Hayling Island Bridge Club was founded in 1975 by Leon Davies and his wife Pamela, and by Cecil and Irene Coe. The original officers of the Club were:
Leon Davies (Chairman)
Joan Wyatt (Hon Secretary)
Graeme Symons (Hon Treasurer)
Leon used to teach bridge at Adult Education classes held at a local school. Attendees of those bridge classes were amongst the first members of the Club. For the first few years the Club met at the Sporting Man's Club on the seafront. Rubber bridge was played on two evenings each week.
The Sporting Man's Club is shown on the left of this old postcard.
Cecil Coe introduced Duplicate bridge into the Club, organising and running the duplicate evenings which replaced one of the rubber bridge evenings. This format of one rubber bridge evening and one duplicate bridge evening every week has continued to the present day.
When the Sporting Man's Club was re-developed, the bridge club moved to St Andrew's Church in Southwood Road. Alan Shore recollects that the then vicar "...was very helpful in providing a large curtain to minimise the draughts."
Soon the Club moved again, this time to the United Reformed Church in Elm Grove.
With the building of a new community centre in Hayling Park at the planning stage and due to be completed in 1981, Leon Davies became a member of the community centre committee and was able to further the interests of the bridge club in making it a suitable meeting place. The bridge club subsequently moved to the community centre.
Between 2005 and early 2012 the Club met at a local school, but is now back at the Community Centre.
