COVID policy

GBC is open for F2F bridge through the festive season.  Our policy is that wearing of masks is considered desireable.  Manual contact restrictions are not in place but hand sanitiser is available.  We understand that members may prefer caution and not wish to attend.  The situation will be constantly reviewed and you should follow the website for confirmation.

Marjorie Gilbertson

I am sorry to report that Marjorie Gilbertson has passed away.  Her funeral will be on 30th March 2021 at Gilroes crematorium at 11am

I first met Marjorie and Don in the 1980s when, together, they won the Hyman Crammer trophy in 1983 and 1987 and the Otto & Edith in 1994.

Marjorie played regularly at Blaby and the County Bridge Club and in national congresses. Marjorie was a fine bridge player, reaching the rank of Premier Life Master.

Marjorie won the Leicestershire ladies pairs seven times, with four different partners, her most recent success being with Judy Hill in 2019.
She won the Leicestershire Cup in 1999, the Butterworth Trophy in 2004 and the Leicestershire Plate in 2018.  She was regularly selected to play for her county.

For the last ten years Glenfield were privileged to have Marjorie as a member and a representative of the club in the Leicestershire League.

Our sympathies go to Marjorie's daughter, Jane, and all her family and friends.

Sad news about Bharat

I am shocked by the news that Bharat died suddenly at home yesterday.

I first met Bharat more than thirty years ago at the Leicester Bridge Centre.  I was impressed by the warm and friendly greeting, handshake and introductions when we arrived at his table.  His bridge was competitive and played with considerable flair.

His first success came in the Leicester Mercury Student Trophy in 1989.

After the Bridge Centre closed, Bharat transferred his loyalty to Glenfield and his partnership with Jenny Grant enjoyed considerable success at county level including the Samani Silver Salver, Otto and Edith Bowl, Stanley Trophy (twice with Jenny and once with Peter White).

Bharat's most recent successes were last year, when he won the Otto & Edith Bowl (for the fifth time) and Leicestershire Cup Plate.

Bharat's was the first name on the team sheet for Glenfield teams in the Leicestershire League and National Inter Club Knockout.  He represented Leicestershire many times in the Porter and Markham leagues.

Our sympathies go to Bharat's family and friends.

Laurence Popple

I am sorry to report that Laurence Popple has passed away.  Laurence was one of the best players at Glenfield Bridge Club, representing the A team for many years as they climbed from division 8 to division 1.  With his partner, Terry Downs, he won the club championship pairs three times and The Helen Doughty four times; three of these occasions  in the competitions' original format where it was not handicapped.  When the event became handicapped for the first time; he won that too, despite losing 5.14% to his score.  Our sympathy goes to Laurence's family and friends at this sad time.

Sad News about Mary Bradley

I am sad to report the death of Mary Bradley.

Mary was a founder member of the club and for many years took responsibility for organising refreshments and for making people, especially new visitors, welcome to the club.  Until recent years, she regularly represented Glenfield in the Leicestershire League. In 2018, with Peter Geary, she won the Helen Doughty Memorial Trophy.

Our sympathies go to all of Mary's friends and family.

Eileen Cooper
We are sorry to have to inform you that Eileen Cooper passed away on 29th March. Her daughter, Joan, informs us that she had a peaceful end. She will be remembered for her many talents (in particular her beautiful decorated festive cakes and her knitting, as well as her bridge of course). Her daughter plans to hold a thanksgiving service once we are allowed out again.

John Morrey

I am sorry to report that John passed away on 13th November 2019.

John was a long standing member of the club, playing for the A team with his partner, Jim Wilde.  After Jim passed away, John donated a trophy, the Morrey-Wilde Shield, which is presented to the winners of our annual mixed pairs competition.  John, himself, won this competition in 2011.

John suffered from poor eyesight in his later years and was, sadly, unable to play bridge.  Nevertheless, he continued to support the club by attending our parties and AGMS and serving as a committee member until April 2019 .

Dennis Bradley

Glenfield Bridge Club has lost part of its foundations.  Dennis Bradley sadly passed away on Monday 5th November after a long battle against ill health.  He was a founder member of the club and, for twenty plus years, the club treasurer.  The club honoured his contibution by making him the first, and only, life member.  He enjoyed long and successful partnerships with John Hudson, Peter Neville, Margaret Glover and Geoff Mead and, with Peter, was one of the first club players to enjoy success at county level with a succession of wins in the George Taylor simultaneous pairs.  His life was celebrated at St Peter's on Thursday 15th November at 1330 with many of his former bridge partners in attendance.

.We wish Mike & Tricia all the best in their new home which, unfortunately, is too far away for them to continue to visit our club.  We thank them for their support and being such pleasant opponents for so long and hope they continue their bridge successfully at new clubs.  If they are ever in the area, they will always be welcome to come back and visit.

Buildrite

Congratulations to Peter Neville & Tim Glover on winning the Buildrite.  In a close finish they were nearly overtaken by Audrey Mount & Mary Johnson whose score of +1050 against the leaders on board 26 wasn't quite enough to propel them to the trophy.  Audrey & Mary finished second to earn an invite, along with the winners, to represent Glenfield in the Hyman Crammer on 8th May next year.

Minimum Standards for Opening Bids

Players are reminded that their one level opening bids should comply with the rule of 19 and that the minimum expectation of a bid described as a strong two is 18 high card points and 5 controls; where an ace is two controls and a king is one.

To check for compliance with the rule of 19, add the number of cards in the two longest suits to the number of high card points.  If the total is less than 19 the hand does not meet the minimum standard for a one level opening bid.

Where the opening bids do not meet the above standards directors have been instructed to award the worst of the score achieved or 40% at pairs, -3 imps at teams of four or -4 imps at teams of eight.

Committee

The Committee met on 20th July 2017.  We discussed how the committee and club members could better support the organisation of Wednesday and Saturday evenings and the charities to be supported by next year's Charity Swiss Teams.  Margaret Glover kindly agreed to help find partners on Wednesday evenings and help Nick Daniels do the same for Saturday evenings.  We are keen to identify some members who could help with the opening up, setting up, directing, scoring and clearing away on both nights.
