Welcome to Dublin South Region

  Welcome 2017/18 Season

Welcome to the 2017/18 Dublin South bridge season.  In particular, we welcome members of the region's three newly-affiliated clubs, Balally, Grange Golf Club, and Loreto

A full calendar of the Dublin South events for the year, along with notable CBAI dates is available for download here Calendar 2017-18.docx

The Dublin South region officers for the 2017/18 season are: President - Sheila Horkan, Deputy President - Bríd Kemple, Honorary Secretary - Máiréad Ní Oistín, Honorary Treasurer - Kevin O'Dea, and County Development Officer - Deirdre Fallon.

The CBAI has introduced a number of grading changes with effect from 1 September, which may require action from some of your members - full details are in the section below on this page.

In addition, there have been a number of changes to the Laws of Bridge with effect from 1 September - a summary of the key changes is available below on this page.

  Entry for Dublin South Competitions

Pre-entry is required for all Dublin South competitions with the exception of the Kay Downes Trophy (Novice pairs).

We would encourage you to enter for our competitions via the CBAI website using the following link  http://competitions.cbai.ie.  You will need your own and your Partner's (or teammates') CBAI numbers. Alternatively, you can email us at dsrbridge@gmail.com, or text our Regional Secretary Máiréad Ní Oistín at 087 6750393.

For the two 4Fun Teams qualifiers, the online entry system does NOT operate.  Entries should be made by email as above or by text to our County Development Officer Deirdre Fallon at 087 6632111.  In the case of the 4Fun Teams, we will accept incomplete entries (i.e. one, two, or three members of a team) and try to match them up with other entrants.  This is not always possible, so apologies in advance if this is the case with your entry - but we are nearly always successful, so don't be deterred from entering.

  CBAI Grading Changes for 2017/18

The CBAI has introduced a number of changes to the grading system which may affect your members.  The objective is to ensure that members progress more slowly through some of the grade bands than was previously the case.  As a result of these changes, certain members may have the option to apply to be re-graded downwards if they wish - but they must make a request to do so, otherwise the new grade will apply.

Specifically:

If a member gets an Intermediate B2 card and holds less than 2,000 Local Points they MAY apply to be regraded to Novice N1 (provided it is less than five years since they took their first lesson);

If a member gets an Intermediate B1 card and holds less than 1 National Point (5,000 Local Points) they MAY apply to be regraded to Intermediate B2;

If a member gets an Intermediate A2 card and holds less than 2 National Points (10,000 Local Points) they MAY apply to be regraded to Intermediate B1;

If a member gets an Intermediate A1 card and holds less than 5 National Points (25,000 Local Points) they MAY apply to be regraded to Intermediate A2;

If a member gets a Regional Master card and holds less than 40 National Points they MAY apply to be regraded to Area Master.

Please note that these options apply to ALL players in the categories listed above, not just those who have been recently upgraded.  A full list of all the relevant members has been sent to each club by the CBAI.  The process for requesting the regrading is that an application must be made via the Secretary of your home club to our Regional Secretary, Máiréad Ní Oistín (dsrbridge@gmail.com or 087 6750393), who will inform the CBAI, which will issue an appropriately amended membership card.  Regrading requests can be made at any stage up to 31 December 2017, but if any player affected wishes to play in any competitions in the meantime (including the Fanagan League), it is their current grade that will apply - so those opting to change should do so sooner rather than later.  Again, note that the regradings are optional - members can choose to stay at their current grade if they wish to do so, simply by taking no action.  And all grades will become final at 31 December 2017, with no further changes permitted.

  2017 Changes to Laws of Bridge

A number of changes to the Laws of Bridge have taken effect in Ireland with effect from 1 September 2017.  For anyone wishing to familiarise themselves with the changes, our National Tournament Director Fearghal O'Boyle has very kindly prepared this summary (based on a prior document prepared by New Zealand Director Murray Wiggins) 2017 Laws Changes.pdf
