August Hand of the Month

The opponent’s lead and cash three top diamonds and then lead the ace of clubs.

How will you proceed?

Write down your plan for the next 6 tricks. 

Answer

  • Always count top tricks first:-2 spades and 6 hearts.
  • Two short – where will they come from?
  • Yes you need to ruff the opponent’s ace of clubs with the 7 of hearts but this is not an extra trick.
  • You must ruff spades twice in dummy - BUT do not try ruffing with the two - it can easily be over-ruffed. 
  • The 8 and 9 are master trumps and you can afford to use them for ruffing with all master trumps in declarer’s hand.                                                                                    
  • You should use the 2 of hearts as an entry back to declarer’s hand for the second spade ruff.
