Bulletin

Bridge the Gap will play on Tuesday 6 January and there will be bridge as usual on Friday 9 January 2009.

The results for 19 December show both the raw results and the handicapped results. The handicapping takes account of your average results over the last quarter. Congratulations to George Newbery and Ron New who won the N/S handicap competition and Millie McGibbon and Marion Wield who were victorious sitting E/W. The handicap prize for the highest handicapped score will be awarded to George and Ron in the New Year, together with the ladder prize.

Our next weekend away

Our next weekend away has been finalised. It is to Woodcroft Towers Hotel in Bournemouth on 9 - 11 January and Sandy has arranged an amazing deal with them.

Sylvia Freeman

We were saddened to hear of the untimely death of Sylvia Freeman. Recent members will not have had the pleasure of knowing Sylvia but she was an active and popular member until ill health prevented her playing much in the last few years. Until her first stroke, she regularly played for the A team, mostly with Ruth Marshall. She learned bridge in one of Jean's classes and her talent for the game quickly showed. With her partner from the same class, George, she swept all before her and won every student competition going, becoming a Club Master before the end of her first year of classes. She will be missed.

Our next bridge weekend

Our next weekend away will be to Woodcroft Towers Hotel in Bournemouth on 9 – 11 January.

A warm and friendly welcome awaits us at the Woodcroft Hotel set peacefully on Bournemouth’s famous East Cliff in an acre of beautiful lawned gardens.  This is a modest privately owned hotel and its rooms have the latest comforts and amenities.  A few minutes walk from the Woodcroft brings you to the cliff top with fantastic views to the Isle of Wight, and the beaches and town centre are close by.

Sandy has arranged a super deal with them and the cost per person, either sharing a twin/double room or for single occupancy, will be just £115, which includes all accommodation except Saturday lunch, as well as bridge, seminars and gratuities.

The bridge programme

There will be duplicate bridge on Friday and Saturday evenings. On Sunday we start play at 10.45am after a sustaining breakfast and finish about 2.30pm when afternoon tea will be served. After the prize giving, we expect to be on our way home about 3.00pm.

The seminar programme

As well as the usual duplicate programme, Jean will be leading three seminars on the theme of choosing the opening lead. The opening lead can be the most difficult part of defence – and often the most critical. Get it right and you defeat the contract; get it wrong and declarer makes that extra trick. The seminars during the weekend will cover various aspects of leading against both trump and no trump contracts and help you to choose the right lead more often.

The seminars will take place late Friday afternoon after we arrive, Saturday morning and a short final one on Sunday morning. This means you will still have time to explore Bournemouth.

¨              You do not need to come with a partner.

¨              Non-bridge playing partners are welcome.

¨              You may attend as many or as few of the seminars as you wish.

Bookings must be made with Sandy by Friday, 24 October latest.  After this date the rooms we have reserved have to be returned to the hotel

Please ask Jean or Sandy if you have any questions.

The small print.                                       Please read this.

1. A booking is confirmed once we have received your payment in full. We do not operate a system of deposit and later payment because it increases our administrative costs and hence the cost of the weekend.

2. If you cancel, we can only return your money if we can sell your place to someone else. This is because we will still have to pay the hotel.

3. The cost does not include any insurance. You are recommended to arrange this.

4. Your contract for accommodation is with the Woodcroft Hotel. We are responsible for the bridge only.
