There have been queries recently about the club constitution.  This has been available for some time on this website - click on the second button on the left which is labelled 'Constitution' for easy identification.

The Dickleburgh Bridge Club provides an opportunity for players of all standards to enjoy bridge in a comfortable and companionable environment.

We are happy to welcome visitors and encourage them to become members.

If you are still developing your feel for  the game you need have no concern about the reaction of other players; we were all beginners once.

We meet in Dickleburgh, south Norfolk, which is easily accessible from both Diss and Harleston (click on Information  button on left).

There are few better ways of passing three hours on a Friday afternoon, at least for £1.50 and a cup of tea or coffee.

What I say is, patience, and shuffle the cards.

How to play bridge

Bridge evolved from the English pastime of whist, a similar but simpler game, which dates from at least the early seventeen-hundreds.

In both, a card is played from each of the four hands in succession, and the resulting four-card “trick” is won either by the highest card in the suit that was led or by the highest card in the “trump” suit—a designated supersuit, which defeats all others. This sounds straightforward until you try it.

One of the reasons bridge continues to fascinate players all over the world is that, in order to become even sort of good at it, you have to be willing to be bad at it for a long time.

Behaviour

The following lines, from American writer Max Ehrman's poem Desiderata, are worth consideration by bridge players in the heat of battle:

'Go placidly among the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.  As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.  Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.  Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit.'
