2024 Season Under Way

The 2024 season is underway with Duplicate Pairs on Tuesdays and Individual Rubber Bridge on Fridays.

The first winners for the season in the Duplicate Pairs were Pat Shearer and Sheila Walls and while Dave Higgins and Sandy McConnachie will no doubt hope to repeat their 2023 victory in 2024 there are others who have ambitions to at least pinch the High Score title from them.

Clinton Rendall dominated the 2023 Individual Rubber Bridge Season and won the High Score award but there are others with ambitions in this competition too.  Roger Davies has laid down a marker having already scored in excess of 5000 points for both of the first two evenings of the season.  There are others too who hope to put in serious challenges to this pair.

End of 2023 Season

The 2023 season, which was interrupted by some weeks when play was not planned or not possible, is now over and the final results can be viewed via the Competitions tab for Duplicate Pairs and for Individual Rubber Bridge.  The players all know who the competition winners are already but the trophies (for winners only) will not be handed out until early in the New Year.  The results were as follows:

Duplicate Pairs
Winners - Dave Higgins & Sandy McConnachie (Average 65.34% for their best 10 scores)
Runners Up - Margaret Mainland & Linda Milne (Average 60.82% for their best 10 scores)
Best Single Session Score - Dave Higgins & Sandy McConnachie (72.50%)

Individual Rubber Bridge
Winner - Clinton Rendall (47910 points for his best 10 scores)
Runner Up - Graham Lyon (42630 points for his best 10 scores)
Best Single Session Score - Clinton Rendall (7120 points)

Congratulations to all these players and many thanks to all the players who have taken part in either or both of the competitions over the season and to those who have contributed with help or tasty snacks.  We look forward to welcoming players back for the 2024 season and hope that perhaps we will see some new players joining us.

Individual Rubber Bridge will restart on Friday, 5 January 2024 (numbers permitting) and Duplicate Pairs on Tuesday, 9 January 2024.  In the meantime:

Merry Christmas everyone and best wishes for the New Year

30th Anniversary Event
30th Anniversary Event

Dounby Bridge Club was established in its original form some thirty years ago back in September 2003.  Members have come and gone and only two of the original members, Sheila Lyon and her son Graham Lyon, are still active members of the Club.  On 1 September 2023 the Club held a 30th Anniversary Individual Rubber Bridge event to mark the occasion.  Sixteen players took part, playing six rounds with different partners. The prize winners were:

Overall winner - Iris Clyde (3410 points)
Runner Up - Clinton Rendall (3140 points)
Highest single round - Gladys Marwick and Margaret Mainland (1380 points)
Consolation prize - Jean Tulloch (820 points)

To my shame, I omitted to take any photos on the night and have had to resort to showing just a photo of the banner celebrating the event.  Sorry, prizewinners!!  Thank you to everyone who booked in to take part.

Many thanks to those who contributed to the buffet which amounted to far more than we could possibly eat between us but was delicious.  Well done everyone.

September 2023 Bridge Sessions

September seems to be a favourite month for players to take some of their annual holidays so weekly numbers of available players are lower than normal.  For this reason, please note the following:

Duplicate Pairs
There will be no Duplicate Pairs bridge during September 2023.  Bookings are open for October and we hope to restart the season then if sufficient players have returned from holidays.

Individual Rubber Bridge
The scheduled Individual Rubber Bridge sessions scheduled for 8 and 15 September 2023 have been cancelled.
The sessions for 22 and 29 September 2023 are being kept under review and a decision will be made on whether or not they can go ahead will be made nearer the time.

Individual Rubber Bridge - 22 September 2023

Please note that there will be no Individual Rubber Bridge at Dounby on Friday, 22 September.  We remain optimistic that we may be okay to play on 29 September but will confirm the situation nearer the time.

2021-22 Winner Individual Rubber Bridge

The Individual Rubber Bridge competition was spread over two calendar years because 2021 and 2022 both had short playing seasons due to COVID.  The lead in the competition changed hands several times, with both Graham and Clinton coming with a late challenge.  In the end it was Graham who won the trophy with total points of 46280 and Clinton was runner up with 44770.

Running alongside the main competition was the High Score competition.  Sheena held the lead in that competition with a score of 7030 points since the third week of the 2021-22 competition but again Graham made a late challenge to notch up a score of 7330 just three weeks before the end of the competition.

The Ladies Bridge Club in Kirkwall was wound up in the Autumn of 2022 and the Committee very kindly passed on to Dounby the Peggy Marwick Trophy for the highest individual score of their season.  Graham was therefore the first winner of the Peggy Marwick Trophy in its new home at Dounby.

2023 Individual Rubber Bridge

The 2023 season for Individual Rubber Bridge began on Friday, 6 January 2023.  We wish all players good hands and scores for the season and hope to see some tight competition.

In 2022 we switched from playing 7 rounds each week to 6 rounds but because there had been 7 rounds in 2021, the first year of the combined 2021-22 competition, for 2022 everyone scored an extra 500 points for the not played 7th round.  As we move into 2023 the number of rounds each week will be held at 6 and there will be no extra 500 points awarded except for a sit out round.

There are also changes to the way in which the weekly results and the overall cumulative results are presented on the website, following a request from my better half to make it easier to see the latest weeks results.

Select the Results tab from the main Menu and click on the date of the even to bring up a pdf page which has two tables.  The left hand table shows the cumulative position including average scores achieved and what players need to be scoring to move up the next week  The right hand table shows the results for the latest week in order.

Select the Competitions tab from the main Menu to bring up the pdf spreadsheet showing all the scores for the year with the rankings from left to right.

It is hoped that this will work okay but if members are not happy with the new way of showing the results, please let Iso know.t

2021=22 Winners Duplicate Pairs

Congratulations go to Dave & Sandy, for winning the 2021-22 Duplicate Pairs competition.  Their average score over their best ten scores was an impressive 63.58%.

Runners up were Linda Milne and Margaret Mainland who had been in the lead for the 2021 short season but lost that position when 2021 and 2022 were combined because both were short seasons.  Their average score was 57.94%, again a very good score.

Dave & Sandy also won the High Score competition with 73.21%

Well done to these two pairs and thank you to everyone who took part.

Best wishes to everyone for the 2023 Duplicate Pairs competition.

Individual Rubber Bridge Friday 3rd February 2023

Eleven players tonight and mixed fortunes with the hands. Three very good scores but some awful ones as well.

Top tonight was Sheena with 4,920 followed by Graham with 4,320 and Linda with 4,250.

No change with the scores total - Graham leading with 18,310 followed by Linda with 17,020 and Sheena with 15,870.

Thanks to Glad and Clinton for the lovely home bakes - made the poor scores almost bearable.

2023 Duplicate Pairs Tuesday Evening Competition

It has been decided that, due to insufficient numbers of players being available, play in the 2023 Duplicate Pairs Tuesday evening competition will be suspended with immediate effect for a summer break.  The aim is to resume the competition on the first Tuesday in September.  We hope all our players will have a great summer and return refreshed and eager to play in September.  Thank you to all those who have been supporting us in the competition so far.

2023 Individual Rubber Bridge Competition

Following our session on Friday, 14 April 2023 it was agreed by the players that we should continue to try to run the Individual Rubber Bridge competition on Friday evenings throughout the summer as usual.  We need to have a minimum of eight players for each session so the sessions will be a bit sensitive to regular players being away on holiday or otherwise unable to play, but we will do our best.

Individual Rubber Bridge Friday 9th December 2022

8 Players tonight so quite an early finish.   Dennis came first with 4,500, Iris was second with 4290,  Margaret M was third with 4.010 and Graham was 4th with 3,650.  These four all managed to drop a poorer score. Graham increased his running total by 150 so the score to beat next week is 46,280. Iris overtook Sheena and Dennis overtook Margaret, Pat and Linda.

All to play for next Friday with Clinton and Malcolm well within "catching" distance of Graham.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 2 December 2022

It’s always nice to have an even number for rubber bridge, and this was the case on Friday night when we had a turnout of three full tables.

Top for the evening with the help of a 1500+ score on the last round was Clinton with 5740 points. Dennis, newly back from his hols, shows a break does us good with a score of 5120. Sheena also dropped a score and came third with 4430.

Moving into the last couple of weeks of the rubber bridge competition, usually it has few changes or surprises, probable down to a couple of players, who have managed to get a lead from the pack, but even though this one has been held over a couple of years instead of one, because of covid, it still remains very fluid at the top of the table, changing weekly.

At the moment though, the top three in contention are Graham, presently on top with 46130. Clinton is second on 44770, and a score of 4890 would put him in first place, then there is Malcolm in third with an easy achievable score of 3940 needed too overtake Clinton. It could be a close one!

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 25 November 2022

Eleven players competed on 25 November.  At the request of someone who shall remain nameless but not too far from where I am sitting, the full results are being shown here as well as the cumulative results in different formats on the Results Calendar and Competition - Rubber Bridge pages.  On 25 November the full results were as follows:

1st  Graham 7330
2nd  Malcolm 5930
3rd  Sheena 4480
4th  Clinton 4470
5th  LindaM 3790
6th  Glad 3650
7th  Iso 3300
8th  Iris 3220
9th  MargaretM 3210
10th Jean 2960
11th Pat 2910

Well done to Graham for his massive score which not only puts him in the lead for the High Points competition but also moves him up from 3rd place to 1st place for his best ten scores.  Malcolm also had a good score and he moves up to 2nd place with Iso now relegated to 3rd place.  Hot on her heels is Clinton.

Last updated : 9th Jan 2023 14:55 GMT
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 18 November 2022

Eleven players competed this evening.  The top scorer by a sizeable margin and with her best score of 6360 points was Iris. Iso, thanks in part to a good round when partnered with Iris, was 1840 points behind her with 4520 and third was Graham with 4260.

In the cumulative rankings, Iso holds onto first place with 42670 for her best ten scores but Graham with 42240 moves into second place overtaking Malcolm with 41930.  Clinton remains in fourth place with 41220 but is edging closer.  Iris's big score meant that she overtook Pat, Linda and MargaretM to move into fifth place with 40820.

Last updated : 9th Jan 2023 14:55 GMT
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 11 November 2022

We were down to just eight players this evening which led to fairly quick bridge and an early finish by around 9:15 pm.

Malcolm and Clinton had the best single round score, making 2030 points including two 700 rubbers.  Even that could have been better as a slam was missed.  Top score for the evening went to Graham with 4760 points followed by Malcolm with 4560 and Clinton with 4390.

Iso remains in first place with 41650 for her ten best scores.  Malcolm with 41340 and Graham with 41330 moved into second and third places, respectively, and Clinton moved up from sixth to fourth place. It does not pay to be away and Pat, in her absence, was relegated from second to fifth place and Linda moved down one place to sixth. Others remained in their same place in the rankings. With just five more weeks to go until the end of the season there is still everything to play for.

Last updated : 9th Jan 2023 14:54 GMT
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 4 November 2022

A good turnout of twelve players this evening so no stand in bidders required. The top three scorers were Iso with 4790 points, Graham with 4650 and Clinton with 4570.

