Gabrielle Sherman Hand Analysis

Board 2 of the session is likely to provide a big bang. After East opens with 1♣, South has a textbook takeout double. West doesn't quite have the values to advance with 1♠, but after his pass North has a tremendous playing hand despite only 8 high card points. A cuebid is in order (with a drive to 4♥ or 5♦ in his sights). However, East will get in on the act, probably showing his side spade suit. After West raises spades and North competes in diamonds or hearts, the only question is where the action ends. Those landing in 6♦ will be very happy as there's no way to set it. Those playing in a heart slam may come to a bad end if West figures out to give partner a diamond ruff. Even if North is declarer, East might get himself in the newspaper by underleading his "solid" clubs!

Gabrielle Sherman Hand Analysis

Here is an unlucky hand for those who bid the fine 6♠ slam. After a 1♠ start by West, East will bid 2♥ followed by spade support. Some Wests may reign it in a notch since they're holding shortness in hearts. However, some will push on much to their dismay. The best line in 6♠ after a neutral diamond lead is probably to lead the club jack for a finesse. Should this lose, the plan would be to hope for decent breaks all around, throwing a diamond loser from dummy on the high clubs and then try to ruff a diamond. All of that would go well, but the 4-1 trump break will surely scuttle the slam. Too bad!

Gabrielle Sherman Hand Analysis

This is a fascinating hand in that the form of scoring determines the best auction. If this were imps, where strain is irrelevant, my ideal auction would be 1♥ - 2♣ - 3♣ (showing a little extra - the way I like to play) - 3♥ - 4♦ - now West can jump to 6♣ knowing partner should have the right cards, with no first round spade control. 6♣ is always cold by West as the spade king is protected. At matchpoints, however, those in 6♣ will lose to those who risk 6♥, which makes because the spade ace is onside. At matchpoints, a good auction is often a fast auction. I like: 1♥ - 4♦ (yes it's a bit of an underbid- quick and dirty) 5♣ - Once again pard doesn't have first round spade control, but what choice do we have - we just bid 6♥ and hope for the best.

Now North should try for game with his good 5-5 with extra values. Probably the best call is 3♥, a sort of "punt" which is usually looking for a stopper or partial stopper in that suit.
