| Awards for All Scotland |
Dunbar Bridge Club has been awarded a grant from Awards for All Scotland enabling the purchase of a dealing machine and associated materials in support of a project to enhance the enjoyment of the game for club members and to provide the opportunity of learning Bridge in the Dunbar area. Awards for All Scotland provide small lottery grants of between £500 and £10,000 to local clubs and organisations that offer opportunities for participation in a wide range of activities. Each application is carefully examined to ensure both the organisation and the project meet published guidelines.
Our project asked for card dealing equipment and associated materials to enhance the enjoyment of the game for members and to make the service of producing pre-dealt hands available to other clubs. It will also be possible to use this equipment to produce set hands for the training courses. Our project also indicated that we would offer bridge training courses and publicise these widely throughout the Dunbar area to encourage folk to learn to play. In support of this we have produced a quality leaflet that will be distributed to houses in Dunbar supported by posters and letters to various local bodies. The first Beginners training course begins on September 26th 2012. We have also been in contact with Dunbar Secondary School to offer bridge to pupils after school on a Friday. This is a new venture in East Lothian although some mini-bridge has been offered in at least two schools in the past
For the technically minded, the card dealing process begins when a computer programme generates random deals and the dealing machine places each hand into the new boards. A second computer programme examines each deal to identify how many tricks it is theoretically possible for each player to make. A record of the hands and the analysis can then be printed and handed out after an evening's bridge to allow players to examine how well they have done and discuss alternative ways of bidding or playing the cards.
