1. ESSEX TEAMS OF FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

for the GRANT CUP (A Green Pointed Event)

Entry fee: £30.00 per team                                                           Closing date for entries:  31st May 2014

Championship prizes: 1st: £100; 2nd £50. Plate prize: £20

The Winners or Runners–up will have the opportunity to represent Essex in the Pachabo Cup.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

1.   All players must be full members of the ECBA.

2.   A team can consist of up to six players, only four of whom need be nominated at the time of entry. All players must be eligible to play for Essex in the Pachabo Cup, and to play for the county in the current season if selected.

3.   The competition is a knock-out teams event, score by IMPs and will be in two parts:

Championship: There will be a progressive knock–out for the Championship.

Plate: (if > 4 teams) with a new draw.  All first and second round losers (if < 32 teams); plus third round losers (if > 32 teams) are eligible to take part. 

4.   In the Championship the semi–final will be of 48 boards, and the final 64 boards. In the plate the final will be of 48 boards. Captains may agree a lesser number.  All other rounds will consist of 32 boards.

5.  The first round must be completed by the end of September and the whole competition by the end of April of the following year.

 

2. ESSEX SWITCH CUP FOR TEAMS OF FOUR

Holders: Martin Smith, Sandy Smith, Paul Mollison & Val Mollison

Entry fee: £18.00 per team    Closing date for entries: 31st May 2014                Prizes: 1st £80, 2nd £40

The contest will be a knock–out and four players only will play in any one match.  Each match will consist of 30 boards of duplicate bridge with aggregate scoring.  Each player must play with each other member of the team for an equal number of boards; the captains play against each other for the whole match.  The team captains will be notified of the draw and play-by dates once the draw has been made. The final will be a match of 48 boards, each member of the team playing 16 boards with each other.  Captains may agree a lesser number.

 

3. ESSEX MIXED TEAMS OF FOUR CONTEST

for the ALLEN – SOPP BOWL

Entry fee: £20 per team.                                                                                    Prizes: 1st: £48, 2nd: £24

Date: Wednesday, 28 May 2014          Venue: Writtle Village Hall                            Starting at: 19.30

This is a single session event for teams of 4 open to all members of the ECBA.  Each team must contain at least one man and at least one woman.  Each team will play as many of the other teams as possible.

 

4. ESSEX EXPERT EVENT FOR THE WARBOYS CUP

Entry fee: £20 per pair                                                         Prizes: Medals to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Entry is by invitation only and is directed to A and B squad members.  If a pair exceptionally feel they would like to be considered please send an email CV to Audrey Hartley.  Players must be available to play in the Tollemache and the Metropolitan Cup if selected.

 

 5. ESSEX CLUB PAIRS COMPETITION

This is a new event for club members who are not members of the Essex squads.

Entry fee:£10 per pair                                                              Prizes: Medals to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Date: Sunday, 22 Jun 2014                 Venue: Barleylands                                           Starting at: 13.00

Essex clubs are invited to enter up to 4 pairs to represent their club in this competition.  Players must not be members of any Essex squad.  Players will play about 32 boards with a short half-time break. The first two pairs will be invited to represent Essex as the 3rd C team in the Metropolitan Cup with the 3rd pair as reserve. There will also be a cup and a prize of a set of 24 packs of EBU cards for the club whose top two pairs have the highest combined score.

 

6. GEORGE CURTIS MEMORIAL TROPHY

Now a Blue Pointed Event

This is a two session Swiss teams event for teams of four open to all members of the EBU.  The organizers reserve the right to change the competition to multi-teams if there are too few entries.

For the purposes of this competition a “PRO” takes part in EBU and/or ECBA tournaments (not “Play with an Expert”, “ProAm” or “Essex Club Pairs”) and an “Am” include all other players..  Please inform the Hon Secretary if you don’t know a suitable partner; and she will be happy to find one for you. Clubs have been asked to help arrange partnerships.  Refreshments and afternoon tea will be provided.

There are three single session Senior Day-time Pair events. The three sessions will be combined to award the Essex Seniors' Cup. The joint ages of each pair must be at least 110, with the younger at least 50.  Each event will commence at 10.30 for tea, coffee and biscuits and play will start at 11.00.   There will be a break for lunch provided by Impulse Catering.

