Competition Rules

  General Competition Rules
  1. Summer Pairs Handicap is decided on the best 6 results, played with the same partner, from the 8 rounds available.
  2. Summer Trophy is awarded to the individual earning the most points in all available rounds of the summer Duplicate Pairs.
  3. Winter Pairs Shield is decided on the best 5 results, played with the same partner, from the 7 rounds available.
  4. Summer and Winter Teams (members only) must be registered in writing on the Notice Board prior to the first round. Any number of substitutes are allowed.
  Winter Teams Competition
  1. Team entries with four named players and the captain clearly identified are to be made at least one week before the first round.
  2. The CAPTAIN must make every endeavour to field a team for each round. In the event that this is impracticable then the tournament director MUST be notified as soon as possible, and before play is due to commence.
  3. SUBSTITUTES are allowed without restriction except that they must be paid-up members. They may substitute for more than one team.
  4. Scoring will be by Victory Points converted from imps on the appropriate EBU scale. The team with the highest total over the six rounds will be awarded the Dorothy Burrows Shield.
  5. A team arriving late will concede 3 imps per un-played board to the non-offenders.
  6. A team unable to play in a round and having advised the director to that effect will be awarded 40% of the available VPs.
  7. A team failing to arrive without having notified the director will receive 40% of its average for the rounds already played.
  8. Any team not playing in the final round will score zero.
  9. The winning team may not play together as a team in the following season.
  Summer Teams Competition
If we run the teams on a Swiss/Danish basis, at least 8 teams must enter prior to the start.
Other teams can enter at any stage provided they intend to play in the remainder of the
competition.  Visiting teams can enter for one week only at the discretion of the director.
Sufficient notice must be given by any new teams intending to play.

Teams once entered are expected to turn up.  Any number of substitutes are allowed,
who may play for more than one team during the competition.  If you have trouble
finding substitutes please ask for help.  If it is impossible for a team to play please
inform the director in advance.

Each team will play 4 six-board matches each session, with 20 victory points at stake in each
match.  They will not play against the same team twice during a session (Swiss principle).
They may however play against the same team in successive sessions, but not in successive
matches – i e they will not play the same team last in one session and first in the next
session.

Teams receive 8 vp’s for each match not played, applicable if they miss a session or enter
the competition late, or enter for only one session, but no vp’s will be awarded for missing a
match in the last session.

With an odd number of teams exceeding 8 there will be a trio for the first two matches and
another trio for the last two.  One team, but not two teams, may play in the trio twice.

If less than 8 teams turn up for a session they will play a multiple teams competition for that
session.  Victory points out of 80 will be awarded for the session.

The last session will have slightly different rules:

No new teams will be allowed to play.

If there is an odd number of teams, for the first two matches there will be a single trio
playing six-board matches, but for each of the last two matches there will be a trio
playing three-board matches.  The bottom three teams will play in the trio each time,
with no restriction on how many times they play in the trio or how often they meet the
same team in the trio.

The purpose of these different rules is to achieve the fairest possible final result.
