GOSPORT BRIDGE CLUB
Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday 28th August 2012 at Stubbington Methodist Church Hall.
The meeting opened at 1900 with Chairman Roz Reid in the chair and 33 members present.
1. Apologies for absence.
Apologies for absence were received from Sue Poole, Eve Pritchet, Beryl Bradford, Meta Bird, Pam and Glyn Thomas, Jane and Ian Christie, Madeline Lawson, David Evans and Karen Dewar.
2. Minutes of the previous AGM held on 30th August 2011.
These minutes had been displayed on the notice board for the last year but the Secretary briefly summarised them and they were accepted as a true record; proposed by John Jones, seconded by Mac Nurmohamed.
3. Matters arising.
Para 7. EBU Matters. At the last AGM concerns had been expressed the P2P fees could rise sharply and the membership had set a limit of 50p to the maximum they would accept without the need for an EGM. In fact P2P fees fell well within this limit, no action was needed and membership fees and table money remain unchanged.
4. Chairman's Report.
Roz started report by stating that the year of the Jubilee and Olympics had been an eventful one for another Team GB (Gosport Bridge). Thanks to the efforts of Jean Ruskin we had found and moved to a new venue, The Methodist Church Hall, which although slightly smaller was more comfortable and cheaper than our previous venue with the great advantage of storage for tables and equipment. Celia Carter had put us in touch with the Hammond Hall Memorial Trust and Keith Palmer had persuaded them to give us a grant for the purchase of Bridgemates thus bringing the Club into the modern age of electronic scoring. Keith gives a tremendous amount of effort to help the Club, not only is he teaching us to use Bridgemates, he has also set up a new website for us. Roz and the committee are very grateful to him. Competition Team GB was just beaten in the final of the Solent Trophy by Southampton and we got to the semi finals of the Basingstoke Cup where we were beaten by the eventual winners. Individual pairs John Jones and Adrian Fontes came 8th in the Brighton and End of Year National Congresses, Phil Downham and Mac Nurmohamed were 30th out of 1452 in the National Summer Sims, and Karen Dewar and Mac Lowcock won the Pottage Hampshire County Pairs competition. In Club Competitions the Championship Pairs was won by Mac Lowcock and Ken Dunn; The Mixed Pairs was won by Shirley Corner and Phil Downham. Trophies were presented to applause. Roz reminded the meeting that annual subscriptions were due. She hoped the membership would continue to support this great club but asked that members should not be too excited and absorbed by their Bridgemates rating to forget the courtesies of the game.
5. Treasurer's Report.
Phil Downham presented the Club annual financial summary. We had made a loss of £l,63l over the year most of which was due to the purchase of Bridgemates, but we still had a balance creditor of £1,450. Fee for hire of the hall will be less than before so we should start making small profits from table money; we do have to pay a small annual insurance premium. P2P fees were higher than in 2011 merely because this is the first full year we have paid them. John Jones has yet to inspect the
accounts but subject to this the accounts were accepted; proposed by John Jones, seconded by John Petit.
6. Election of Officers.
The current Officers and Committee members were willing to stand again and it was proposed by Adrian Fontes, seconded by Tom Hogarth and carried unopposed that they all be re-elected. There is a vacancy for another committee member and volunteers would be welcome. The committee for the next year is
Chairman Roz Reid
Vice Chairman Edna Stratton
Secretary Phil Runchman
Treasurer Phil Downham
Scorer Keith Palmer
Committee Members Shirley Comer & Jean Ruskin.
7. Appointment of Inspector of Accounts.
John Jones agreed again to be our Honorary Inspector of Accounts. Proposed by Edna Statton Seconded by Jean Petit.
8. Any Other Business.
(a)The Programme for next season is available from the Chairman.
(b) Owing to Methodist Church rules we shall not be able to serve wine at the Christmas Party. The committee had considered booking an alternative venue just for the party but after discussion the membership felt they could accept the lack of alcohol, those who wanted/needed a drink could adjourn to the Red Lion
The meeting closed at 1925 so that members could play bridge.