 

9. Daytime Pairs League

This competition is designed to cater for all levels of players.  In divisions of approximately 10 pairs, players will play matches of about 8 boards each against all other pairs in their division.  New comers to the event will be placed in divisions according to the EBU new grading system. A “pair” can consist of 2 or 3 players. At the end of each season 2 pairs will be promoted and 2 pairs demoted from each division, with some flexibility.

 

10. ESSEX LEAGUES

Entry fee: £20 per team for the season

The Essex League is divided into two areas – South East Essex and West Essex. The season runs from October 1st – April 30th, with approximately one match each month. Forms for next season will be sent to all clubs and present teams in early summer. Teams can be entered by clubs, or by a group of players (up to six). There are several divisions for each Section, so there is room for all standards of players, though newcomers may have to work their way up!

Novice/non-expert teams are invited to take part as well – there are special divisions for you.

11. Eve Goblets

The Eve Goblets will be awarded to the best man and woman player giving allegiance to Essex for 2014–2015 based on a points scale relating to the events.  These scales may be adjusted next year to take into account the changing nature of our competitions (details will be posted on the web site).

Conditions of Entry for Essex Contests and Heats

1. Membership: All players must be EBU members and ECBA members for other than blue pointed events.  This does not apply to the less experienced players in “Play with an Expert” and “PRO/AM”.

2. Entries: All entries should be sent either via the website or direct to the Hon. Tournament Secretary:

3. Payment: Payment for each entry can be made by electronic transfer or by cheque made payable to “The Essex Contract Bridge Association”.  Payment can be made on the day with an extra charge of £1 per person but it is preferred that it is made in advance.  In the event of a withdrawal 24 hours or more before the competition the entrance fee will be refunded.  If the withdrawal is within 24 hours refunding the entry fee is at the discretion of the Tournament Secretary.

4. EBU Portion: Entry fees for EBU events include the EBU portion.

5. Size of Venue: Entry for all Competitions is dependent on the size of the venue.  Entries will be refused when an acceptable level is reached.

6. Withdrawing: Entries by email and the website will receive acknowledgements but any other entries will not.  Reminder cards will not be sent for events.  If you enter a competition and you are unable to attend, please notify the Hon. Tournament Secretary immediately as there may be a waiting list.

7. Late Entries: Late Entries at all events are at the Tournament Director’s discretion.  Players entering on the actual day of the competition will be levied an additional £1 per player.

8. Refreshments: Refreshments will be tea and coffee only unless the event description says otherwise.

9. Rules of Competitions: The Laws of Duplicate Bridge apply to all events.  Any dispute in private matches must be referred to the County Committee.  In multi-table heats the decision of the Tournament Director must be accepted.

10.   Private Systems: Private systems of bidding are not allowed.

11.   Convention Cards: All players should have identical convention cards at all our competitions and these should be available to the opposition throughout.

12.   Session Length: A session is approximately 24/26 boards, 3hours.  Bidding boxes will be used in all events and most events will use bridgemates.

13.   Master Points: Local Points are issued at Essex competitions in according to the EBU scales.  The Pairs and the Teams of Four championships carry Green Points.  The National Pairs heats, the Swiss Pairs and the George Curtis Swiss Teams, open to all EBU members, carry Blue Points.

14.   Home Venues: All matches played in private homes should be played within the county boundaries.

15.   Teams: In team events players must play at least a third of the boards to qualify for Local Points.

16.   Match Results: In knockout events and league matches the result must be sent to the Hon. Tournament Secretary or Hon. League Secretary, by email with cc to the other captain, or on a postcard signed by both captains, immediately after the match giving full details of scores and teams.

17.   Knockout Results: The result of a match sent to the Hon Tournament Secretary cannot be changed.

18.   Prizes: Prizes will be, in general, in the form of Vouchers.

19.   Correction Period: Where results are available at the end of play the correction period will be 24 hours after the results are made available.  Where results are calculated later and published on the website the correction period will be 3 days from the date of publication.
