Atkins Cup - Swiss Pairs event 1pm on Sunday 24th March

This is an annual event which this year is being held at Spondon. Final movement depends on numbers, we are looking to play 6 × 6 board rounds, 18 in each session.

Don Smedley 1933 to 2020

It is with great sadness that the DCBA has to announce the death of Don Smedley 12/Oct/2020.

John Griffin has written some words about Don's life and bridge that can be downloaded by clicking here.

Very best wishes from the DCBA Committee, and bridge players in Derbyshire and much much wider, go to Don's wife and family.

Don's wife June has written..

First may I thank everyone for the lovely bunch of flowers you sent to me in memory of Don. It contained some stems of purple hebe which I am going to attempt to root as cuttings so I can keep them permanently. Also my thanks for the astonishing number of sympathy cards I received. They were of great help to me as they reminded me of Don as he was before the Alzheimer's took hold. We had a short service of commital for the close family. There was no need for us to be reminded of Don's life history or of his qualities as a husband, father and grandfather. Instead the celebrant used quotations from the cards to show how much he was valued by all his friends in the world of Bridge and the world of composition and solution of Chess problems. Don had so many years of pleasure from playing Bridge and made so many friends over the years, so thank you for your kind words.

On-line teaching from England International
Oliver Powell, an England U26 Junior international, is running two free short taster teaching sessions on 16th and 18th July.

THURSDAY 16TH JULY 6PM-7PM (ISH), CLUB-LEVEL PLAYERS
Beforehand Oli will send out a BBO .lin file for you to upload to be played during the session (upload guide included).
You will play the boards and there will be an optional Zoom call available following the conclusion of play where we will discuss the learning points.
There will be a clear objective on each of the 4 boards played, for this taster session each board will be a different topic.
The boards will look at mistakes that club players often make and by eliminating them will make you a better player!
Hand commentaries will follow the taster session.

SATURDAY 18TH JULY 12PM-1PM (ISH), COUNTY-LEVEL PLAYERS
Similar to above, file upload, play of the hands, optional Zoom call upon conclusion, hand commentaries.
Topics adjusted to common mistakes that occur during County level play.
We will talk about areas of improvement that County players are typically under-developed in.
Also will look at the mindset needed for accelerated improvement as opposed to gradual improvement that is most common at this level.

If you are interested in taking part in either of these free taster sessions, please email oznek96@gmail.com to register your interest and we can go from there, please don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Message from the Chairman

As Matt would have it, it would be nice to live in precedented times. But sadly we don’t and the current situation with COVID 19 is worrying and distressing for us all. The announcements yesterday from Boris Johnson, Sir Patrick Vallance and Prof Chris Whitty were sobering and worth listening to if you missed them. The advice is very clear. Since bridge can only be classified as a ‘non-essential social gathering’ we have no choice but to cancel all our events for however long this advice remains in place. It may well be for considerably longer than the 4 weeks, which we have cancelled so far. Some of our regular players are over 70 and advice for this group seems to be coming that they should self-isolate, probably for a protracted period of time, which will be challenging in itself. Roger Floutier will continue to update the website as appropriate.

I have not previously been a great fan of online bridge but 2020 could be the year – any port in a storm as the saying is. Many of us will inevitably be exposed to this virus but I do hope none of us will be seriously affected. The situation is developing rapidly and as soon as we think it is safe and reasonable to do so we will reactivate our calendar – but I am not expecting that to be soon.

Alastair McCance

2020 Spring Masterclass
The DCBA would like to invite you to a Masterclass on Saturday 21st March 2020.

For those of you who were at the Andrew Robson Seminar in October this email is to let you know the date of the next Masterclass will be on Saturday 21st March and NOT Friday 27th March as originally advertised.

The Masterclass will start at 9.30am and finish at approximately 4pm. It will include three workshops and a light lunch. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day. The workshops will be run by some of our more experienced bridge players and each workshop will focus on a particular topic. These topics are likely to include one on bidding, one on defence and one on how to play the cards. Details of each workshop together with a timetable for the event will be sent out at the beginning of January.

The total cost for the day will be £20 per bridge player. There will be a limit of 64 players for this event so early booking is advisable if you want to be guaranteed a place. Booking has already started. Bridge players in Derbyshire will be given priority until 21st January. After this date players from Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire will be contacted and invited to attend.