In the cumulative score rankings for the best ten scores, Iso regained first place with a total of 41390 points, overtaking Pat who dropped to second place with 40230. Malcolm with 39970, closely followed by Graham with 39920 both overtook LindaM on 39450.

The biggest mover in the rankings was Clinton who has now competed on ten occasions with all ten scores currently counting.  He has a total of 38570 and moved up from eleventh place to sixth place.  He has the highest average score of all the players at the present time and has a low score to drop next time so if the current trend continues he may well be challenging for the lead soon.  Not that the rest of us will be planning to give in without a battle!

Last updated : 9th Jan 2023 14:54 GMT
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 28 October 2022

Nine players competed on Friday, 28 October.  The top scorer for the evening was Glad with 4290 points, followed by Clinton with 3840 and Jean with 3840.

It does not pay to miss an evening as there are always players waiting to take advantage to score well and move up the rankings.  This week Pat moved into first place with 40230 points for her best ten results, overtaking Iso on 39710.  LindaM held onto third place with 39450.  Lining up behind them are three players who have more than 38000 points so the competition will be fierce in the remaining few weeks of this competition.

Further down the rankings, Clinton over took Jean.  He has still only competed nine times so all his scores are counting but just more one week scoring all results and then he will start dropping his lowest scores.  But he is by no means the only one who just needs a good run of scores to be in the mix.  Still plenty to play for for everyone.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 21 October 2022

We were down to just 8 players this evening but, hopefully, everyone enjoyed themselves and there was plenty of banter as well as some interesting hands.

The top three players all scored over five thousand points.  Graham was top with 5830, including scoring 2460 in a single round when playing with Clinton. Iso was second with 5610 and Clinton third with 5400.

It was all change at the top of the rankings for the best ten scores to date in the 2021/2022 competition.  Iso moved up to first place with 39710, overtaking MargaretM, Pat, Malcolm and LindaM.  Pat moved into second place with 39590, overtaking Malcolm and LindaM, and LindaM managed to stay ahead of Malcolm in third place with 39450.  Further down the rankings the main mover was Graham who moved from eighth place up to fifth place.

May I remind players, please, to be sure to book in to play as early as possible as we have to give seven days notice to cancel if numbers are going to be low.  It is equally important to go to the website and indicate NP if you are a regular Friday player but not planning to play any week.  It really does help to keep things straight and clear.  Many thanks.

Individua Rubber Bridge - Friday, 14 October 2022

After a slightly delayed start, ten players took part with one table of four and two tables of three each round, so a bit of romping around to stand in for bidding.

Top score for the evening went to Malcolm with 4130 points, very closely followed by LindaM with 4120. MargaretM was a little further behind with 3840.

There were no changes to position at the top of the rankings with LindaM on 39450, Malcolm on 38820 and Pat on 38610 for their best ten scores.  A little further down Dennis overtook Iris to move into sixth place.

Last updated : 9th Jan 2023 14:54 GMT
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 7 October 2022

Thirteen players turned out to play this week, with one sitting out each round.  Sitting out gave folk the opportunity to sample the goodies brought along by Clinton and Glad but others managed to fit that in between rounds.  Many thanks Clinton and Glad.

Top score for the evening went to Pat with 4560 points, followed by Clinton with points and LindaM with 4100.  Clearly there were some good hands around although not all of us seemed to be dealt them!

LindaM' remains in first place at the moment with 38770 points for her ten best scores.  Malcolm remains in second place with 37670 but he is being chased by Pat, who moved up to third place with 37320, and MargaretM with 37270, who moved down to fourth place.  Further down the list Iris and Dennis moved up in the rankings.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Fridays 23 and 30 September 2022

On, 23 September we had two visitors to the Club, Annie and Itha, making our numbers up to 12 that evening.  It is a while since we saw any visitors so welcome to them both. Top scorer for the evening was Iris with 4650 points. A long way behind but in second place was Glad with 3210 points and third was Malcolm with 3140 points.  Seven players scored less than 3000 points. At the end of that evening the competition was still being led by Malcolm, followed by LindaM and Iso.

On 30 September there were 11 players, six of whom scored less than 3000 points.  Top scorer was Pat with 4930 points.  In second place was MargaretM with 4120 points and third was LindaM with 3730 points.  LindaM's good score moved her up to 1st place in the cumulative results rankings with 37840 points for her best ten scores, moving Malcolm with his 37670 points down to 2nd place. MargaretM's even better score saw her leapfrog both Graham and Iso to move into 3rd place with 36640 points.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 16 September 2022

Numbers were down to ten this week so, rather than have two sitting out each round, we had one table of four and two tables of three with a stand-in bidder each round at each of the three-player tables.  It works well and keeps folk on the move. Much better to be playing than sitting out.  There was nearly a disaster with the results on Iso arriving home on a very windy evening.  The score sheets were sticking out of her coat pocket and a gust of wind hit when she was getting out the car.  All the score sheets were whippped out of her pocket and blown around the yard.  Malcolm set off in hot pursuit and fortunately was able to retrieve them all before they headed off to Quoyloo.

Iris and Dennis managed to achieve two 700 rubbers, including a slam bid and made, to score an impressive 2840 points each in the third round.  With this help, Dennis was the top scorer for the evening with 5990 points and Iris second with 5700 points.  Dennis would have had an even bigger score if a potential slam in the final round partnered by Iso had been bid as well as made.  Some way behind Dennis and Iris was Pat with 4060 points.

The top three in the cumulative point scores are Malcolm with 38580, Linda with 37180 and Iso with 36100.  Dennis's good score enabled him to move up three places.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 9 September 2022

The 2021 and 2022 competitions are being combined because both Club years are short.  At the request of Members, the Individual Rubber Bridge competition has been reduced from 7 rounds to 6 rounds each week.  As there were 7 rounds for the 2021 competition it may prove difficult for players in 2022 to achieve the level of scores that were achieved in 2021 even on a good evening, which puts anyone playing only in 2022 at a disadvantage.  For this reason, the 7th round in 2022 will be treated as for a sit out round and 500 points will awarded to each person.  In 2023 there will simply be 6 rounds each week throughout the year with no extra points awarded.

Twelve pairs competed on Friday, 9 September.  Top score for the evening was Iso with 4800 points.  Dennis scored 4400 points and Pat 4300 points.

Taking the combined 2021 and 2022 competitions, Malcolm currently leads with 38580 points.  LindaM lies second with 36410 points and Iso third with 35360 points.

2021 and 2022 Duplicate Pairs and Individual Rubber Bridge Competitions

At the AGM it was agreed that, because the 2021 playing year was only 9 weeks and the 2022 playing year is also dramatically reduced to about 16 weeks, the 2021 and 2022 Duplicate Pairs and Individual Rubber Bridge competitions would be combined for the two years in each case, respectively.  The qualification for a final result in the combined competitions will still be 10 events played in the relevant competition.

The combined cumulative results of the Individual Rubber Bridge competition can be found via the Results tab.  Those for the Duplicate Pairs competition can be found for 2021-2022 under the Competitions tab.

Bridge Re-Starts

Finally we are able to re-start bridge at Dounby on the following dates:

Friday, 2 September 2022 - Individual Rubber Bridge

Tuesday, 6 September 2022 - Duplicate Pairs

It may begin a little tentatively as some regular players are not available but we very much hope that numbers will increase as we re-establish regular play.

And we're off!!

It has taken a while but finally we have re-started face-to-face bridge, the first evening being in the Individual Rubber Bridge competition. Twelve players competed, making for a relaxed evening with no rushing from table to table to stand in for the bidding.

There was a wide range of scores from below 2000 to above 5000 points.  The winner for the evening was Gladys with 5420 points. Some distance behind in second place was Clinton with 4440 points, more closely followed by Malcolm with 4280 points.  Well done to those three.

Duplicate Pairs and Rubber Bridge Cancelled this week

Please note that bridge at Dounby has been cancelled for this evening (Tuesday, 14 December) and Friday, 17 December in compliance with the advice from the Scottish Government about limiting social mixing to three households.  We apologise for any inconvenience that may cause.

We will look at ways to round off the 2021 season competitions into the beginning of 2022 so that trophies can be awarded.

Face-to-face play deferred until after Easter

Owing to the ongoing high COVID case numbers in Orkney and the planned absences of some regular players in the second half of March and early April, it has been decided to defer returning to face-to-face bridge at Dounby until Tuesday, 19 April for Duplicate and Friday, 22 April for Rubber Bridge.

Bridge Cancelled for 19 and 22 April 2022

If you wish to play the following week on Tuesday, 26 April or Friday, 29 April please be sure to use the Bridgewebs Find A Partner booking system by Monday, 18 April.  It is also helpful to know if you will definitely not be wanting to play by using the Not Playing (NP) option instead of the Playing (P) option.  Thank you.

Bridge Cancelled

As insufficient players are currently available to play and a number will be unavailable at different times during the summer, the decision has been made to cancel bridge through to the end of August.  We will review in August with the aim of restarting in September.  Have a great summer.

Individual Rubber Bridge Resumes

Finally, face to face Individual Rubber Bridge resumed  Friday, 8 October 2021 with eleven players taking part.  We were, of course, all masked up and there was much sanitising of hands, tables, chairs and other surfaces before, during and after the event and there were no refreshments available but at least we were back and everyone was in good spirits.  Thank you to everyone who attended for doing their bit to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus amongst our group and to or from the wider public by complying with the guidelines communicated in advance.

The top player for the evening was Linda Milne with a score of 4050 points.😊  She was closely followed by Margaret Mainland with 3950 points but then there was a large gap to Jean Tulloch who scored 2950 points.  With only a total of eleven possible weeks of play before we finish for Christmas and only one score to be dropped over that period it was important to get off to a good start.  Some of us didn't😢

Annual General Meeting

This is just a quick reminder for all Members of Dounby Bridge Club that the Annual General Meeting will be held at 6:45 pm on Tuesday, 10 March 2020 at the Dounby Centre.  We will keep the proceedings as short as possible, whilst still allowing as much discussion as Members want, and will then move on to play Duplicate Pairs as usual.

Last updated : 26th Sep 2021 13:58 BST
Play Suspended with Immediate Effect

In this corona virus pandemic situation, a bridge club setting must be considered to be a high risk environment in that:

  • a large proportion of our members are in the over 70s high risk group;
  • we are confined in a roome where we sit facing and breathing towards each other;
  • we move from round to round so that we play most other people present;
  • we handle boards, cards, bidding boxes, cloths, the bridgepads or scoresheets;
  • some may touch their faces or cough on their hands and then touch the cards, without even realising it;
  • we use mugs and spoons and may rummage in the biscuit box.

Stringent measures are being taken in different countries to try reduce the spread of the virus and it is looking increasingly likely that our own UK Government is going to announce in the near future that over 70s are to be isolated at home, probably for a prolonged period.  This has been rumoured to be four months but could be more or less.  We will have to wait and see.

Against this background, your Committee, in discussion with Orkney Bridge Club, has taken the decision that bridge at Dounby Bridge Club will be suspended with immediate effect so there will be no bridge this week or until further notice.  How long the suspension will need to be in force is unknown at this stage and will depend on how things develop and what announcements are made by the UK Government.

