BEST PRACTICE FOR GETTING HOME AT A REASONABLE HOUR.

1) CHECK BOARD AND PAIR numbers before taking out cards.

2) MAKE the opening lead BEFORE filling in your score card.

3) Dummy to put down their hand BEFORE getting absorbed in their own admin.

Declarer can get on and plan /play  rather than sit there watching tops of heads and pen pushing. We could rattle through the evening if just these suggestions alone are acted upon by everyone.

Wednesday Beginners and Improvers
What we do on Wednesdays.
What we do on Wednesdays.

IF you learnt Bridge years ago and are wondering if you could play again, or maybe you have recently been having lessons and want to try out your new found interest or are a kitchen table bridge player interested in trying duplicate Bridge then you should be coming along to Framlingham Bridge Club on Wednesday afternoons. Throughout  the year Rick and Fleur Waters and Jacky Driver are on hand to help anyone interested in playing duplicate bridge.  We will all help, but our help is not as useful as theirs.

As the name implies Duplicate bridge is when there is a set of deals which is played by every pair and the results are compared to see who was most successful. On Wednesday we play around 12 hands, but immediately after playing each hand we reveal our cards and have a chat about how the auction and card play went. It it very informal, and usually a little noisy as the discussions (aka chatter) flo back and forth.

If you wish to come along for a taster then please do so; there is no need to let any of us know beforehand but if you do then at least one of us will be looking out for you. When I say 'taster' I don't mean the biscuits served at tea time. However if you stand near the biscuits you will surely meet us all and especially Glyn (see action photo of Glyn -below).

Feel free to call any or all of us: , Jacky Driver 01728 724951 or Jill Bowring 01728 602938.

The cost for a whole afternoon's entertainment, tuition , tea/coffee and biscuit  is £2.00. That can't be bad, can it?

Crib Sheet (Bridge for all, No fear Bridge)

Click on the title to get a PDF of the crib sheet with the system as taught by EBU  and by No Fear Bridge - a very good web site for beginners, as is VU - Bridge.

FRAMLINGHAM WEDNESDAY SIMPLE SYSTEM

Below is a simplied system, and differs a little from the above crib sheet. The main difference is that  Fleur, Jacky and Rick will suggest that you when you make an opening bid with 2 four card suits in your hand you should bid your cheapest suit first, this is shown on this crib sheet.  On the other crib sheet is a fuller description of beginner's bidding system- it is the one that is taught by EBU and will be recognised by many students. In this system if you have 2 four cards suits you will open the higher ranking suit, unless you have hearts and spades in which case you open with a Heart bid. The main thing to remember is that both you and your partner know which system you are both using.

OPENING BIDS

RESPONSES

1 NT 12/14 flat, no singleton

2♣  is 'Stayman' asking if opener has a 4 card major. Opener bids it, or 2 if not. With both majors bid  's first, bidding ♠ 's first denies a 4 card  holding.

Other 2 level suit responses are weak, to be left.

3 level suit bids are 12+ with at least 5 cards, forcing.

2NT is 11 or 12 points; 3NT is 13+

2NT 20/22 flat, no singleton

Can be passed; suit bids show at least 5 cards

Stayman as above

3 level suit bids are weak with at least 5 cards, to be left

1 level suit bids 11/19, 4 card suits bid ‘up the line’ & 5 card suits down

1NT 6/9 points, 2 level bids show 10+ pts and 5 cards

2  / /♠  openers are strong, 20-22 or 8 playing tricks, forcing for one round.

2NT denies as much as an A and K

2♣  = 23+ or forcing to game

2  denies as much as A and K

3 level suit bids are weak 6-10, pre-emptive with at least a 7 cards suit

SLAM BIDDING

RESPONSES

Blackwood [asking about the number of aces held]

5♣ = 0/4, 5  = 1, 5  = 2, 5♠  = 3

After P responds, a bid in the trump suit ends the bidding. Any other bid asks for kings; responses are the same starting with the next higher suit.
