellent 63.02%. See the ECBA website for more detauils.

Friendly League Defeat

This season's league started with a 5-15* defeat at the hands of a strong combined Chelmsford side in Danbury. Our team fought gallantly and kept the match very tight until the final 6 boards where we suffered quite badly, the manual scoresheet may be found here.

The league continues with a home match against Southend & Leigh in March, if you're interested in representing Hutton please let Tony French or a member of the committee know.

* a redrafting of FL rules has caused this result to be restated as 6-14.

Loughton take revenge!

Following their 20-0 drubbing just before Xmas Loughton took revenge on 26th January with a 13-7 victory in our most recent challenge match. Details for those brave enough to look can be found in the results calendar with the manual scoresheet on the information tab.

Despite the outcome and a somewhat late finish our team contines to enjoy making friends around the county and gaining experience, please contact a member of the committee if you wish to join in the fun.

Merry Bridgemas!!!

Our Xmas Party was attended by 37 members (plus some in spirit who had kindly sent homemade food) and 3 guests all of whom enjoyed a thoroughly good evening! Along with the normal duplicate we had some fun prizes, delicious food (exceptional Xmas cakes), excellent wine and witnessed some dodgy Xmas jumpers all in the company of a couple of shady Xmas Elves. Dennis hosted the evening in a flashing tie and presented the winners of this year's competions with their trophies to enthusiastic applause (please see seperate section). No really, nobody looked silly!

The club would like to warmly wish all of it's members and guests throughout the past year the compliments of the season, may you have good health, weath and happiness next year. We hope to see you at the club very soon!

Club Competition Results 2015

Congratulations to David Clark and Dennis Valtisiaris, who won the 2015 Club Championship on Monday 19th October.

Winners of the ladder competitions were as follows:-

  • Individual: David Clark
  • Pairs: David Clark and Dennis Valtisiaris
  • Improvers: Sue French
  • Handicap: Bettie Simpson

Very well done to our winners, and thanks to all for taking part!

Those awfully nice people from Loughton Bridge Club were sent packing in our latest challenge match with Hutton victorious by 20-0 vps. Regardless of the outcome a superb night was had by all and Loughton have moved quickly to organise a return match already! Please see the results calendar for the Scorebridge output or this box headline for the full manual scoresheet. Of particular note is an excellent card from Tara and Jagdish with just 4 negative boards – but well done also to the rest of our team who led from the outset and never looked in trouble!

The Friendly League kicks off in February but we will continue with occasional challenge matches as well – please let a member of the Committee know if you’d like to be involved with this aspect of the club and join in the fun and cupcake eating.

Beardy disaster fails to derail Hutton train!

In November the 4th's challenge match a disastrous board 11 -1400 score led to Upminster holding a lead at the break, but only by a tiny margin. Then our magnificent team showed their greater experience to totally dominate the second half and become an unstoppable runaway train en route to a huge 20-0 victory! Take a bow Bettie & Julian, Sue & June, Tara & Jagdish and Brenda & Frans - a thoroughly enjoyable night was had by all.

We're currently scheduling other 'friendly' challenge matches against local clubs, please let Tony French or a member of the committee know if you'd like to play - your club needs you!

AGM 2015

This years AGM was well attended and took place on Monday 26th October immeadiately prior our normal bridge session, the minutes are here.

2015 Friendly League - Finals Night

Sadly, Hutton narrowly lost their last match so ended in third place and couldn't retain our trophy. Tony French writes:-

Party ruined on board 19! As well as costing us the match a single disastrous board destroyed any chance of our team holding onto 2nd place in the league as the Friendly League season came to a close in a very enjoyable party atmosphere at Barleylands. On behalf of the club I’d like to thank all those who have represented us and tried so hard, slightly disappointed with 3rd spot but it has really been a joy having you all as teammates and your support is greatly appreciated. The hosting and general help of Frans and Brenda also has our special thanks and congratulations must go to our regular Angela Fenton. Having been selected for the County Squad we will now miss her in our team next season. Speaking of which, planning is underway for next term and as this competition truly is a great introduction to team bridge and perfect for development of players Hutton DBC remains fully committed to it. Please do let me know if you’d like to play, we also plan some challenge matches so even our newest members or anyone who wishes can be included in the club’s programme.

12th May saw the Challenge match against Upminster Bridge School, which Hutton narrowly won 11-9 after a first half shock from Upminster saw them race into a big lead. Sue’s cupcakes and Upminster’s homemade cookies at the interval must have revived our team as experience prevailed to take the bragging rights – just! A great night was had by all, many thanks to all participants.