When there is anything further to report emails will be sent out to our members and other 2020 players at the Club and a note will be put up on the website.  Make the most of your time off and come back refreshed and eager when play is eventually resumed.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Season Ends and New Begins

Please note that the 2019 Individual Rubber Bridge season will end on Friday, 13 December 2019 and not on 20 December 2019 as originally intended because a number of players will not be available on the 20th.

Children in Need - Simultaneous Pairs 12 November 2019

This year's Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs event will be held on Tueday, 12 November 2019.  We play the duplicate hands as normal but our results are input to Ecats Bridge with players then being ranked at Club, National, Regional and World levels.  We score the hands normally for our Duplicate Pairs competition but when the results go to Ecats Bridge it can result in positions changing in the overall results.  There are no prizes as this is a fund-raising event, you just have the chance to see how you perform against other players around the world.

If you would like to take part, please enter your pair for 12 November, using the Dounby booking system, as soon as possible.  The table fee will be £3 on top of the normal table fee, ie £5 total for members and £6 for non members.

Last updated : 18th Dec 2019 09:57 GMT

Many thanks to all who took part in the Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs event on Tuesday, 12 November or gave a donation.

Although Sheila and Sandy came top at Dounby for our own duplicate pairs competition, when the results were uploaded to ECatsBridge and amalgamated with others, taking account of the twenty-four boards that count and the effects of frequencies and other scorers, they still lead for Dounby but it is Dave and Ben who are in front for Dounby in the overall results  Click on the link below to go to the ECatsBridge CIN results page and then select Overall, Regional, National or Club for the respective results so far.  These will keep being updated as more clubs submit their results.

Pat, Sheena and Hazel all dropped a low score but there were no changes to the rankings.

Westray 2019 Report.pdf

It was a great weekend and we were so lucky with the weather.  Lots of sunshine and quite mild so many of the group were able to get out and about walking or sightseeing in their cars.  It was even warm enough for Iris to lie on the beach.

Missing from the photo left are Bunty Pottinger, Sheila Walls, Iso Tipler and Jim Burgher.

2nd Update - BRIDGE TONIGHT IS CANCELLED

Update to message below.  An email was sent out to usual Friday evening players asking them whether or not they were planning to play tonight.  A few people have not yet responded but all of those who have responded have said that they do not intend to venture out tonight.  My inclination is to cancel as potential numbers from those who have not replied are very low - less than two tables.  I have sent a follow up message and asked folk to let me know their intentions by 5.30 pm and I will make a final decision then.

Weather update.  The roads were clear when we went in to Kirkwall about 11:30 am today.  When we left Kirkwall about 1:30 pm we kept meeting cars from the west with lots of snow on their fronts.  There had clearly been a recent heavy fall of snow and from Finstown all the way through Harray to Dounby there was a lot of snow lying on the roads with the tyre track areas becoming slushy.  We had no trouble coming through to Birsay but if it freezes later the slush may become very icy or it could all just disappear again during the afternoon.  Now that we are back home, it is snowing quite hard but it is falling on very wet roads because of the thaw yesterday and overnight so it probably won't lie.

I don't feel the conditions are bad enough to cancel bridge but it is, of course, up to you whether you venture out. It would be helpful to know how many people are planning to come along so that a decision can be made about whether to cancel due to low numbers.  If regular Friday players could email me on the club email address to let me know whether or not they are planning to play tonight I will be able to make a decision.  Thank you.

Duplicate Pairs- Tuesday, 29 January CANCELLED

In view of the snow in West Mainland and the condition of some of the roads, I have taken the decision to cancel bridge for this evening.  Please pass the word on to others who are booked in but may miss this announcement or my earlier email.

Malcolm went to Dounby earlier and there was thick snow on the roads which had not been snow ploughed at that time.  He had to stop and help a car that was stuck near Twatt church and when arriving home could not get up our driveway.

The Orcadian online has put out a notice about the closure of Dounby school this afternoon  and about some treachetous road conditions, especially in West Mainland.   I don't know about the gym but it is likely it is to be closed this evening too.

I may be being over-cautious here but think this is the right thing to do.  Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience and disappointment caused.

2019 Season

The 2019 Season will begin on Tuesday, 8 January 2019 for Duplicate Pairs and Friday, 11 January 2019 for Individual Rubber Bridge.  The 2019 membership fee falls due at the beginning of the season and is being held at £5.  Table fees are being held at £2 for members and £3 for non members.

The first Friday evening of rubber bridge will be a very relaxed evening with small token prizes for the individual winning pair for each round and for the overall individual winner and runner up.  The scores will still count for the 2019 season but so early in the year are not likely to be of great importance for the season as a whole.  All Members are welcome and all attending are asked to bring along an item of food or drink to contribute to the festivities but please don't bring too much.

Children in Need - Simultaneous Pairs 13 November 2018

This year's Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs event will be taking place on Tuesday, 13 November 2018, with the event also counting towards the Dounby Duplicate Pairs competition  has been running all year.

If you are interested in taking part, please book in on the Dounby booking system for 13 November as soon as possible.  The entry fee will be £5 for Members and £6 for Non Members, with £3 of the fee in each case being paid to ECatsBridge for the Children in Need appeal and the balance being retained towards normal Club operating costs.  We do have a few of the Dounby members away at the time of this event so it would be really good if others who don't regularly play would come along and help to boost the entries.

There is no prize for this event as it is a fund-raiser for the charity, so please just enjoy it and the opportunity to pit yourselves against players from other clubs.  The local results will be announced on the night as normal and will be uploaded to EcatsBridge and thenalso to our own website but not before 10:00 pm on that day.

Simultaneous Pairs - Tuesday, 26 June 2018

This is just a reminder that next week, Tuesday 26 June 2018, it will be the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs event.  There is still time to put your names down to take part.  The table fee for the event is £5 for Members and £6 for Non Members.  The evening will be run exactly as we always run it and our Club's own result will be announced as usual after play.  At the same time you should receive a printout of the hands commentary document. Please ask Graham or Roger if you are not automatically given one.  The results will then be uploaded to ECatsBridge and amalgamated with all the results from other Clubs worldwide which may results in positions changing. The Club results will not be published on our own website until the Sunday after the event because some clubs may be playing the event on a different day. You will be able to track the results as they change by visiting the EcatsBridge website.

I am going to be away and the event will be run by Graham and Roger.  Please, please take extra special care to check at the start of each hand that the right boards are on the table the correct way round and that you have the right number of cards.  Check again as you finish each hand and return your cards to the boards.  Everyone is equally responsible for making sure it is done right.  We seem to repeatedly have problems that lead to late adjustments to our weekly results.

Enjoy!

Bridge Solver Online

For those of you who like to spend time analysing your results (and those of us who really ought to!), have you noticed that in addition to the information and personal scorecards produced automatically when results are uploaded to the website, there is a little button on the results page for each Duplicate Pairs event. It looks like a graph and has the letters BSOL below it.  This takes you into Bridge Solver Online which is integrated with Bridgewebs. For each event, this link enables you to get more analysis on how you and your partner do when declaring or defending. It also gives you the opportunity to replay the hands so that you can work out where you were going wrong if you did not arrive at and achieve the optimum contract. This could and probably should take over my life.

Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 20 January 2018

Eight pairs competed on Tuesday, 20 February, aiming to play twenty-eight boards over seven rounds. Board 22 was Passed Out on all occasions it was due to be played and Board 28 was Not Played on one occasion due to running out of time. Board 9 was accidentally Passed Out by a player not concentrating who was holding a hand of eighteen points, naming no names but I was not best pleased with partner!

Only one pair, MargaretM & LindaM, bid and made a Small Slam. This was 6 on Board 25. On all other occasions that board was played, Declarer was in a 5  contract but made either twelve or thirteen tricks. Unbid Small Slams were also made by some Declarers on boards 10 and 11.

The X double card was used to good effect on six occasions, with all the doubled contracts being brought down.

Top pair for the evening were SheilaW & Pat with 57.23%. Second were DaveH & DaveW with 56.02%.  Third were Clinton & Babs with 54.22%.

At this very early stage in the season no pairs have competed in the ten events required to qualify for a final result in the series. Of the pairs who play regularly at Dounby, the way is being led by DaveH & DaveW with an average of 58.51%, followed by SheilaW & Pat with 55.89% and Dennis & Roger with 53.97%. The highest single evening score of the year to date is 65.42%, achieved by Graham & SheilaL.

Norvite Simultaneous Bridge Tournament

Dounby will again be taking part in the Norvite Simultaneous Bridge Competition, with play at Dounby being on Tuesday, 16 January. This is organised by the SBU North District but is open to non SBU clubs.  The table fee, including the normal Dounby fee, will be £5 for Members and £6 for Non Members.

If you wish to take part in this competition, will one of your pairing please enter your names on the booking page. For this particular event we need to have full tables of players so it is important that we know who wants to play as early as possible and can make sure we have the right numbers. When booking, please do not worry if it looks as though entering your names will result in a half table, we have contingency plans for that.

The movement will be a Mitchell movement and scoring will be aggregate.  There are prizes overall for each N-S and E-W player for the top three pairs for each direction in the overall competition - 1st £35, 2nd £25 and 3rd £15 - as well as for organiser-selected board results - 1st £25 and 2nd £15. There are no Club level prizes.

2018 Subscriptions

Subscriptions are now due for the 2018 season. The Committee has decided to hold the annual fee at £5 and the table fees at £2 for Members and £3 for Non Members for the time being subject to these being ratified at the AGM which will probably be in late February.  Special table fee rates apply to simultaneous pairs events that happen three or four times a year. Usually these will be £5 for Members and £6 for Non Members.

We invite members to pay their annual fee when they first come along to play in 2018.

Festive Season Dates

Please note that the dates for the end of the Individual Rubber Bridge and Duplicate Pairs Series and the start of the new season will be as follows:

Friday, 15 December 2017 - Final Individual Rubber Bridge
Tuesday, 19 December 2017 - Final Duplicate Pairs

Friday, 5 January 2018 - First Individual Rubber Bridge - with food (see below)
Tuesday, 9 January 2018 - First Duplicate Pairs

There are still a few weeks to go so there is time for challenges to be made to the current series leaders.

We have not yet decided whether the trophies will be given out at the end of the series or at the start of the new season and that may depend on who is around when.  Please note, however, that to keep costs down we will only be awarding trophies this year and not any additional consumable prizes.

The first Friday of the new year will also be a small celebration to welcome the start of the new season.  If you come along to play that evening please bring something to contribute to the finger buffet. Be restrained as to quantity though so that we don't end up with too many leftovers.

Children in Need - Simultaneous Pairs 14 November 2017

Many thanks to all who supported the Club participation in the Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs event yesterday evening.  There was an initial hitch with uploading the Club results to Ecats but that has been sorted out now.  As mentioned previously, we cannot upload the results to our website until after all the results are in and processed which means after Saturday.  In the meantime you can look at the combined rankings, which change as more results are processed, by clicking on this link .

Well done to DaveH & DaveW for coming top locally and to Maggie & Tina for being runners up.  You can view the Club rankings via the Ecats link by selecting Club in the RH column on the page on Ecats site.