The Masterclasses are a great way to help bridge players improve. To reserve a place on the Masterclass you can either reply to this email or text Anne Townsend on 07377 555341. Once you have reserved a place, you will be sent details of how to pay. Looking forward to another successful Masterclass in 2020!

A Good News Story...

A few nights ago our team played a Brigden knockout team of 4 match against a team from Ripley. We have known each other for rather a long time but I would still like to record what a pleasure it was to play this match in the correct spirit. Everybody can always do better. We all make mistakes but there was no criticism, no falling out, plenty of banter and also a nice speed of play (finished by 10.15).

It was a pity one team had to lose. Even more so that the margin of victory after 28 boards was 1 IMP ! So there were 364 tricks contested and 1 trick separated the teams. Thanks to all players involved. Trevor Pilkington

Tournament Directors
There are a number of events promoted by the DCBA where there is no Tournament Director  - Brigden, Vic Morris, Teams of 8 etc. Any director who is there is present as a player in their own right and, as such, it is grossly unfair on them and their teams for people to demand immediate directorial assistance from them. It is extremely unlikely that a match cannot continue without resolution at that time.

  1. Please try and resolve it between the Team Captains. There are copies of the 2017 laws at Spondon if needed.
  2. If this is not possible and one of us is present then make a clear note of the problem and ask for help at the end of the event with all parties present.
  3. If no director is present then by all means contact one of us at home (at a reasonable time please) or ask for a ruling by email with all the facts included and approved by both teams.
  4. In extremis there are a number of EBU directors who will give rulings over the phone. List on the EBU web site.

Derbyshire Junior Success
Derbyshire Junior Success

In the final round of the competition, the U21 team with Harry narrowly lost to the winners Holland, but it was enough to move them into 3rd place as the silver medallists France thrashed Poland. They qualify for the World Championships next year.

In the U26’s the first 8 teams of the 23 qualify for the World championships next year. At the start of the day England were 10 victory points off Czech Republic, the 8th placed team. Both teams had resounding wins, but at the end England were still 8.5 VPs off the 8th slot, now held by Bulgaria. Ian played in the second game, and a 20 IMP gain on the last two boards saw them whitewash Ireland 20 – 0. They were now 3VPs behind Israel, 6 behind Bulgaria and 8 behind the Czechs.

The final game was against eventual silver medalists Holland. After 7 hands they were 19 IMPs behind, clawed it back to be 4 ahead, then with 2 hands to go were 8 behind. The Czechs had finished their 15 boards, still 5 VP’s ahead. On board 14 the Dutch stopped in 5H, but Kennedy and Ye bid and made 6NT. On the last board England needed to gain at least 3 IMPs to get the necessary VP’s.  Norton and Natt made an overtrick in 3C, 110 points. So Kennedy and Ye needed to get a positive score. The Dutch bid 3NT, a contract made by 9 other pairs. The pressure told and the Dutch player erred in trying to establish Diamonds rather than clubs. Down 1.  5 IMP’s to England who gained 8th place with 270.67 VP’s to 270.11.

The ladies team with Hannah Tuus had an up-and-down series of matches, finishing 8th of the 9 teams.

The England U16 team also took a Bronze medal, finishing 3rd of the 18 teams by the narrow margin of 1.2 VPs.

Website Changes

Since mid April, I have been learning about the DCBA website and making some changes. Below is a summary and some help for you to find your way around...

  1. Up to date - I have updated the honours boards and other pages, hopefully so the website will be more current.
  2. Simplify - I've tried to reduce the clutter and group similar items together under standard menu items on the left.
  3. Left Menu - Where left menu items are in UPPER CASE, you will find more options below by clicking on the heading. E.g. If you click on MASTERCLASSES you will see a sub-menu containing many of the masterclass document delivered by our experts

DCBA Competitions

The rules of our competitions are published on the DCBA website and details of our calendar and competitions (Sept-Aug) are published in our members hand book. This year we emailed the document to as many members that we could and it is also available via this website. Each year competitions are discussed at our AGM and then the competitions subcommittee meet in June/July to finalise the new calendar and agree any competition changes, the calendar/members hand book is then approved at the following main committee meeting. If any members have any comments or suggestions please try and attend the AGM on May 2nd 2019 and then members attending can agree or make comment. Should you have comments or suggestions and are unable to attend the AGM please pass them to the DCBA secretary (Jim Parker; Mob 07980716894; jimparker@totalise.co.uk) or your Club’s DCBA Representative and they can be raised at the AGM on your behalf. Please try and avoid making suggestions too close to an event as often it is too late to make changes and may only increase the stress levels of the event organisers. Your input will be appreciated and making it at the right time means we can evaluate your suggestion and hopefully improve our competitions for the benefit of members.

