Revokes

Revokes would not be an issue if all partners (including Dummy) asked their partners, on the first occasion when they did not follow the suit lead, the following simple question “ Having no…....?”

If a revoke occurs on the 12th Trick of a contract then there are no penalties and the revoking card is substituted for the played card. Note this may alter the winning of the 12thand 13th tricks.

The revoke is established when a lead is made to the next trick.
The revoke can be corrected prior to that point. The card used in the revoke becomes an exposed card but only for the Defending pair. (Declarer and Dummy can do no wrong).
If Declarer makes Dummy revoke, then Dummy and the Defending Pair should inform Declarer immediately and not wait for the revoke to be established.

The next question to ask is – Did the offending side win the trick in which the revoke occurred ?

1.      If the offending pair did not win that trick and did not win any subsequent tricks then there is no penalty

2.      If the offending pair did not win that trick but did win one or more subsequent tricks then they receive a penalty of one trick.

3.      If the offending pair did win that trick but did not win one or more subsequent tricks then they receive a penalty of one trick.

4.      If the revoke card wins the trick and the offending pair wins one or more subsequent tricks then they receive a penalty of two tricks.

5.      If the revoke trick was won by offender's partner then one penalty trick is awarded and a further penalty trick is awarded if a trick in the revoking suit is won by the offender.

6.      The offended pair do have the right to make an appeal to the Tournament Director if they believe that the one or two card penalty is considered an insufficient penalty for the damage done to them by the revoke.