Children in Need - Simultaneous Pairs

Dounby Bridge Club is going to take part in the annual Children In Need Simultaneous Competition again this year.  The date will be Tuesday, 14 November 2017 and on that evening the total charge for Members will be £5 per person and for Non Members will be £6 per person.  This will enable us to meet our room hire costs as normal and pay the entry fee for the competition.

There will be a possible 30 boards to play but the number we play will depend on how many pairs take part at Dounby and the Movement used.  For the competition I understand that only 24 boards will count as different clubs have different numbers of tables playing.

The results for the evening within the Club will be announced at the end of play as usual and the results will be uploaded to Ecats to be amalgamated with the other club results.  We will not be able to upload the results to our own website until after all clubs have played and submitted their results.  This is usually by the following Saturday or Sunday. You will be given a booklet at the end of the evening with commentary on the hands. Please remember that when the results are amalgamated with other club results your position relative to other Dounby members may differ from your position at Dounby on the night.  To keep costs down, there will be no prize to the winning pair at Dounby on the night so you will be playing just for honour not reward. I understand that the highest placed pair in the overall results will get a certificate to mark their effort.

The results from Dounby on the night will also be part of our normal Duplicate Pairs series.

If you intend to take part in this Simultaneous Pairs competition it would be helpful for planning purposes if one of your pair would please enter you on the booking page on the website as soon as possible.  Thank you.

FRIDAY, 6 OCTOBER - BRIDGE BACK ON

We are delighted to say that Rubber Bridge is back on for Friday, 6 October but will be held in a room at the Smithfield Hotel instead of at the Dounby Centre. We hope to see as many of you as possible there as usual.

For anyone travelling out from Kirkwall who may not know where the Smithfield Hotel is, coming from Kirkwall drive straight past the Dounby Centre to the first crossroads. The Smithfield Hotel is on that junction. Turn right and either park immediately behind the hotel or in the car park on the right. Please turn up at the usual time and you will be directed to the room we are using.

There will be a further bulletin about next Tuesday bridge when we know more on Monday.

DOUNBY BRIDGE CANCELLED TONIGHT - 3 OCTOBER 2017

Please note that there will be no bridge at the Dounby Bridge Club tonight, Tuesday 3 October 2017, owing to the roof of the Dounby Centre being damaged by the gales. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Unless you hear to the contrary, we are expecting bridge to go ahead as normal on Friday, 6 October 2017.

BRIDGE CANCELLED - UPDATE

Further to the earlier posting on this site to say that bridge tonight has had to be cancelled due to damage to the Dounby Centre roof, a further call from the Centre Manager has informed us that the Dounby Centre is to be closed all week.  This means that there will be no Rubber Bridge on Friday either.  We apologise for the inconvenience and hope that things will be back to normal by next week.

Individual Rubber Bridge Friday, 1st September 2017

Only seven players tonight.   A few hands made 12 and 13 tricks but no slams bid. Graham was top with 5330, Sheila  second with 3860 and Ally third with 3840.  All three drop a poorer score tonight and Ally moves up one place to 11th.  With two - thirds of the year gone, the top 3 places  remain the same with Margaret having 51100, Graham now only 1500 behind with 49600 and Linda M with 47410 - all still to play for. Thanks to Glad and Sheila for the tasty homebakes.     Roger will update scores in due course.

Simultaneous Pairs

Back in June the Club took part in the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs event.  The winners on the night at Dounby were Bob and Linda Ross who each won a bottle of wine. After results from all Clubs were submitted to Ecats and frequencies and final scores on individual boards had been processed, it was DaveH & Dennis who were highest placed in the overall Simultaneous Pairs competition with a final score of 57.54%.  This ranked them 156th overall. For being the top Dounby pair in the overall results they were presented with a small trophy, a pen and a cheque for £14 each.Congratulations to you both.  Bob & Linda's final score was 56.76%. The full final results can be viewed on the ECats website.

Simultaneous Pairs Update

As you can see from earlier reports, Linda & Bob Ross did well in the Simultaneous Pairs competition at Club level. At Dounby we played 27 boards but some other Clubs will have played a different number of boards, provided that they played at least the minimum number of 24 boards. This means that when the results are pooled at Ecats to find National, Zonal and Worldwide, the relative positions of pair results can be different as has turned out to be the case. Most of the results from other clubs are in now but even as I was typing the report for the Orcadian a few minutes ago the positions were changing and that may happen again.

Highest ranking were DaveW & Dennis who were lying 20th in Scotland with 57.56%. At Zone 1 level they were lying 106th and at Worldwide level they were lying 147th.

Second highest were LindaR & Bob who were lying 23rd in Scotland with 56.83%. At Zone 1 level they were lying 120th and at Worldwide level they were lying 169th.

Third highest were DaveH & Sandy who were lying 29th in Scotland with 54.28%. At Zone 1 level they were lying 175th and at Worldwide level they were lying 200th.

In the Club year to date rankings, based on the average of the best ten scores achieved for those who have completed on ten or more occasions, the lead continues to be held by Dennis & Roger with an average of 60.68%. Lying second are DaveH & DaveW with an average of 58.87% and lying third are LindaM & MargaretM with an average of 58.06%.

Simultaneous Pairs - Tuesday, 27 June 2017

Many thanks to all who took part in the Simultaneous Pairs competition this evening.  At Club level, the top pair were LindaR & Bob who were rewarded with a couple of bottles of wine. LindaM & MargaretM were second and in joint third place were DaveH & Sandy and Graham & SheilaL. Well done all.

The results have been uploaded to ECats and, as I warned, when amalgamated with other results the positions of our pairs can change relative to each other. Even with just a few results up on the Ecats site this is already proving to be the case and it is DaveW & Dennis who are currently lying highest up the rankings so well done to them too. Whether that will remain the case as more results are uploaded we will have to wait and see.  Click here to visit the Ecats site.  Nothing will appear on our own website for the Club results before Sunday, 2 July.

This is just a quick reminder that the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs competition will take place on Tuesday, 27 June. If you wish to take part, please be sure to enter your pair on the Find a Partner page or contact Iso Tipler to make your booking, as soon as possible.  Instead of the normal fee, the table fee for that event will be £5 for members or £6 for non members.

Simultaneous Pairs - Tuesday, 27 June

At the AGM we promised to consult with players before deciding whether or not to take part in simultaneous pairs competitions and also to indicate the total amount that will be charged if we do decide to take part.

The first situation has arisen in relation to the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs competition which is on 27 June 2017. The regular Duplicate Pairs players who were present on Tuesday, 21 March - which was the majority of the regulars, though one or two were not present - were asked if they wished to take part and, if so, if they were willing to pay a total table fee, inclusive of the normal room rate, of £5 for members (£6 for non members). There was unanimous agreement to participate on that basis and the invitation to take part has therefore been accepted.

If you intend to take part in that event, would one of your pairing for that evening please register for the event on the Find A Partner page as early as possible as we need to give numbers to the organisers in order to get the necessary copies of the hand commentaries that are handed out after the event.

Norvite Results

Although there are still some results to come in, the current leaderboard can now be seen on the SBU North website.

As things stand at the moment, Dave Higgins & Davie Aim are leading for the East/West and are lying seventh for the selected boards. Malcolm & Iso Tipler are lying second for the North/South selected boards.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 27 January 2017

Average scores for Individual Rubber Bridge were low again, with only just half the players clearing 3,000, but the spread was greater this week with three scores which will probably still count at the season’s end: Roger led with 4,880, Dennis was second on 4,800 and Graham third scoring 4,750 – there was then a gap of over 1,000 to the next player. Most striking hand of the night was probably Roger’s in partnership with Graham: he picked up AKQ10xxx of Clubs, AKx of Diamonds and a doubleton and a singleton in the majors: Graham had AQxxx or longer in both majors. 6NT made with an overtrick as the two major suit Kings were onside.

Roger currently leads with 13,120; Graham is next with 11,300 and Malcolm third with 11,250. Very early days: probably no more than seven scores will still be counting in folk’s ‘best ten’ by December.

End of 2016 season and start of 2017 season

The dates for the end of the 2016 season for Duplicate Pairs and Individual Rubber Bridge are given below along with the dates for the start of the 2017 season.

End of 2016 season
Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 13 December 2016
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 16 December 2016

Start of 2017 season
Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 10 January 2017
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 13 January 2017 (with food)

The trophies for the 2016 season will be given out at the first session of the 2017 season for each competition respectively, not both on the same evening as previously.

The first Individual Rubber Bridge evening will include a finger buffet to which those attending are invited to bring along an item of food to contribute. It would be a bit much to have food on the Tuesday and the Friday and we have chosen to do it on the Friday as that is generally a more relaxed evening. Tuesday only players are, of course, more than welcome to come along on the Friday. Individual players are easy to accommodate on Fridays.

Simultaneous Pairs - 17 January 2017

The Club will be taking part in the Norvite Simultaneous Pairs competition on Tuesday, 17 January 2017. This is not a charity event. The competition is being organised by Anne Coles of the North District of the Scottish Bridge Union but we do not have to be SBU members to take part. If Dounby pairs are interested in taking part please be sure to put your names up on the event calendar on the Dounby Bridge Club website as soon as possible. We are not able to have half tables so need a bit of extra time to make sure that we can fill enough tables for all who want to play.

The movement will be a Mitchell movement and exactly how that will work will depend on how many tables we have. The competition is based on 24 pre-set hands and Aggregate Scoring will be used. We may find we need to add a few extra boards to ensure equal play but the extra boards will not feature as part of the results.   The results for this competition will be assessed across all the competitors and not at Club level.  When all the results are in, the outcome will be posted on the North District website at www.sbunorth.co.uk under Results -> Norvite .

We will not be able to post our results on the Dounby Bridge Club website until all the other competing clubs in the simultaneous pairs competition have uploaded their results. We are playing a day earlier than the main date for the event so it is important to retain confidentiality. You will be given notes on the hands after play has been completed.

Norvite Simultaneous Bridge Tournament

Many thanks to those who took part on Tuesday evening in the Norvite Simultaneous Bridge Tournament organised by the SBU North District. It was good to be able to field five tables for the event.

The scoring for the event was Aggregate and on the evening we treated this as a straightforward local event to produce North/South and East/West winners based on the full 25 boards played and without score limitations. The North/South winning pair were Iso & Malcolm Tipler and the East/West winning pair were Dave Higgins & Davie Aim. Our local results will be posted once the other Clubs have played and submitted their results. Notes on the hands were given out after the event.

The Norvite competition itself was based on only the first 24 boards and for the purposes of their results the 25th board is omitted and certain scoring limitations are applied. This is all done at SBU North District following submission of the results file produced by Scorebridge.  The final outcome may look quite different from what we showed locally, once the limitations have been applied.

The scoring limitations are summarised below:

Slam Contracts, made or defeated - No limit

Defeated Contracts - Declarer loses full score, Defenders are limited to 700 if non vulnerable and to 900 if vulnerable

Contracts Made - Defenders lose full score, Declarer is limited to 800 if non vulnerable and 1000 if vulnerable

To view the overall results once all the information from all the clubs has been collated and processed, please visit the SBU North District website www.sbunorth.co.uk and look under Results>Norvite.  At the time of this post there are no results up.

