Please let me know of any inaccuracies in the information presented (as records aren't always complete) - Thank you, Peter Sykes (Ex Chair).

Welcome to Durham Bridge Club

Durham Bridge Club

Welcome to our website. Durham Bridge Club is a friendly club that meets on a regular basis to play duplicate bridge, usually pairs, but occasionally teams. Visiting pairs are always welcome to any session. The club meets at Framwellgate Moor Youth & Community Centre, Front Street, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, DH1 5BL.

  • Tuesday evenings at 7:00 - 10:00pm: Standard 'level 4' conventions are permitted. The overall 'NGS' rating of players is about 55 (above average).
  • Tuesday Afternoons from 1:15 - 4:15pm:  a host system operates (no partner is necessary). There is an 'Open' section and when required a 'No fear' section. This session is popular with players with less experience, but all are welcome.
  • Monday evenings at 7.00 - 10.00pm: a supervised session  - ideal for novices wanting instruction in a 'real-life' environment or for players new to duplicate bridge.
  • Please ensure that you are seated at least 10 minutes before play is due to start.
  • Results of each Tuesday session are available immediately all hands have been played - and usually there are printed hand records.
  • Want to learn to play? The club usually runs a structured training course in the autumn.

Results Tuesday 28th November

The results for the 27th November are now available online. Please note that I do not at the moment have the database of the hands for either the afternoon or evening sessions.

I would like to apologise for the shambolic start to tonight's teams event. The club has printouts of a 12-team event where each team plays 8 others over 24 boards. However there are 36 boards in play. Since 24/36 is less than 70% the event wouldn't have qualified for masterpoints. It was therefore decided to run a different movement that allowed each team to play 10 others - 20/24 is well in excess of 70%. It was initiallly thought that each team would play 11, but this was in error - fortunately it allowed time for the start to be corrected. The movement has no cards printed to show each table who they would meet in each round, and there are no comments displayed to enable the director to call the first movement.

The hand records for this afternoon's event weren't distributed. However here is a guide for those who are unfamiliar with the format.

The results now include the hand records for both the hosted pairs and the teams event

1) Each box of hands contains 32 boards, which is TWO complete combination of dealer/ vulnerability. The laws of Bridge state that in each set of 16, each position is dealer four times, once at Love All, NS Vul, EW Vul and Both Vul

2) We normally play 24 boards since that number fits nicely into a 3-hour session (and it divides by 2 and 3)

3) If you look at a record for a single hand,

  • The hand number is shown at the top left corner
  • The dealer (NESorW) and vulnerability (None, N-S, E-W, Both) are shown in the top right corner
  • The number of high card points each player has is shown at the bottom left corner
  • The bottom right corner (in a box) shows the maximum contract that can be made double dummy by each player in each suit (and NT). This enables players to work out the 'par' contract and see if they missed a game/ slam or overbid

Committee Decisions

At yesterday's committee meeting several decisions were taken that affect members.

Because of complaints to the committee about slow play it is agreed that it is a club rule that a board may not be played if the first card has not been faced BEFORE the move is called

Evening players: it was decided to revert to the previous arrangement of Team evenings on the Tueday before an Interclub match only, so Tuesday 21st November will NOT be a team session but Tuesday 28th will be for both evening and afternoon sessions

Afternoon sessions are going to use duplimated boards which come with hand outs. It is hoped that these will be of use to learners who are trying to improve.

There are going to be a series of short and,we hope, helpful explanations of some basic EBU rules on the website and we very much hope that members will familiarise themselves with them. See 'Guidelines on Aspects of Bridge'
