BEST PRACTICE FOR GETTING HOME AT A REASONABLE HOUR.

1) CHECK BOARD AND PAIR numbers before taking out cards.

2) MAKE the opening lead BEFORE filling in your score card.

3) Dummy to put down their hand BEFORE getting absorbed in their own admin.

Declarer can get on and plan /play  rather than sit there watching tops of heads and pen pushing. We could rattle through the evening if just these suggestions alone are acted upon by everyone.

Filling in the Traveller correctly
Filling in the traveller (scoring)

SCORING YOUR HANDS

Scoring each week takes about an hour on a good day and all day on a bad day! A bad day is when the scorer has to telephone people (who are never there, which may mean the job dragging on for days. If the required information on the first traveller we can work out any errors quickly.

NORTH has responsibilities:

to write the names and other details of the first table on the back of the traveller

and to enter the score of each hand on the traveller.

EAST has responsibilities too: to check that the details written by North are correct.

It is important that everyone who plays can fill in a traveller. There is bound to be someone at the table with patience and kindness to take a new or uncertain North through the process.

Please write legibly, preferably in block capitals. If you can’t, don’t sit North!

  1. FILLING IN THE DETAILS ON THE BACK OF A FIRST TRAVELLER.

First make sure that both pairs know their number. Your number is shown on the movement card on the first table. Note your number for the evening on your scorecard.

These are the just THREE simple things we need written clearly by North on the back of one of the travellers at your first table. It is all on the movement card on the table.

  • The TABLE number

  • N/S PAIR NUMBER and BOTH NAMES

  • E/W PAIR NUMBER and BOTH NAMES

North must INSIST that E/W check the details. You would be surprised at how often this is forgotten or written incorrectly. If you do forget then make sure that your names, pair numbers and orientation on that board are entered on the back of a later traveller for a board you play.

2. FILLING IN THE SCORE. This too is North’s job.

When you have played the last trick, before you discuss anything else or fold your hand all four must agree the tricks made. Then enter the details for the hand in the row against N/S’s number as follows (if there is already a score in that row call the director).

  1. Put E/W’s number (from the movement card at the first table) in their column (make sure they have it right; look at the movement card on the table!).
  2. Put the contract e g 3H* in the contract column (do NOT put the tricks made as well),
  3. Put who (N, S, E or W) played it in the ‘By’ column.
  4. Put the tricks made (either + or – how many, or the actual number of tricks made) in the tricks column
  5. Put the score, e.g. 500, in the correct column.
  6. INSIST that E/W check that the details are ALL correct
  7. Fold the traveller & put it into the board

Sitting out. If you sit out it is helpful if you can write ‘Sit out’ on the traveller on the correct  N/S line.

Hand passed out (nobody opens the bidding). You must write ‘passed out’ on the correct line.  Never re-deal.

Thank you for a few seconds work!   From the grateful scorers.