Prizes

The Norvite prizes are at overall level only, not at club level and will be as follows:

Overall
1st N/S and E/W - £35
2nd N/S and E/W - £25
3rd N/S and E/W - £15

Selected Boards
1st N/S and E/W - £25
2nd N/S and E/W - £15

The selected board numbers for N/S were 1, 4, 9, 13, 17, 18, 22, 24.
The selected board numbers for E/W were 7, 8, 12, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23

2017 Season Start

The first Friday of the 2017 season was a relaxed start to the Individual Rubber Bridge competition with a buffet and prizes for each round and overall.

The overall winner for the evening was Malcolm Tipler with a score of 5230 points. We are allowing him to enjoy the moment, and the chocolates, in the knowledge that it is early days in the season and his rule at the top, and the chocolates, may not last long.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 20 January 2017

Statistically, average scores and their spread were curiously similar to the first week of the season, despite the generosity of occasional doublers! – at least two redoubled contracts made with overtricks. This week’s leader was Pat Shearer, building on her third place previously, with 5,210 points; second with 4,670 was Margaret Mainland; and third Graham Lyon with 4,050. Thus Pat takes the lead with 9,260; next is Roger Davies on 8,240; and third is Malcolm Tipler at 7,920.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 25 November 2016

With just ten folk for Individual Rubber Bridge at Dounby on the Friday, we played across three tables with plenty of exercise for dummies bidding at other tables! Four players improved their ‘best ten’ aggregates, most dramatically the first three on the night, all scoring above 5,000: Glad Marwick led the way with 5,720 points to take her into ninth spot overall, partly based on a remarkable hand where she held 31 High Card Points; Graham Lyon was second with 5,420 points, stretching his lead by 610; and all the way from Spain to take third place came Malcolm Tipler (5,090), taking him into seventh place. Graham now has 54,870 points; Clinton Rendall has 54,060; and some distance behind them in third spot, Roger Davies has 51,220.

Last updated : 2nd Dec 2016 23:55 GMT

Tuesday night’s Duplicate Pairs Bridge in Dounby saw eight pairs competing, in two competitions at once: with performances measured as usual against the other pairs present, but also on a national stage, in a Simultaneous Pairs competition organised by Anna Gudge and Mark Newton of Voy and with the results of 1,468 pairs uploaded as these notes are written!

The ‘batting order’ that emerges locally will not necessarily match the national pattern, as some ‘tops’ – and indeed some ‘bottoms’! – locally may be either very impressive or quite ordinary performances in the wider context! Thus local winners on the night, within our weekly competition, were Dennis Paice and Roger Davies, with 63.1% (but this became 56.8% against the wider field), closely followed by Dave Higgins and Dave Walker (62.5% locally, but holding up rather better against a national field, at 59.7%; their defence in taking opponents 4 off on Board 15 for 200 points looks particularly good nationally, almost an outright top across the country), and with Sheila Walls and Pat Shearer (57.1% or 56.6%) third.

The event was organised to support Children in Need, and with entry fees and raffle proceeds we were very pleased to raise £157, almost £10 apiece – many thanks to everyone for their generosity, and to all involved in the organisation. We were all issued with booklets commenting on each hand – as Dennis said, to show us what we should have done! – and this should be a worthwhile learning experience. To see more information on the hands and the national results visit http://www.simpairs.com/default.asp?session=005357

Returning to the local context, the results served to consolidate leading positions: Dave and Dave lead with a surely unassailable 66.52%; Dennis and Roger are second with 62.45%; and third are Linda Milne and Margaret Mainland on 61.29%. With Graham and Sheila Lyon having 61.14%, and Sheila Walls and Pat 60.06%, there is plenty to play for below top spot over the remaining four weeks!

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 11 November 2016

A fortnight ago the Friday night Individual Rubber Bridge players in Dounby ‘enjoyed’ the lowest average score of the year (2,845 points per player); this week the average reached 4,314, the highest since August 2015. Runaway leader Linda Milne, at last with a Friday score to match her recent strong Pairs performances, ran up the best total at the Club this year, a massive 7,160 points, with Graham Lyon (5,190) and Margaret Kirkness (5,090) second and third.

In some ways the greatest drama of the night came on the last table, with echoes of a last table in December last year, with Clinton Rendall making a score which would change who led in the annual competition. Now Clinton, coming to the evening in first place, was in partnership with second-placed Graham, and realising that opponents had over-reached themselves Clinton reached for his Doubling card: 3 off, vulnerable, 800 points apiece rather than 300 had it not been doubled. The points mattered not to Clinton, his final score not coming within his ten best – but for Graham it was crucial: with a tenth best score of 4,690 to replace, he would by coincidence have scored exactly that without the double and hence not changed his season’s aggregate; but the double moved him up 500 points. Thus, from lying 300 points adrift of Clinton when the evening began, he finished the night 200 ahead – thanks to Clinton’s generosity! Now Graham leads with 54,260 points; Clinton has 54,060; there is then a substantial gap to Roger Davies on 51,010. Linda’s excellent score moved her up two places, to sixth overall with an aggregate of 48,860.

If anyone would like to donate a prize for the raffle that would be very welcome. Donated prizes can be handed to Roger or Margaret on any Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday evening prior to the event.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 21 October 2016

With twelve folk present again, making for a comfortable three tables, the clear winner tonight was Hazel Foubister, her total of 5,440 largely gained on two excellent early tables: 2,200 with Gladys Marwick and 1,040 with Graham Lyon. Glad did indeed sustain a good standard across the evening to finish second with 4,840, and third was Margaret Kirkness on 4,430. For each of these and for fourth placed Pat Shearer (4,330) their scores were good enough to increase their ‘best ten’ aggregates for the season, Glad and Hazel each moving up a spot in the overall rankings.

Overall, Clinton Rendall still leads, with 54,060; Graham is second, on 53,760; and well back in third on 51,010 is Roger Davies.

Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs - Club Winners

The club level winning pair at Dounby for the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs event held in June were Michael King and Leslie Manson. They were recently awarded their prizes of a small shield, pen and cheque from the organisers. When the final results were known the pair came 7th in Scotland, 31st in Zone 1 and 46th overall out of a total of 962 pairs. A great result. Well done.

Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 23 August 2016

Five and a half tables for Duplicate Pairs this week so a six table movement was used for 9 rounds of 3 boards per round. This meant that in addition to the sit out table, two other tables had sitting pairs for the night. The distribution of points should have been evenly spread N/S and E/W over the course of the evening but one of the sitting pairs was fairly fed up with a run of poor cards though some better cards did come through later in the evening.

Four Small Slams were bid and made. Three of these were on board 22 where 6 made 13 tricks in all three cases, by MargaretM & LindaM, DaveH & DaveW and Iso & Malcolm. In fact 13 tricks were made every time the board was played but in two cases bidding stopped below slam level. The fourth Small Slam was on board 24 where 6♠ by George & Ally made exactly.

Top equal for the evening were MargaretM & LindaM and Iso & Malcolm with 57.29%. For MargaretM & LindaM this just meant they could drop their lowest score but for Iso & Malcolm, also dropping their lowest score, this equalled their highest score of the season. In equal third place for the evening were DaveH & DaveW and SheilaW & Pat with 53.65%

In the case of MargaretM & LindaM, top spot is familiar territory but Iso & Malcolm rarely make it to such dizzy heights. Iso & Malcolm would like to be able to attribute their result this week to finally playing better but they have a sneaking suspicion that it might have rather more to do with them not having played against the two of the three leading pairs in the series, DaveH & DaveW and SheilaW & Pat. Those pairs may be regretting they didn't get the chance to improve their results by playing them.

There was no change in the year to date rankings with DaveJ & DaveW remaining on an average of 62.69%, Graham & SheilaL remaining on 59.80% and SheilaW & Pat remaining on 59.51%.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 12 August 2016

Last week's 'season's best' turnout was overtaken this week with eighteen players joining in to play Individual Rubber Bridge.

There were a large number of relatively low scores this evening but three players achieved scores of 4000 points or over. Winner by a significant margin with 4790 points was SheenaH. 650 points behind her on 4140 points was Malcolm and then Iso was not far behind with exactly 4000 points.

Leader in the rankings continues to be Clinton with 51060 points. Iris lies in second place with 48880 points but is closely followed by Graham with 48870 points. They will be hoping to take advantage of any absences by Clinton to close the gap but they will have their work cut out to achieve that. Roger and Dennis also have points over 48000 but there is then a gap down to Malcolm and MargaretM in the 45000s. Further down the rankings there were two or three minor place movements.

Duplicate Pairs - 9 August 2016

DaveW & DaveH are clearly not going to rest on their laurels having banked ten scores in the series and immediately shot into first place. This week they managed a score of 70.83%, the second highest of their campaign, enabling them to drop one of the their (relatively) low scores and giving them a qualifying average of 62.41%. The next best average is 59.80%, held by Graham & SheilaL followed by Pat & SheilaW with 59.51%.

This week the next best pairs on the evening, Roger & Dennis and MargaretM & LindaM achieved percentages of 57.14% and 51.79% respectively. They were also two of the three pairs to bid and make Small Slams. The third pairing achieving that was Graham & SheilaL.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 29 July 2016

Well done Sheena!

As in the previous week, fourteen folk played Individual Rubber Bridge at the Dounby Centre on the Friday; and, as on Tuesday, results at the top were tightly bunched, with half the field scoring between 4,620 and 4,010. ‘Top of the shop’, though, with a personal best total of 4,620 points including a personal best table score of 1,410, came Sheena Hay. Second was Linda Milne (4,430) and third was Pat Shearer (4,340).

Sheena is still compiling her ten scores for the year and did not overtake anyone, but both Linda (now 8th) and Pat (now 11th) moved up a spot in the annual competition. Clinton Rendall (49,670) remains in the lead, with Iris Clyde (48,880) second and Dennis Paice (48,190) third.

Competition table now amended - RD

Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs - 28 June 2016

Many thanks to the 24 players who came along on Tuesday, 28 June to play in the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs Competition.  We are not able to post our results on our own website until after Saturday because other clubs may be playing the same hands on other days. The results from Dounby have, however, been uploaded to Ecats and you can view the results Overall, Zonally, by Country and by Club by using the links on their website. The link for the relevant part of their website is:

Ecats Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs Results 2016

Please note that the Club result finishing order for pairs is not always the finishing order that applies once the Club results are amalgamated into the overall results. This is because different Clubs play different numbers of boards from 18 to 30 and much depends on the frequency a board has been played and how players performed on each board.

Finishing top at Dounby were Michael King & Leslie Manson with 60.47%. At the time of writing they were lying 7th in Scotland, 17th in Zone 1 and 21st Overall.

In second place at Dounby were Sheila Walls & Pat Shearer, very close behind with 60.08%. At the time of writing they were lying 15th in Scotland, 49th in Zone 1 and 68th overall.

In third place at Dounby were Jim Burgher & Clinton Rendall with 59.02%. In the Ecats results they now appear as the second of our pairs in the full results, lying 10th in Scotland, 35th in Zone 1 and 52nd Overall.

Well done to all these pairs but remember that in the full competition the positions and percentages will be constantly changing until the final results are posted by the end of the week.

