The Vivian Whyde Trophy
The Vivian Whyde Trophy

Vivian Whyde was a founder member of our bridge club and after her death, her daughter, Lesley presented a trophy to the club in 2000.  In recent years, the competition for the trophy has taken place over nine months, from August to April on the third Thursday of the month.  Members can play with different partners, if their regular partner is unavailable and their individual percentage scores are averaged out over the time period.  The best six scores out of nine are counted and players have to participate a minimum of six times.  In 2015-2016,the winner was Brian Bullock with an excellent score of 61.21%. He was closely followed by Kathleen Wildman, his regular bridge partner, who also had a very commendable score of 60.17%.  In joint third place were Anthony and Marion Chappell, who had been at the top of the results table for months, with a final score of 59.32%.  Congratulations to all these members.

Cocker Cup 2016
Cocker Cup 2016

The competition for the Cocker Cup was held over six Thursdays in January and February. Members were able to play with different people, if their regular partner was not available and their best four scores were averaged to provide the winner.  In 2016, the joint winners were John Mathieson (pictured) and Henry Conway with a score of 59.94 % and in joint second place were Kathleen Wildman and Brian Bullock with a score of 56.70%.  John and Henry were presented with a quaich, donated to the club by Philip Cocker.  Philip was one of the three founders of the club and was well known in local bridge playing circles around Preston.  A former teacher, he was very knowledgeable about horticulture and enjoyed honing his culinary skills. A quaich is a two handled Scottish drinking cup, so we are sure John as a Scotsman will celebrate accordingly.
