Website Features

Talking to various people it is clear:-

a) Some have little interest in the site and just want to play bridge (nothing wrong in that)

b) Some do not realise the amount and types of information that is available.

c) Some have difficulty navigating the site.

The following somewhat lengthy note is an attempt to be a reference for those in category b) & c) above.

There have been a lot of e-mails explaining various features of the site. For ease of reference I have included all of them in this note. I have also included other items not previously mentioned.

To access the site go to www.bridgewebs.com/dereham

You see the "Home" page. All the following features are accessed through this "Home" page. In some cases you have a variety of ways of getting to the information but we will use the menu on the left hand side of the page which at present shows 19 sections (1st one is "Home Page" and the last one "Bridge Webs")

I do not intend to comment on all 19 sections. Just single click on any you are interested in.

Hand of the Week (2nd item on the list)

A single click and an interesting hand is shown together with an analysis of the bidding and play. Contributions from members will be much appreciated.

Information (3rd item on the list)

A single click produces a drop down of 7 items. Some of these are not currently being used. The first item "Duplicate Bridge Procedures" will be of interest to some.

The website features as explained in this note is the 7th item on the list.

Calendar (5th item on the list)

A single click and forthcoming events are shown. The first three are automatically shown on the "Home" page on the right hand side.

Results (7th item on the list)

A single click and the "Results Calendar" appears. In addition the Results section of the Home page menu has a drop down showing two sub-sections.

a) Results Calendar

Dealing first with the Results Calendar screen we see that all events that have taken place in 2017 are listed. If the hands are displayed for the event then there is a card symbol to the right of the date. If you want to see the results, for any Duplicate session, click on the event. (Clicking on any "Bridge League" entry has no effect at present).

Let us assume you click on the event for 19th July you see the Ranking List for the results that night.

You can now click on any Pair for more information about their results. So to continue the example we click on Jane & Penny who finished top that night.

We now have a screen which shows their results on each of the 21 boards. From the chart on the left hand side we see that they scored well against Di & Jeff (50%, 83% & 100%) but not so well against John & Ronnie (0%, 33% & 67%).

If we scroll down we see that Jane only played 1 hand scoring 100% whilst Penny played 5 averaging 63%. There are plenty of other statistics, shown in this section, which are produced by the software e.g. Penny had 19 doubletons during the evening.

If we now look at the right hand side of the screen we see Hand 1 and the results on the 4 occasions the board was played (Jane & Penny result highlighted as we used their name to access screen). Any board can be looked at by clicking on the required number above the hand. You will see that 21 boards were in play.

Looking at the Hand there are 4 smaller boxes in the corners of the large box.

Top left box shows Dealer & Vulnerability.

Bottom left shows the number of High Card Points (HCP) held by each player using the Milton Point Count system - 4 for an ace, 3 for a king, 2 for a queen and 1 for a jack.

Top right shows the optimum result.

Bottom right shows what contracts are possible for each player. So for Hand 1 East could have made 5C, 5H, 3S or 3NT. This assumes best play by declarer and the defence. Bidding to those contracts is often far from easy.

Hover the mouse over any particular hand gives other information. (See my e-mail 29th June for full details)

Suffice to say, I do not feel that some of the information is very useful. The final item "Losers" is of interest but it is beyond the scope of this note to go into detail here. Look in any good bridge book and find refernece to the Losing Trick Count and you will learn about "Losers".

It is possible to download all the hands if suitable Bridge software is on you computer. Open the website using the Internet Explorer browser and get to the screen where the hand is shown. Click on "Play it again"; click "PC" and then "Save". The hands then appear on my bridge software (QPlus11) under "downloads", via "Own Deals" then "Retrieve from file". The procedures may vary depending on the type of software held.

b) Personal Analysis

Go back to the "Home" page and the "Results" drop down from the menu and we see "Personal Analysis". A single click on this gives you a list of all players who have played since we started using the Scorebridge software.

Click on the name of the person you are interested in and you see a graph. The more results available for an individual the more meaningful the graph is. Scroll down and the results for that person are listed.

Competitions (8th on the list)

A single click gives a drop down of a) Individual & b) Pairs c) Individual Declarer Percentages

a) Individual

On the right hand side of the screen we see a league table based on the highest average score for each player. After the 19th July evening Christine and Richard led with an average of 58.34%. (Since then more results have been added which has changed the table). On the extreme right hand side the number of events making up the average is shown. There are various options under the title of the page which might be of interest

b) Pairs.

Back to the drop down on the Home page you can click on Pairs and again we get a league table. After the 19th July John & Shirley were top with an average of 63.10%. This is based on the one event where they partnered each other. (The position has since changed following more results).

There is a facility to change the minimum number of results required, to qualify for inclusion on league table, from the present 1 to a higher number.

The league table is based on the average of the 10 best results. Some players have played more than 10 times since we started using Scorebridge, so it is only the top ten that will be included in the calculation of the average e.g. Richard Stratton's 33.13% for the 6th September is shown in red and a line through it. If the club ever get to the stage of weekly meetings then there is an argument for increasing the 10 to count to say 15. Regular visits to the club can eliminate their poor scores by replacing them with better ones.

The competition league tables are automatically updated when more results are included.

c) Individual Declarer Percentages

The manually entered league table is taken from results from the Scorecard Analysis. The results are subject to many things and are only a guide.

Dereham & District League (9th item on list)

This is mainly for people who play in the League at Gressenhall on the last Friday of the month.

A single click produces our drop down.

Division 1 is shown.

Information includes the current league table; results of matches so far and the players in the squads of the 7 teams in the division. You will see several of the Dereham Duplicate players also play in the league. The remaining fixtures of this All Play All event are also shown.

Back to the drop down on the Home page and if you click on Division 2 you see similar information for the 6 teams involved.

When the league was started in 2014 we called it the "Dereham & District League". Year after year the league has grown to its present 13 teams. As teams from Hunstanton, Fakenham, Swaffham, Downham Market & Watton are now playing perhaps a new title is needed.

Basic Training (10th item on the list)

A single click produces a drop down with various topics listed. Click on the one you are interested in.

More Training (11th item on list)

Defence v Suit Opener (12th item on list).

Defence v Notrump (13th item on list).

Glossary (14th item on list).

Administration (18th item on list)

A single click produces a drop down of 3 items.

The Site statistics might be of interest. The 3 peaks in the graph probably coincide with results being published for the Duplicate evenings and the league results at the end of the month.

The pages viewed in 2017 is also shown by the web counter that appears on some pages.
