Bridge Tips

When defending remember that your lead indicates to your partner what other cards you hold in the suit you have chosen. If your card is not top of a sequence then

low=like or high= hate

where 2,3 and 4 are low and 7,8 and 9 are high

On the other side of the table if your partner is on lead your 'attitude' is expressed by the card you play

high= aye or low= loathe

Breaking News

The Friday afternoon club has been meeting at Silverton for several years and we have outgrown the restricted space available.

We are moving to The Ruffwell Inn and our first meeting will be at 1.30 on the 2nd May. Please click on 'Information' for more details.

The club will now be known as The Devon School of Bridge Club and is affiliated to the English Bridge Union (membership no 00481997).

We warmly invite visitors and new members to come and try our splendid facilities and to join us in creating 'The friendliest Bridge Club in Devon', membership is free until 1st September.

'The Devon School of Bridge'

The Devon School of Bridge is a private club dedicated to providing an efficient learning resource for all those who wish to learn or improve their ability playing the fascinating game of Bridge. The principal teacher is Mike Gregory  and courses are offered to all levels of ability from Absolute Beginners and Improvers levels 1, 2 and 3 through  to supervised play and advanced Workshops for  more experienced players.

Most courses start in September  and run for 10 or 20 weeks through to Spring.

Additionally, short courses and workshops are offered on Friday mornings throughout the summer and in 2014 these start witha 5 week course 'Back to Basics' commencing on 2nd May at 10.00.

The Devon School of Bridge Club is a very friendly Duplicate Bridge Club which meets every Friday afternoon to play either 21 or 24 boards. Play commences promptly at 1.30.

We welcome all members and visitors regardless of ability or ranking and you do not need to come with a partner as we operate a host system.

Friday Afternoon Results

Congratulations to this week's winners Sue & Kevin  who were 1st N/S with 54% and to Lin & Kate 1st E/W with 60.80%, well done.

Bridge & Birds

At £150 per person this weekend break is tremendous value on a very friendly holiday park with fantastic views.

It is aimed at Beginners and Improvers and will include 2 free lessons and a Saturday night competition with a first prize of a Weekend Break for 2 people.

Additionally John Griffin will be setting up nets from about 9.30 am to catch, measure, study and ring wild birds. If your partner doesn't play bridge but is a keen birder, this would make a perfect weekend away.

Please contact Mike on 01398 341458 and 0758 544 2628 or by e-mail