Humble apologies!  At the end of the evening I should have handed out the post event booklets with the hands and commentary on the contracts.  I will scan a copy to email out to everyone, probably later today, but will also have hard copies available on Friday of this week and Tuesday of next week for those who competed and want to have a hard copy.

Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs - 28 June

At the AGM on 25 March, members were asked if they were interested in taking part in the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs event again this year and there was sufficient interest for a decision to be made to go ahead. The event this year will be on Tuesday, 28 June so if you are interested in taking part in that duplicate pairs competition, please put the date in your diary and also would one of your partnership please go to the event booking part of this site and put your names down as soon as possible. We will be able to cater for people right up to the last minute but to make sure that enough copies of the post event commentary are made available it is helpful to know numbers in advance.

We would be happy to welcome visitors too, so if you know of other pairs who might like to compete but are not regular players at Dounby, then please pass the information on to them. For them it may be a case of Iso booking them onto the system if they are not already on it.

Normal Dounby table money will be charged on the night (£2 for members and £3 for non members) and the club will pay over the total due for our participation in the event.

Our local results will be included in our Duplicate Pairs competition and will also be uploaded to Ecats so that we can see how we did in the overall competition in relation to other competitors in our region, nationally and globally.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 6 May 2016

Friday’s Individual Rubber Bridge proved a good evening for those who had enjoyed success lately: in first place, with 5,260 points, was Margaret Mainland, winner for the second week running, and second with 4,720 points came Sheila Lyon, who had led the field the previous week. Sheila’s score was all the remarkable in that all but 700 of it came from three tables, with two slams near the end of the evening – the latter courtesy of Gladys Marwick, bidding very competitively with an 8-card Club suit and pushing Sheila and her partner into a successful Six Diamonds! Clinton Rendall came third on the evening, scoring 4,620 points.

It was an enjoyable and well attended evening, with 16 players and hence no running round for dummies to bid, nor anyone sitting out, and a particular welcome was extended to Ruth Sinclair, joining us on a Friday for the first time in 2016.

Top spot in the 2016 competition changed hands, as Clinton’s best ten scores now total 45,680; Graham Lyon’s score is unchanged this week on 44,850, with Margaret closing the gap with her aggregate of 44,080. This close bunching extends some way with eight players now totalling over 40,000, Malcolm Tipler being the latest to join this group.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 22 April 2016

With eleven players present and scores averaging almost as low as any evening this year, there were no major changes in position. Winner was Sheila with 4,300, next Clinton (3,790) and third Dennis (3,710). Clinton remains in the lead with his margin over Graham just slightly increased, Dennis moving closer to both.

Annual General Meeting

Many thanks to those who attended the Annual General Meeting on Friday, 25 March. The minutes are being prepared and will be circulated to members shortly. This is just a quick reminder to those who were members last year and therefore on the distribution list for the AGM, but have not paid membership fees for 2016 yet, that the circulation list is being updated and the minutes will be sent out only to members.

Annual General Meeting - Friday, 20 February 2015

This is a reminder that the Annual General Meeting will be held at 6:50 pm, immediately before bridge, on Friday, 25 March. The meeting papers will be emailed out after bridge on Friday, 18 March. The intention is to keep the meeting as short as possible.

The current committee members all reach the end of their terms of office but have offered themselves for re-election to the same roles. That is not to say that others may not also put their names forward. If any other member does wish to stand they should request a nomination form from Iso Tipler and arrange for it to be completed by the candidate, a proposer and a seconder and returned to Iso Tipler by 7:00 pm on Friday, 18 March.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 5 February 2016

Thirteen folk gathered at the Dounby Centre for Individual Rubber Bridge on Friday 5 February - the show of hands just favouring the energetic approach of spreading ourselves over 4 tables rather than taking turns to sit out! That meant plenty of bidding practice and some excitement over redoubles, for example at the very last table when Malcolm Tipler made a redoubled contract to help him to his best score of the season. Enjoying her return to form and top for the second week running was Linda Milne with 5,600 points, with Clinton Rendall second on 5,410 and Malcolm third on 4,910. Dennis Paice and Gladys Marwick also exceeded the 4,750 mark.

After five weeks' play, Clinton returns to the lead with a total of 22,040; Margaret Mainland is second with 21,240 and Dennis, also averaging over 4,000 for the season, lies third on 20,370 points. Of those with only four evenings behind them, Linda leads the way with an aggregate 16,640 points.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 11 December

How dramatic was that...!

On the very last hand of the season, Iris Clyde made Six Clubs (with an overtrick), sufficent to raise her own score a little but contributing to a massive evening for her partner Clinton Rendall, who at that very last moment leapt past Iris into first place for the year and is thus our Champion for 2015! Congratulations to him, to Iris for coming second and to Graham for coming third, and warmest thanks to everyone who has played or helped this year.

Missing from Duplicate Pairs on Tuesday, 15 December were Graham & SheilaL so the opportunity was taken at Individual Rubber Bridge on Friday to present them with their Duplicate Pairs Runners Up trophies.

Congratulations to you both and welcome back, Graham.

After being concerned that we might need to cancel the final evening of rubber bridge due to lack of players, we managed to rustle up twelve people who had a very relaxed evening just playing bridge and munching on the goodies that a few a brought in, thank you. This evening was not part of a series so the individual scores for the evening are given below. Well done to Graham for celebrating his return with another win.

Graham 5910 points, Pat 4660, Clinton 4800, LindaM 3910, DaveW 3670,MargaretK 3590, Hazel 3520, Glad 2960,SheenaH 2560, SheilaL 2530, Iris 2120, Iso 2090.

Children in Need - Funds Raised

Many thanks to those who took part in or otherwise supported the Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs event. A cheque for £227 has been forwarded to EcatsBridge to be added to the total they are accumulating to pay over to Children in Need. That amount was made up of:

£66 - Tables fees for 11 pairs
£125 - Raised by the raffle
£36 - Raised by sale of Jean's Millionaire Shortbread and other miscellaneous donations

A running total of what has been raised through Ecats this year can be found on the Ecats site by following this link. Our amount has not been listed yet but I have emailed Ecats to let them know what has been raised so hopefully it will appear shortly. They are hoping to top last year's total of over £70,000.

The Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs results were uploaded last night. Click on the link below to go to the results page for the Tuesday group of playing clubs:

Children-in-Need Results

The page opens with the leading fifteen players overall but on the righthand side of the page you can follow links to show results for Club, National and Zone levels. At the time of writing this note, Mike and Davie are lying 2nd in Scotland and 28th overall. Well done guys. Please bear in mind that the percentages and placings will continue to change until the final results are in.

I will be taking the booklets for post event distribution to Kirkwall tonight to give them out to some folk. Roger will give the rest out on Friday, if possible.

Children in Need - Simultaneous Pairs 10 November 2015

The Club intends to take part in a Simultaneous Pairs competition to be held on Tuesday, 10 November 2015 to raise money for Children in Need. We hope as many of our regular players as possible will come along to compete and that we might manage to rustle up a few extra pairs for the event. As well as sending our results through to ECATS, the results will count towards our normal Duplicate Pairs competition.

We will charge our normal table fees to players but the Club will then pay over the entry fee due to the organisers and meet the costs of booklets for issue after the event. In addition, we plan to hold a raffle on the evening to raise additional money to pay over to the organisers to pass on to Children in Need. Last time the event was run it raised a very substantial sum for the cause we are told.

We will be very pleased to receive any donations of items to go into the raffle, preferably in advance of the event date. Please bring any contribution along on any bridge night between now and then and it will be kept safe for the event. Thank you.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 30 October

Well done to Ann Edwards who comfortably led the way, first with 4,980 points, followed at a distance by Linda (3,980) and Pat (3,930). Of those who had completed ten scores, only Iso improved hers, and that by not enough to move up.

Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 29 September

After a delayed start due to a problem with Bridgepads after upgrading the laptop to Windows 10, play got underway with four tables playing 28 boards and a combined total of 112 contracts. Unfortunately, the problem meant that we had to revert to manual travellers.  UPDATE: Thanks to advice from Davie at Orkney Bridge Club, the Bridgepads are now up and running again but in Windows 7 Emulation mode, so all should be well on Tuesday.

There was not a lot of excitement to be gleaned from the hands. No Grand or Small Slams were bid but DaveH & Sheena did manage to make twelve tricks on board 2. Only one contract was doubled, successfully, by Graham & SheilaL against Margaret & Ruth on board 8.

There were 39 game contracts bid, 21 of them in No Trump. Of the 39 contracts, 14 went down and 10 of those were 3NT contracts. Of the remaining 25 game contracts, 10 made exactly and 15 were made with overtricks.

More by luck than anything else, the top pair for the evening were Iso & Malcolm with 57.74%. In equal second place were Graham & SheilaL and DaveW & Dennis both with 54.17%.

In the year to date rankings, Pat & SheilaW lead with an average of 61.55% for their best ten scores. In second place lie Dennis & Roger with 61.23% and in third place Graham & SheilaL with 60.91% - so very little separates these three pairs. Behind these pairs, relative positions from fourth to sixth place remain unchanged but this week's result saw Iso & Malcolm overtake Margaret & Marjory to move into seventh place.

Duplicate Pairs - 1 September - Correction

The results that were announced after bridge on 1 September were incorrect as it was discovered afterwards that there was a mismatch between the Table Cards movements and the Bridgepad movements although the starting positions were exactly the same. This only affected tables 2 and 3 where there were pairs sitting at the same table all evening but switching direction in certain rounds as per the Table Cards. Unfortunately, the Bridgepad movement set up was one that had them sitting in the same place all evening without switching. The corrected results reflect the actual movement that took place at the tables. This had a significant impact on the overall results and positions for the evening.

A further complication was that boards 11 and 12 played by pairs 3 and 1 in round 8 and by pairs 8 and 5 in round 9 had been rotated 180 degrees so that north was playing south's hand and east was playing west's hand. The contract direction (ie N/S or E/W) and outcome in terms of score is not affected but I have amended the declarer's position so that it ties in correctly with the lead card position.

I hope that everything now reflects the correct results and placings but if you do spot anything else please let me know.

Iso

There had been eleven pairs on the evening, most fairly tightly bunched in percentage scores but with the field led by Margaret Mainland & Marjory Cook (61.6%), ahead of Graham & Sheila Lyon (58.9%) and Sheila Walls & Pat Shearer (56.8%). Board 25 saw slams bid and made at four of the five tables, the highlight being Sheila & Pat’s Grand Slam; 13 tricks were taken on every occasion. Occasional other boards saw 12 tricks being made, Dennis Paice being the successful declarer twice.

There was only the most minute adjustment to the leader board: Dennis & Roger (61.2%) remain in front, with Pat & Sheila (60.9%) second and Graham & Sheila (60.7%) fractionally closer in third.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 28 August

Seventeen players meant five tables, with three dummies needed to bid, so we were all kept busy! Welcome back Ally, not seen since March - where did the summer go?

Ally indeed scored well, coming second with 5,330, still building her '10 best scores' so not changing position. Behind her came Sheila with 5,040, enough to take her up one place, but the star of the evening was Graham, who came needing 5,820 to catch Clinton but exceeded that by 350, taking first place on the night indeed but more significantly establishing himself again at the top of the annual rankings!

