Player of the Month for January 2018

Please join me in congratulating Jim Clark, our Player of the Month for January 2018.

Jim jumped in feet first almost immediately after joining our first Easybridge! group in September 2016.  He took to our game readily and is absolutely fearless, never being afraid to take on even the most accomplished players.  He has made wonderful progress, but that is a two-edged sword for me, because he is no longer eligible to play in that original group that meets on Tuesday night.  We all miss him very much.

This fine fella also is a real whiz at making boards for our games and has even taught at least one other person how to assist with this never-ending job.  All of us who utilize hand records in attempting to improve our games owe him a big "thank you" for his efforts.

A big part of the reason that our club looked so nice during the holidays was because Jim hauled boxes up and down the stairs to the attic, decorated a tree, strung lights, and helped in the windows.  He truly is willing to do anything he can to help out, and we are so lucky to have him as part of Fun and Games.

Thank you, Jim!

Tuesday Morning Games

There is now an Open on Tuesday mornings that is run at the same time as the 0-299er. This game is now set up exactly the same way as the Friday morning game is.  Additionally, the limited section on Sunday afternoon has been changed to 0-500.  This change was felt to be appropriate, since the Life Master rank now requires a total of 500 points.  If you need a partner for any of these games, please feel free to call the directors.  Their names and phone numbers are listed on the calendars that are at the club and that were sent out via email late last month.

Chance to go to Nationals

January 28 on Sunday evening is a GNT game (teams). It
will be an OPEN game, and everybody and anybody that wants to
put together a team is welcome to join. As it is part of the GNT our
club/unit/district contributes money so the teams that win at the
district level can have a little help getting to Nationals next summer,
so the cost is $12. It's worth making an effort to come and have a
fun team game and contributing a couple dollars to this cause even if
you aren't intending to go any further down the road to district level
and national level games. Hopefully a team or two from Oklahoma
City ends up being merrily sent on their way to represent our district
at the Nationals in Atlanta.

STaCs Scheduled Games

Fun and Games has STaCs scheduled for Monday evening, January 29th at 6:30 pm, Tuesday morning, January 30th at 10:30 am, Wednesday evening, January 31st at 6:30 pm, Friday morning, February 2nd at 10:30 am, Saturday afternoon, February 3rd at 1:00 pm, and Sunday afternoon, February 4th, at 2:00 pm.  The master point limited sections on Tuesday and Friday mornings and on Sunday afternoon are eligible for silver, as well.  If you need silver points, this is your chance!

District 15 STaC Games

On Monday, January 29th, the District 15 STaC games begin and will continue all during that week.  All awards in these games are silver.  These games are run as Open Championships with STaC rating (about 82% of Sectional rating), so there are extra points awarded. The strats for these games are predetermined by the District and are as follows:
A   2000+
B   750 - 2000
C   0-750

The strat where you and your partner play is determined by the average of your points.  Please note that the Director cannot change these numbers.  The District also imposes additional fees for these games ($8 per table or $2 per person), but the increased awards, along with the fact that the awards are silver, are compensating factors.

Tuesday Morning Game Change - January, 2018

The Tuesday morning 0 - 99 game will be changing as of January 2, 2018.  It will occupy the same time slot, but there will be two sections:  0-299 and an Open.  There will be a mini-lesson at 10:00 am, and the game(s) will begin at 10:30 am.  The director will be our resident human dynamo, Gloria Smith.

This game will be identical in make-up to the Friday game; the only difference will be that it's on Tuesday.

This new Open game will be added to our other Opens (none are being discontinued). These other Opens are held on Monday evening at 6:30 pm, Friday mornings at 10:30 am, Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm, and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 pm.  Additionally, there is an Invitational Open on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm.  As always, Ron and Jo Henke also offer their Invitational Opens on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 11:30 am, following Ron's lessons at 10:50 am.

Educational Offerings: Beginning Bridge and Defensive Bridge

Beginning Bridge    Beginning on Thursday, January 4, at 6:30 pm, Gloria Smith will present a ten week course on beginning bridge.  Each class will last for two hours.  For pricing and other details, please contact Gloria at (405)340-7707 or gs7089@swbell.net.  There have already been several inquiries, so if you know of anyone who is interested, please feel free to pass Gloria's information on.  She has placed some fliers in the mailbox outside the front door, as well.

♠ ♠Defensive Bridge♠ ♠  Sylvia Jackson has generously offered to complete the Defense course begun last year.  The last four lessons will take place on Saturday mornings from 10:00 am until noon on January 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th.  Each one will be offered at $15.  There are still a couple of books available at cost ($12), if you need one.  Sylvia believes (as do many others) that defense is very important and volunteered to take on this project.  There will be a sign up sheet at the club in early December, or feel free to contact me or Sylvia if you are interested in attending any or all of the lessons.

Increase in Game Fees

The Board of Directors has reluctantly voted to increase the price to play to $10, effective January 1, 2018.  This decision comes after realizing that most of our costs have increased over the last year and a half, and that the amount needed to defray expenses and have a contingency fund cannot be provided by the current $8 charge. Coupled with increases announced by UPS and other carriers that will be passed on to Baron Barclay, Amazon and our other suppliers, the necessity of this increase is inescapable. While the Patron Program has been very successful, that money was raised with the promise that it would not be used as operating income, but rather to insure the long-term viability of Fun and Games.  All of us are committed to keeping that promise.  Despite the increase, we believe that playing bridge at Fun and Games provides good value for money spent and will continue to work hard to insure that that is the case going forward.

Mentor/Mentee Program

Fun and Games has a Mentor/Mentee program called Go.Buddy Bridge.  Many of you have probably seen the materials at the club.  For this program to be successful, we will need plenty of Mentors.  There is a brief training program for them, so there won't be any misunderstandings about what the program entails, and it is a one time committment only  Mentees please remember that in order to have a Mentor, you must agree to be one.

Contact Paula Boone, the coordinator, by filling out a form that can be found on the front registration desk.  She will match up the Mentors and Mentees, or you can just let her know if you have someone in mind.
