Hand of the Week (from 29/2/2012)
This almost ordinary hand ordinary hand produced a different result at all11 tables. That’s extraordinary! It’s a wonderful hand. This hand illustrates one of the drawbacks of the ‘weak NT’.  West will open 1Splanning to rebid 1NT or 2NT; if nothing happens East responds 1NT‘wrong-siding’ the contract.  [Terrible verb, great idea!].  Declarer looks to make S-2, H-1 D-1 and C-6 without breaking sweat.  Only one pair bid 3NT! Two were in 2NT. Something does happen - North makes a weak jump overcall, - I opted just for 3D. One pair played in 3D, one in 4DX and another in 5DX.  All failed but S-1, H-2 and D-6 should not be too difficult. What other bids were made and were any successful?
One South opened 1S and got to 4S and was doubled losing 800! More reasonably EW played in spades; after 1S – 3D East might choose to bid 3S.  Agreed, 4C is impossible with just 6HCP but a negative double would be ideal suggesting clubs – no one got into that suit!  Anyway after 3S, 1 West passed and 2 pushed on to 4S.  Two of them did manage 9 tricks though I don’t think the play would be easy, though a diamond ruff and a finesse of ♠J followed by a second ruff with ♠10 might help and would sideline North for sure.
