Comments on Board 14, May 17th
Board 14 from Happy Bidders Bridge Club, May 17.

This board played in 4H 12 times and 1 each in 5 and 6H, making 5 or 6.
Reaching 4 hearts is easy, E opens 1H, W replies 4H. A nice simple bid, but what if E as a big hand, E has no chance to investigate.
How as can W keep the bidding alive? West knows there is a game in hearts, with 11 high card points and a 13 point hand with a heart contract.
Do E and W have a convention(s) to deal with this type of hand? Bergan raise or 2/1 where responder can respond with rule of 20 or a 13 point support hand. I know this is going where few fear to thread. What is your meaning of 3H? Will 2 Clubs show 10+ and 5 cards in clubs?
Bergan raise:
If one types "Bergan raise bridge" into any search engine a lot of entries are shown. Applies to responder when partners opens 1H or 1S in first or second chair, No bid on right hand side, and no interference. Now with 4 card suit support and 7+ points, time to work on a Bergan response. "Standard Bergan" 1) 7-10 points respond 3C, 2)10-12 points respond 3D, or 3) 13+ points Jacoby 2NT. Opener now knows the point count and the suit and proceeds. You may notice there is no 1NT in this list. A Bergan bidding sequence for discussion:
E - 1H
W- 3D (10- 12 points, hand 4 card H support and 11 HCP points).
E - 3S (with 18+ HCP, opener can introduce a new suit)
W - ?? (Crap, which is the most important, show the AD or bid the 5 card C suit. E has shown 9 or 10 cards in the majors;4 left in the minor suits. Going for slam, show first round control, now opener is ready to ask the question or not. Without Roman Keycard response, E will just go 6H.
Showing Clubs E will assume W has AC but is concerned about diamond suit (K**). Blackwood does not solve which A W holds. Therefore sign off 4H's.
2/1:
E - 1H
W - 1NT or 2C (Interesting a) 1NT response 6-12HCP and forcing for one round and no information on heart suit, can respond in H on next round or 2) a 2 Club response "game on response in 2/1" with an opening hand: Be creative: this hand is a 13 point response hand, or opening on the "rule of 20". Either bid will keep E bidding to game.
E - 2S with 18 HCP but not a NT hand, or 20 points in a suit contract (same bid on either of E's response)
W - 3H confirming the heart suit.
E - 3S What are the alternatives: in the 33 point range for a small slam. If E wants to continue cue bidding is employed inquire about W's controls. East can keep the bidding open with a 3S response showing slam interest and spade control.
W - 4D NO Club Ace but the have the Ace of diamonds.
E - 4NT Does W have the QH? With Roman keycard (1430)is part of the 2/1 system.
W - 5H (one keycard and queen of trump)
E - 6H ( 3 A's. 3 K's, singleton and the Q of hearts)

Express your views, comment or ask questions, Irene and Ray should be able to answer them.

Thank you very much,
Brian
PS: No responses, means I will not look for another interesting hand.
