This had will open 1S. South passes and West bids 2C. Now the bidding gets interesting. North knows that E/W has a game in one of the black suits but should want to disrupt the bidding. North can bid 2H as a lead directional bid but our experts felt that either 2N (Eric Taylor), showing the two unbid suits, or 4N (Jon Shuster and Pat Thompson) showing the same with unusual distribution was the best. South now has a clear picture of where to go. Even if E/W gets to 6S, N/S will happily bid 7D.
East, as dealer, has a clear 2S opener. West with 24 HCP needs to find out if there is a slam in spades or no trump. Jon Shuster recommends an immediate 4NT bid, key card asking in spades. East responds 5C (1430) or 5D (0134). Even if West asks about the spade queen (5D), East will give an affirmative bid. With four of the five key cards, the pair will end in 6S, down 1. A diamond lead spells death to a seemingly well bid slam. Jon Shuster reviewed the STaC bidding on this board to find that only 34 pairs out of 264 playing the hand bid 6NT. Of the 137 pairs bidding 6S, 94 went down.
