Jon Shuster reported this 'fix' against him at the November 28th Gatorbridge game, Board 10.
Karla (West), with Billie Boyd as her partner, played this very tough 4S contract, against Evelyn Kleinsasser (North) and me. The contract made for a top (7/7).
The bidding went as follows:
Billie Jon Karla Evelyn
1D P 1S P
2NT! P 4S
Bidding Comment: 2NT is fully acceptable (a slight underbid). I prefer 2H a reverse. But over 2H, Karla bids 2S, Billie 3NT and Karla would now bid 4S. This is much tougher road than Billie’s approach, but 4S should be the final contract, regardless.
The Play: Evelyn led the DQ which certainly could be short, and Jon played an intentionally encouraging 9. (There is no need to show count where dummy has such a strong holding). Karla next played three C, ruffing the third, finessed the HQ, cashed the HA, pitching a D, and ruffed a H. Next, she crossed to the DA, assuring the contract as long as I cannot ruff this. She had won two tricks in each side suit and two ruffs in hand for a total of all eight of the first eight tricks. She still had S-AQ107 and D-8 in her hand.
At this point, she should have given up the D, but instead ruffed the 4th H with the 7. Evelyn overruffed with the 9, cashed the DQ (I should have ruffed this, but it would not have done me any good). Either way, Evelyn is endplayed now or on the next trick had I ruffed.
Nice going Karla on a hand well played! - Jon Shuster
