Becket Keys School (formerly Sawyer's Hall College)
Sawyer's Hall Lane
Essex CM15 9DA.
See the "Information" page for directions: please take care using the postcode on your SatNav as it may take you on a wild goose chase up the Ongar Road.
We are a friendly medium-sized club and are very welcoming of guests or visitors on all occasions. As well as the weekly club duplicate we host special events such as the Club Championship, Spring Individual, EBU and Charitable Simultaneous Pairs, the Fledgling Fours and a Christmas party. We also have a welcoming and active social scene with an annual weekend holiday. The first Wednesday session of each month is known as 'Friendly First Wednesday' and is especially suited to the less experienced.
If new to the game you may learn to play bridge with us and we also offer coaching and mentoring.
The club fields teams in all the major Essex and some national competitions and has been known to do well, please follow the menu buttons on the left for more information.
Learn – Play – Socialise – Compete
If you wish to play but need a partner please contact Carol McCue via email or 01277 655785 and we will do our very best to accommodate you.
Many congratulations to David Piper and Graham Beeton who won the 2018 Club Championship Pairs on Monday 8th October.
This season's competitions are under way and very hotly contested, the current leaders are shown below:-
Our new Play & Learn session started on Monday 8th October at Hutton Community Centre - 13:00 - 16:00.
Up to 18 boards with hand records are played and discrete questions may be asked of the session leaders, inexperienced players may refer to notes and although etiquette will be observed it will be fully explained. The club is ideal for any player undertaking lessons, any with limited experience, those just returning to the game or anyone looking to test new systems or partnerships. This is a highly social and friendly session looking to gently introduce players to our club and the scene at large, any player/s at any standard looking for a game on Monday afternoons are most welcome. The session will be scored manually and uploaded to this website but not EBU graded.
The club is hosted so there is no need for a partner, the session costs £2.50 for club members and £4 for others, membership is not obligatory but anybody undertaking a formal course with us is already automatically a valued club member.
Existing members at any standard are most welcome to come along, experienced players are most welcome to offer their assistance.
In any field, regardless of size or strength a score of over 70% is always considered exceptional. Dorothy and Alaric Cundy scored 81.58% last night, a fabulous achievement richly deserved by two of our most valued members. Very well done indeed!
Worth noting that according to our site the SOF was 49.55%, in fact not so weak either...... drinks on the Cundys at the weekend!
Many congratulations to '3 Hot - 1 Not' comprising of Sheila Edwards & Anne Blake with Rose & Roy Matton on their convincing victory in the most recent Fledgling Fours team event.
'The Mighty Whites' - our very own Jil Ibrahim & Sue Camp with John Tumbridge & Tom Dewhurst were very worthy runners-up indeed having won every match including the one against the eventual competition winners.
This time around saw a particualrly hard fought event with nine teams fighting it out amid some giggling and laughter, proving bridge can be fun & competitive at the same time! Our Class of 18' team also gave a highly respectable performance and gained experience of team bridge at an early stage, they'll be formidable friendly foes very soon!
Well done to everyone who took part and thank you for a magnificant evening's entertainment.
The club is arranging a visit to the Comedy Store at the Holiday Inn Express in Brentwood on the evening of Thursday 29th November, please let Tony know if you would like to come chuckle with us.
We’ll be having a two course meal followed by the show featuring 3 comedians, the cost is £15 for just the show or £30 to include the meal. As always we are an inclusive club, friends, partners and family are all very welcome..... even if the weirdos don't play bridge!
Update: after some effort booking as a group directly with the hotel resulted in the booking fee being waived. We are currently a group of 24 so if you wish to join us please contact Tony to avoid the fee and to be seated with us.
Last year's winners of the Club Pairs Jon & Coral put up a strong defence in an attempt to hold on to their title in this year's event on 10th June, unfortunately they lost out narrowly and had to settle for a splendid runners-up spot. Linda & Dave B also put in a good effort and managed a creditable 8th place but sadly that was not quite enough for us to retain our team trophy.
Tara & Jagdish also gained some valuble experience and managed to finish above a couple of much more experienced pairs, so all in all it could be considered a good day!
A very well done to all our players and thank you for representing Team Hutton.
The following events may be of interest to members:
Monday 29th October: AGM - The club's AGM is held before bridge this evening, please arrive for 19:00.
Thursday 29th November: Social - Brentwood Comedy Club - We're visiting Brentwood Comedy Club at the Holiday Express on Brook Street, all members, guests and friends most welcome. £30 including dinner, doors open 19:00.
