| BEST HAND EVER? |
The biggest hand (by a long way) I have ever seen occurred on Board 10 in the Green Section on 12th March. North picked up 31 points, AKQ, AQJ6, AK9, AKJ. The South hand was 653, K8, 762, 96532. Several pairs bid 6NT but only 2 pairs recorded +1440. How should you play this hand in 6NT? You have 11 top tricks. To make a 12th either (1) Cash the ace of clubs (just in case the Q is singleton), enter dummy with K hearts and finesse J clubs. 50% chance of success. Or (2) Retain K hearts in dummy. Play AKJ clubs. This line works either if Q or 10 of clubs falls singleton or the clubs break 3-2 - you make the 12th trick with either the J or 9. I think this line has the greater chance of success. Note that if the clubs are 3-2 with the Q doubleton you make all 13 tricks! In practice line 1 succeeded and line 2 failed as the clubs broke 4-1. Bad luck if you took line 2! |