Last updated : 4th Sep 2015 23:13 GMT
Duplicate Pairs, Tuesday 11 August

Tuesday, 11 August saw steadily growing numbers as 7pm approached – what looked like 4 tables becoming 4½, then 5, then 5½ and finally 6, leaving the temporary organiser a little perplexed! All went well though, and despite most pairs being bunched together one pair – the occasional grouping of Margaret Mainland & Dave Walker – led the field by 6 percentage points, scoring just over 62%. A dozen match points back (57%) came Sheila & Graham Lyon, and one match point behind them were two pairs: Shelley Bell & Peter Bishop and Dave Higgins & Sheena Hay.

The annual competition is based on a pair’s best ten scores: others will be relieved that Margaret & Dave have played together only four times, so they do not yet qualify! Graham & Sheila did not quite score enough to change things and remain second, with an overall 60.6%, still a little adrift of Dennis Paice & Roger Davies (61.2%). Third remain David Toms and Dave Walker (60.3%).

Last updated : 25th Aug 2015 14:32 GMT
Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 31 July

Of the season's top-ranked 16 players, 14 made up Friday evening's company of bridge players, and half managed to improve their 'best ten' aggregates although there were low scores too. Two stood out, each exceeding 6,000 points on the night (the first time this has happened in 2015): Malcolm Tipler with 6,670 (raising his overall score by 3,510 on the night) and Iris Clyde (6,230, going up 2,290 and taking her beyond 50,000 for the season). Hazel Foubister was third with 4,670 (plus 1,790).

The evening seemed characterised by weird card distributions such as 6-5-1-1, with one player even picking up a 9-carder! Just as a few years back the Doubling card crept into use, now we are seeing Redoubles more often, Malcolm for example being one beneficiary.

Malcolm's continued good form puts him on fourth place on 48,120, but for the three leaders things are tighter after Iris's high score: Clinton leads with 54,600, which is 1,960 ahead of Graham, with Iris now only 940 further back. There is all to play for!

Last updated : 25th Aug 2015 14:31 GMT

Before bridge began this week, the Club were lucky to have a brief visit from Anna Gudge and Mark Newton of ECATS, who are now based in Orkney. ECATS is the organisation that handled so efficiently the scoring of the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs competition in which the Club participated last week. They are very involved with the World Bridge Federation and other bridge bodies and for more information about what they do please visit the About Us page on the ECATS website. Part of the reason for their visit was to encourage the Club to participate in the Simultaneous Pairs competition they will be running in order to raise money for Children in Need in November. I hope that the Club will agree to support that fund-raising effort.

This week there were five and a half tables for Duplicate Pairs and 27 boards were played. By some quirk of fate, the top scoring pair were Iso & Dot with 59.90%. Second were SheilaW & Pat with 55.73% and in joint third place were Nila & MargaretK and Jim & Clinton on 55.21%.

Note: It looks as though the hands were rotated 180 degrees when put back in the board at the end of round 1 on board 12. It is probably not material to the overall result for the board.

Leading the rankings, based on their ten best results, are Roger & Dennis with an average of 61.23%. DaveW & David lie second with 60.33% and Graham & SheilaL 59.47%.

Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs - 30 June

Many thanks to the thirteen pairs who took part in the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs event yesterday evening and well done to Alan & Wilma, DaveH & Sheena and Jim & Clinton for taking the first three places on the evening at our event in isolation (ie as if it was just one event of our normal series and not part of the simultaneous pairs competition).

The Dounby results have been submitted to ECATS and these can be seen changing as more clubs submit their results. The ECATS results appear on the following page but will keep changing for now:

http://www.simpairs.com/ranking.asp?session=005892&ClubID=Overall

Click on Club to the right of that page to see the Dounby results as submitted but also please be aware that adjustments are made to results and positions as more and more results come in and the final ranking positions, even within Dounby, may look quite different as part of the overall. I am assured by Anna Gudge at ECATS that this is normal and is affected by frequencies of boards being played and individual scorecards for the boards. Individual scorecards are not visible yet on the ECATS site but will be after Saturday, 4 July. I make no attempt at explaining how it all works but explanations for the amendments can be seen by referring to the following in turn, in conjunction with the personal scorecards when they are available:

Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs - 30 June

This is just to remind Dounby players that on Tuesday, 30 June the Club will be taking part in the Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs event. Dounby and Orkney Bridge Club players have been emailed to remind them about the competition and have been asked to registered with Iso Tipler by 6:00 pm on Sunday, 28 June if they intend to take part. After the event, it will be about one week before the Club results will be added to this website. This is because not all clubs play on Tuesdays and because of the need to allow time for all clubs to submit their results for processing by the organisers.

Duplicate Pairs - 23 June

Another milestone was reached this week with six and a half tables of players competing, including Dianne and Brian paying a fleeting visit from Canada. Pleased to welcome you both to the Club. Twenty six boards were played, with two boards each round.

When the provisional results were given immediately after play, there was an outstanding query to be sorted out with regard to board 10. It looks as though the cards were put back in the wrong place after being played by pairs 12 and 4, so for the last two rounds the contracts were played by N/S rather than E/W which had been the case beforehand. To deal with this, the pair numbers for the last two rounds have been switched round so that the pairs that actually played the contract are shown as having played in the direction that matches the cards. Please always be careful on returning cards to boards.

There seemed to be quite a number of long suits, voids and singletons across the boards. There were many tempters to bid game and many of those paid off but an example where game was not the place to be and the opposition waved their doubling cards to good effect was board 5. All except one contract was doubled and all of the doubled contracts went down. No slams were bid and made but twelve tricks were won by pair 7 on board 3 in a contract of 4♠.

Top pairing for the evening was DaveH & MargaretM who scored 69.58%.Second were Jim & Clinton with 65.00% and third were DaveW & David with 60.83%.

In the year to date rankings, Roger & Dennis lead with an average of 61.23% for their best ten results. Lying second are DaveW & David with an average of 60.33% and third are Graham & SheilaL with an average of 59.42%.

Inter-County Weekend - Team event on Sunday afternoon

Malcolm & Iso would quite like to play in the teams event on the Sunday afternoon of the Inter-County weekend. At the moment we do not have another pair to make up a team of four so if there is another pair from Dounby or Orkney Bridge Club who would be willing to put up with us in a team or knows of another pair looking to make up a team, please let Iso know. Thank you.

Individual Rubber Bridge, Friday 6 March 2015

13 players were present on Friday 6 March, so we played 3 tables with one person sitting out for their guaranteed 500!

Top on a higher-scoring evening was Dave Walker, fresh from top spot with Graham Lyon in Kirkwall on Wednesday; Dave scored 4,170 with Roger Davies second on 4,080 and three players sharing third spot on 3,940: Clinton Rendall, Margaret Mainland and Sheila Lyon. 10 points behind them was Graham who had started so well - 2,480 on the first two tables (700 with Clinton then partnering Roger, scoring nothing on the first two hands but then twice opening to find Roger with 16-plus points. They stopped in a major game the first time but bid and made a vulnerable Six Spades the second) but scoring only 570 across the next four!

In Round 3, one table saw three players each with a seven card suit! Iso Tipler held Diamonds but against her Linda Milne and Ann Oag each had a major - the final contract being Four Hearts by Linda, making six.

Graham continues to dominate the annual competition, with 39,630 points from nine evenings. Well placed next is Pat Shearer (28,420 from seven) and next come three players at just above 27,000 from eight, Linda on 27,490 being the first of these.

CAN YOU HELP?

Dave Walker is very keen to play Duplicate Pairs at Dounby on Tuesday evenings. On a few occasions he has partnered one of the other duplicate players when that person's regular partner has not been available but so far he has not been able to find a regular partner or even a series of irregular partners for every week. It's all very frustrating for a keen player to be kept away from the table. Can you help?

The most immediate need is for a partner for this coming Tuesday, 10 March, whether or not the person can commit to a longer term partnership.

Beyond that it would be good if he could find someone to partner him more regularly. We all know he is a good player and does well when he has the opportunity to play - he and Graham won at Orkney Bridge Club last night - but I also have it on very good authority that he is an encouraging and helpful partner which is great for anyone who happens to have less experience but might consider partnering him and learning from him. Please give it some thought and if you think you can help please either speak to Dave directly or send a message to the Club via the website (select 'Information' on the side menu and then click on 'Secretary - Iso Tipler' to open a blank email) and I will put you in touch with him. Or if you cannot help yourself perhaps you could suggest someone else who might be willing. Thank you.

AGM and Individual Rubber Bridge - 20 February 2015

Many thanks to all those who came along for the Annual General Meeting on Friday, 20 February. In the interests of playing bridge we went through the business of the meeting very quickly but I hope we covered everything adequately and that no-one felt that they did not have the opportunity to speak out on any issues. The minutes will be prepared in the next few days and will be made available to members.

Turning now to bridge and the Individual Rubber Bridge competition. Speaking has one who had two zero scoring rounds and who after five rounds had only managed to scrape enough scores to just squeeze past the 800 points mark, I was disappointed in the cards I seemed to be getting all evening.

The same cannot be said for Graham who over the course of the evening must have been getting good cards as he scored both a 700 rubber and a 300 game in two rounds plus a 300 or a 350 for games/part games  in four more rounds, leaving only one round without a score below the line. Not content with that, he also managed to bring down contracts, scoring 500 and 400 above the line in two cases for the privilege. He ended with a total score of 6000 points putting him in first place for the evening. In second and third places were Ally on 5320 points and Pat with 5100 points.

These results consolidate Graham's top place in the rankings for the year to date on 32720 points, with Pat in second place on 25250 points and Linda third on 24630 points. Graham and Pat are both averaging over 4000 points and, further down the ranking having missed two or three evenings' play, Clinton and Iris are also averaging over 4000 points for the times they have played.

Annual General Meeting

Just a peedie note to remind you that the Club AGM is on Friday, 20 February 2015 at 7:00 pm before bridge. If you want to have papers for the meeting, please print them off from the email previously sent out to Members as I will not be taking along extra copies. If you will not be attending and have not already let me know, please send apologies so that I can present them at the meeting. Thanks.

Shh.....

We are just a month into the new season but a few rumblings have been filtering back to me from various sources so rather than let it all fester and spoil the relaxed atmosphere, I feel I ought to raise a few points, all of which are to do with showing consideration and respect to other members and avoiding doing anything that interferes with their concentration on bidding and playing hands. We are probably all guilty in one way or another and I don't wish to give offence to anyone in doing this so please take these comments in the good spirit in which they are intended. If we all 'think on', hopefully the rumblings will fade away. Thank you.

  • If you finish a round before others, please keep your voices down so as not distract others who are still playing. This applies also and especially so if you are sitting out a round. Voices carry more than you may realise and can really ruin concentration.
  • Between boards there is often a desire to say something about the hand just played but, if you must do, please keep it very short and stop as soon as the next hand is picked up so that everyone at the table can focus on the new hand.
  • If your partner does something wrong, please don't criticise their play while at the table. It makes others uncomfortable.
  • Please avoid slow bidding and play at all times so that all boards can be completed within seven minutes each and when the alarm sounds the three minute warning for the end of the round, make a real effort to finish within the next three minutes.
  • If you and your partner have bits of your system you need to fine tune, please don't discuss these at the competitive table.