Smedley Salver Cancellation This Week

Due to the inconsiderate actions of the England football team there will be insufficient people at Spondon on Wednesday, 9th July to allow a viable competition to take place. This round has therefore been cancelled.

As a result the following changes have been made to the rules (for this year only)

1. Pairs need to play in at least 3 rounds out of the 5 available to qualify (from 4 out of 6)

2. The final score in the Smedley Salver will be calculated based on the best 3 scores acheived whilst playing in the event.

Unfortunately suggestions, such as another Wednesday (September!) or playing on a Thursday, may well be intrinsically unfair to a section of the people playing and, as such, are not viable alternatives.

Please let anyone you are aware of who does not look at this Web Site know.

On May 14th DCBA is holding a Trials Event with a view to selecting the team of eight to represent Derbyshire in this year's President's Cup - the 'Northern Tollemache' - which this year is on the weekend of 15th/16th July at Manchester BC (teams for Saturday and Sunday may differ so players do not have to be available for the whole weekend).

The trials are on Sunday 14th in Spondon and start at 1.30pm. We have pledged to choose at least 3 pairs from the ranking list of this event and performances in this trial will be reviewed by selectors in picking teams for forthcomming inter county events. Players on the county teams list and players hoping to be included on the selection list should all be interested in participating in this event.

This is a first time that we have used trials in this way so it would be good to see the event being a success; feel free to make bridge players aware of this event.

If you wish to register to play in this event please advise the DCBA Secretary click for email link.

Amendment to clause 7 of DCBA Constitution

At the recent AGM the members agreed that we should amend clause 7 of our constitution. The vote to accept or decline this amendment will be held at the EGM on 25th May 2016.

The new proposed amendment for clause 7 is that highlighted in yellow:

7) GENERAL MEETINGS Each affiliated Club Secretary will be notified of the time and place of a General Meeting by written communication which may be posted, emailed or delivered by hand. Notice of fourteen days is required for a General Meeting. Clubs have the responsibility to inform their members. No other notification of members by the DCBA is required. All individuals in attendance who are members may vote at a General Meeting. The quorum for a General Meeting shall be 15. If there are insufficient members at the meeting to form a quorum, then the meeting may proceed except that any vote for an Officer where there is more than 1 candidate for that office must be delayed until an EGM is held in not less than 2 weeks and not more than 4 weeks after the AGM.
At the AGM further amendments were proposed:
In the event of only one applicant for officer positions that we should not need to call an EGM for the election.
Also
In the event of an EGM being called the number of attendees shall be a quorum.
These additional changes will be put to the members for acceptance at the EGM

VIC Morris Cup & Plate

This is a knockout pivot teams-of-four competition (in which each player must play 9 boards with each other player of his team in turn during the course of a 27-board match). Scoring is by aggregate points. All rounds in both events are handicapped (National Grading used, details supplied by Competitions Secretary prior to match). Teams defeated in the first round of the competition play in the Vic Morris Plate, which starts at round 2 of the Vic Morris Cup. Each member of each team carries a handicap, the aggregate of which becomes the team hadicap. Matches for rounds 1 & 2 of the Cup and the 1st round of the Plate, will be played at Spondon at 7.00pm on Wednesdays as prescribed in the calendar. Result is decided by Aggregate scoring.

Stratified Pairs

Come and join the DCBA's Stratified Pairs.

The Don Smedley Stratified Pairs is our 1st try at this unique competition where the field is broken into a number of groups.  In our case this is likely to be 3.

We have already played 1 session but that does not mean you cannot be a winner.  Each week the highest score in each group will win a cash prize and each group will be awarded Master Points.

It is an opportunity where the less experienced plays can compete against their peer group whilst learning what it is like to play against experienced players.

The experienced players learn how to compete against less experienced players and everyone's bridge experience improves.

Whether you are experienced, a beginner or an intermediate come and join in and make this a successful competition.
