Bulletin

Membership renewal was due at the beginning of July and it has been held at £5 for 2008/09. Membership forms have been sent out by email and paper copies may also be collected at the club.

Our next weekend away

Our next weekend away has been finalised. It is to Woodcroft Towers Hotel in Bournemouth on 9 - 11 January and Sandy has arranged an amazing deal with them.

Celebration hands

We hope you enjoyed playing the very challenging hands made available by Young Chelsea to celebrate their 40th anniversary and to raise money for their chosen charity. It is always interesting to read expert commentary afterwards. If you did not get a copy of the booklet and would like one, please email Jean or Sandy and we will send you one.

Congratulations to Hilary Hinman & Beverley Sawyer playing N/S and Hazel Edwards & Jackie Tenant playing E/W who most successfully made the most of the opportunities the cards presented. They will be awarded small prizes next Friday.

Life Members
Life Members

We are pleased to announce that Nigel Dorian (on the left in the picture) and Ron New have been awarded Life membership of the club.

Nigel is a relatively new player but he has been of inestimable help in setting up this web site and we would not have achieved as much as we have without his help.

Ron is one of the nicest men you could wish to meet and week in, week out when we have arrived to set up the Colston Hall Ron has been there to help, often slipping us a sweetie on the way!

We are grateful to both of them and this is a small token of our appreciation.

Weekends away
3rd September 2008

We meet on Friday afternoon at Gerrards Cross Memorial Centre from 1.30pm until about 4.30pm.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly and accessible club and visitors are most welcome. We operate a host system so you can be sure of a game if you come without a partner.

Table money is £4 (£5 for non-members) including tea and biscuits.

We play computer generated hands, made up at the table and hand records are available to take away together with a detailed discussion of one hand.

We are pleased to be sponsored by Salisbury Financial Services of Gerrards Cross

September prizewinners
September prizewinners

This quarter's ladder prize was won for the second time in succession by Hilary Hinman with an average for this quarter of 59.04%. Congratulations also to Ruth Marshall who gained 58.55%, Tony Killian on 56.21%, Rosa Proctor with 56.13% and Hilary's regular partner Beverely Sawyer who scored an average of 56.11%.

The Handicap Prize was taken by Janet Graham and Frank Rich who scored an outstanding 68.24% when their handicap is taken into account.

The Tuesday afternoon Bridge the Gap ladder for this quarter will not be resolved until the last day of September. It is very delicately poised with Paula Whittaker and Shirley Bland on 58.81% leading Carol and Jerry Rudge by 0.12% and Noel Connolly on 56.48% is not out of contention.

Sarah Sheilds won the Summer Tuesday evening students' ladder with 56.09%. We look forward to welcoming her and all the other students to our regular sessions when they finish their course.

Classes 2008/09

We all long for a partner who makes clear bids, is a brilliant declarer, a tiger in defence and yet is kind and understanding when we make that occasional error. Does such a shining example exist? If so, can I have their phone number!

In the absence of such a paragon, what we all need as bridge players are people with whom we can play. The saddest sight in the world is three bridge players looking for a fourth. So we are taking steps to ensure a healthy supply of players.

At Gerrards Cross we run a full programme of classes for beginners. We make sure learning goes forward in very easy stages so that each step is fun. So if any of your friends and relations are thinking of learning to play, point them in our direction.

For full details of classes for beginners at the Memorial Centre please go to the pages about classes.

Bridge the Gap

Jean started The Garden Room Bridge Club over ten years ago as somewhere her students could play when starting out on their bridge careers. Over the years this has grown and become tremendously successful but in so doing has perhaps become somewhat less suitable for very inexperienced players.

The Tuesday afternoon session in the Garden Room at Gerrards Cross has been started to meet the needs of students and less experienced players. We play perhaps 14 or 15 hands with a good tea break. There will be lots of help available with the mechanics of moving and scoring and if you are really stuck you can ask for help with bidding and play!

Our Friday afternoon sessions continue unchanged. Friday afternoon members are most welcome to join us but must understand that the bridge will be geared to the needs of complete beginners.

Table money at this session is £5.