2015 Season

Tuesday, 6 January 2015 sees the start of the new season's Duplicate Pairs competition and Friday, 9 January 2015, the start of the Individual Rubber Bridge competition. We hope to see plenty of players back refreshed and ready for battle and to be able to welcome some new members during the year.

It is also the start of the membership year and 2014 members are reminded that the membership fee for 2015 has been set at £5. Table fees remain at £2 per session for members and £3 for non members.

If the personal details provided on your original application form are unchanged then all you need to do is pay your membership fee to the Treasurer or Secretary when you attend the Club for the first time in 2015. If your details have changed, please ask the Secretary for a new form to complete.

Good luck, good cards and have fun!

2015 Season

Dounby Bridge Club is taking a break over the Christmas and New Year period. The dates for the start of the new competitions are:

Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 6 January 2015
Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 9 January 2015

During the break there will be some work going on in the background to prepare the scoring software and the website for the new season so odd things might appear from time to time while I experiment!

Results for period 8 August to 15 August 2014

Please note that, owing to holidays, results for the Individual Rubber Bridge on Fridays 8 and 15 August and for the Duplicate Pairs Bridge on Tuesday, 12 August will not be posted on the website until a few days after the end of that period. There will also be no report in the Orcadian for that period.

Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 15 July

The results produced last night have been posted on the website but please note that there is a query on board 8 which is likely to lead to an amendment. One table played the board and one Passed Out the hand but the other recorded the hand as Not Played which produces a different outcome. I think it should have been Passed Out in both cases but am checking that. As I am going to be out most of today and this evening, it may be tomorrow before I can update the results and do the report.

Important! No Duplicate Pairs - Tuesday, 24 June

Due to a few folk being away or otherwise unavailable, please note that there will be no Duplicate Bridge pairs this evening, Tuesday, 24 June. Unless there is further notification to the contrary it will take place as usual the following Tuesday.

Individual rubber bridge will go ahead as normal on Friday, 27 June.

The Club was pleased to welcome George and Kathleen Taylor, on holiday in Orkney, and especially pleased because this meant that there were four full tables and no sitting out.  The aim was to play seven rounds of four boards, giving a total of twenty-eight boards but without the clock running there was some fairly slow bidding and play at some stage which meant that we had to drop the final round.  We will be back on the clock next week!

Owing to a mental aberration when preparing the hands, the hands for Board 28 were incorrect at the outset and when it was first played a switch was made so that the hands intended for Board 29 were moved to Board 28 and everyone then played the new cards.  I have not been able to correct the hands for the results but if you ignore the hand linked to the contract for Board 28 on the results page and look instead at the hand for Board 29 in the Hands schedule you will see the hands played for Board 28. The revised Board 28 hands are also shown above. Ignore the bidding box and the show all hands button.  Are you following this????

Iso Tipler & Nila McCallum came top with a score of 57.5%, followed by George & Kathleen Taylor (55.83%) and Margaret Mainland & Marjory Cook (55%). There was one Small Slam bid and made by Roger Davies & Dennis Paice on Board 11 and in fact they made all thirteen tricks. The two other pairs playing E/W on that board made thirteen and twelve tricks, respectively, but had not bid a slam. A Small Slam was bid but not made by Linda Ross & Linda Milne on Board 26. Twelve tricks were made by George & Kathleen on Board 2 and by Roger & Dennis on Board 10 but no slam was bid. Click anywhere in this box to go to the Results calendar and select the relevant date to view the full results.

To view the rankings for the year, select Duplicate Pairs from the Competitions menu tab. The competition is based on the best ten results over the year to date but the table shows pairs who have completed less than ten times. To see the 'real' rankings, just ignore the pairs who are shown on the table as having played less than ten times.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 16 May

With several people away competing in the Orkney v Shetland intercounty match this weekend, it was a select band of five players available to play Individual Rubber Bridge. Although all sought to achieve a good score to take advantage of the absences and move up the rankings, there was only minor change.

Top score for the night was Malcolm Tipler (4310) with Iso Tipler (4110) and Margaret Kirkness (3540) second and third. Fourth and fifth were Roger Davies (3350) and Dennis Paice (3150).

These scores enabled Roger Davies to overtake Linda Milne and Iso and Malcolm Tipler both to move ahead of Glad Marwick in the rankings for the year to date. However, the top three places in the ranking continue to go to Graham Lyon (44620), Iris Clyde (43450) iand Dennis Paice (40890) in third.

Click anywhere in this box to go to the results page and select the relevant date to view the detailed results week by week, or choose Individual Rubber from the Competitions menu tab to view the rankings summary.

Individual Rubber Bridge - Friday, 18 April

The Club welcomed two new players this week - John and Ruth McInroy. They are well known to some members through Orkney Bridge Club and although only occasional visitors to Orkney Dounby Bridge Club will be pleased to see them whenever they are able to join us.

The top three places for Friday Individual Rubber Bridge were Dennis Paice (4860), Glad Marwick (4540) and Margaret Kirkness (4490). For the full results please click anywhere in this box and select the date from those listed on the Results page.

Twelve players have so far recorded the ten scores needed to feature in the overall placings in the Friday Individual Bridge competition.  Despite his absence, Graham Lyon continues to lead the rankings with his best ten scores totalling 44620. He has a clear lead over the next two in the rankings who are Iris Clyde (41060) and Dennis Paice (40890).

Tuesday Duplicate Pairs - 28 January

Two new pairs, Linda Ross & Linda Milne and Joy Ritch & Marian Ashburn came along to Tuesday Duplicate Pairs on 28 January, giving us four full tables which was great.

There was one little slam bid and made by Linda Ross & Linda Milne on board 12.  For the evening, the convincing match point winners were Dennis Paice & Roger Davies (65.25%), followed by Graham & Sheila Lyon (58.47%) and Sheila Walls & Pat Shearer (53.39%).

The Handicap results cannot be relied upon at the moment as for some reason the pairing of Linda Milne and Linda Ross is not showing up on the handicap result although their handicap was calculated.  This oddity has been referred to the software provider and hopefully will be sorted soon.  In the meantime, the Handicap results for the other pairings indicates another top for Dennis Paice & Roger Davies (Adjusted 54.96%), with Margaret Mainland & Marjory Cook (Adjusted 53.84%) in second place and Iso & Malcolm Tipler (Adjusted 53.04%) in third.

There were a couple of problems with hands during the evening and I need to just remind all players to count their cards at the start and end of each board and to be very careful to make sure that the cards are put into the correct slots in the boards.  A few minor errors, easily resolved, where picked up when the results were input to the computer.  When filling in the travellers, please be sure to enter the correct details for each contract (including any doubling), tricks, lead and the score (in the correct column).

Graham and Sheila edge ahead

It was good to have three full tables of players for duplicate pairs on Tuesday, 21 January and to have managed to finish by about 10:30 pm.

Graham and Sheila Lyon (58%) narrowly beat Roger Davies and Dennis Paice (57%) on Tuesday, 21 January to take an early overall lead in the Tuesday duplicate pairs competition.

There was only one little slam contract bid, by Malcolm and Iso on board 15, and that was due more to being unable to agree on a lower contract than having a realistic chance of making it.

Board 13 was passed out by one table, although at least one other table thought twice about it before the fourth in hand scraped up a bid.

A couple of other hands were not played due to the table running out of time.  The aim is to allow seven minutes per hand which should enable us to complete all the boards and still finish by 10:30 pm.  Some hands are definitely easier than others to bid and play but all players need to be conscious of the need to keep things moving along.

New Duplicate Bridge Opportunity

The Club has historically played Individual Rubber or Board Bridge at the Dounby Centre on Friday evenings.  This will continue as normal but in 2014 the Club is introducing a second opportunity for playing bridge at the Club by offering Duplicate Pairs Bridge on Tuesday evenings, this evening being selected to avoid clashing with other bridge clubs on mainland Orkney.

Some pairs have already indicated their intention to play but the Club would welcome more.  If you are interested please contact the Secretary, Iso Tipler, using the Contact Us form on the Information sub-menu page.

Those wishing to play should arrive at the Dounby Centre at 6:50 pm if possible, ready for play to start at 7:00 pm.  The Table Money for Members is £2 per player and for Visitors and Guests is £2.50 per player.  It is helpful for the Secretary to be informed in advance if you intend to play.  If you are already a Member you can do this via the Members Only page on the website.

Results for each Duplicate Pairs evening will be posted on the website, usually on the following day.

20th Anniversary
20th Anniversary

In September, Dounby Bridge Club reached its 20th Anniversary and on Friday, 15 November celebrated the occasion with a special bridge evening.

The club was formed in 1993 and the founding players, providing just one bridge table of four, were Pauline Bowden, Hugh and Sheila Lyon and their son Graham Lyon.  Since it began the club has been led in turn by Pauline Bowden, Dave and Mina Malarky, and Don Auston with Graham second in command in each of those periods but about twelve years ago Graham took over and now leads with support from other members.

The twentieth anniversary marks another milestone.  Over the years the number of players has varied, building up to four tables but then declining again with the risk of folding. There were times when only three players were available on a Friday evening so they all went home or there was frantic last minute ringing round to find a fourth to make up a table. Trying to keep going in those circumstances must have been tough and disheartening,

Thankfully, Sheila, Graham and the remaining members persevered and fortunes have reversed. Now the club regularly sees three or four tables filled and once in a while five.  This is in no small part due to a merry band of players from Kirkwall who organise themselves to car share and trek out to Dounby on Friday evenings, bringing with them their playing experience, good humour and sometimes fancies.

Twenty eight people came along to the 20th anniversary celebrations to enjoy six rounds of bridge, supper and a raffle.  Graham welcomed everyone and reminded them of the friendly and relaxed nature of the club by citing the tongue-in-cheek Ten Commandments for bridge players.  Jean Tulloch had baked a special cake for the occasion and before play began it was ceremonially cut by Sheila.

At the end of the each of the first two rounds there were special prizes and after the third round a supper break during which everyone did their best to eat their way through the absolutely splendid buffet to which many had contributed.

At the end of the supper break, Roger Davies gave a short vote of thanks: first, to everyone who had contributed in any way to making the event happen, in providing supper and in donating the playing and raffle prizes; then, to everyone for coming along and making it a very enjoyable evening; and, finally, to Sheila and Graham who were presented with a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of good cheer, respectively.

After two more rounds with special prizes and a final round, the evening drew to a close with the raffle and the award of prizes for blue and pink scorecard holders down to third place, with a consolation prize for each colour. The top points scorer from the blues was Margaret Mainland but as she had provided the prizes she opted to award the winner’s prize to the next best scorer, Clinton Rendall. The winner from the pinks was Gladys Marwick. Well done and thank you to all for taking part.

Bridge at the club is taken seriously but not too seriously. We play as individuals, rather than in pairs, and depending on numbers may play either rubber or board bridge.  Playing as individuals makes it easy to accommodate new players.  So if you are a bridge player, even an inexperienced one, and would like to join us, just come along to the Dounby Centre any Friday evening at 7:00 pm (except between Christmas and New Year), pay the very modest fee which is currently £1 a week and you will be very welcome.
