Lynn Berg Hand Analysis (For 299ers)

South opens 1NT in third seat--proving the preemptive value of bids not at the two or three level. There's something quite inhibiting about a 1NT opener, and West may well not bid 2. If he passes, will North can't try Stayman : what would she do if partner's answer were 2? With the usual diamond lead, North will struggle to take as many as six tricks. He has to go to work on the spades and hope they break(they do). But if he tries hearts instead, he will be woefully disappointed.

South's hand proves the wisdom of opening 2NT even with an unstopped suit: it's the best description of the general value and shape of the hand. North may try Stayman , but will be happy to settle in 3NT. Everything cooperates, and 11 tricks should be routine.

McKenzie Myers Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
  Pass2NT
Pass3♣Pass3
Pass3NTAll pass

When West leads a heart and the Q holds trick one, declarer can count nine tricks - ♠AK, AQ, A, and the ♣AKQJ. In a team game or rubber bridge, that would be plenty - there's no need for declarer to mess around once he has his contract in the bag. But here at matchpoints, the rewards for overtricks are large. Declarer should, at times, risk his contract for overtricks. Board Two is one of those times. The most important factor in stretching for overtricks is being very confident that all tables are in the same contract - there's no reason to try to turn, say, 4♠ making 420 into 450 when many tables are in only 3♠; you'd be risking far more than you could gain. Here, South can be sure that all tables are in 3NT, so the risk/reward is pretty good. At trick two, declarer should take a diamond finesse - low to the jack. West will win and clear the heart suit, and South should take another diamond finesse - this time running the ten. This plan will result in two extra tricks from diamonds well over half the time. Remember: at matchpoints, the frequency of gain is much more important than the size of the gain.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis (For 299ers)

Even with this collection of quacks(queens and Jacks), most Wests will open 1♠. If North passes, East will bid 1NT, then his long diamonds over the 2♣ rebid. There are six losers unless the defense takes a nap, though. North-South may be able to make a club partial, but few will find it.

West's 1NT response to the third seat diamond opening will likely buy the contract. The ♣2 will be the lead of choice at most tables, and seven or eight tricks are there to win.

McKenzie Myers Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
PassPass1Pass
1NTAll pass

This board will be a fight over E-W's eighth trick in 1NT. North will be on lead after E-W's auction of P-1-1NT, and should take a few seconds to try to construct the unseen hands before reflexively leading fourth best from his longest and strongest (♣2). West didn't respond in a major, and he didn't raise diamonds - therefore, his longest suit is very likely to be clubs. Leading a club will most likely be doing declarer's work for him. So what's a better lead? South didn't help North out with a lead-directing overcall, so he's pretty much on his own. A "top of nothing" T could well pickle a dangerous defensive holding, as it (or a low heart) would do here. Leading dummy's suit from jack-third is very unlikely to do any good, so a spade should be North's choice. The ♠T is the standard card to lead. The ten promises the nine and denies the jack, but is ambiguous as to higher honors in the suit. When the ten goes to the four, queen, and three, South will have a very good idea of what's going on in the suit - North must have KT9 or KT98. Either way, continuing the suit sets up three spade tricks for the defense. N-S need to be careful to give declarer nothing extra. Passive defense is indicated here; the declaring side doesn't have a source of tricks to run and must find tricks in each suit. As long as neither North nor South gets too active on defense, declarer will probably only find seven tricks.

West has one of the better hands at the table, but nothing to say when South opens 1♠. North will bid 1NT and pass the 2♠ rebid happily. West shouldn't be unrealistic enough to lead her doubleton heart--partner can't have much, even when the bidding suggests she might have some heart length.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis (For 299ers)

With the excellent heart suit, West will open in third seat. North will likely bid 2♣. East's choice of raises will depend on partnership agreement. Where this will end up depends on the styles of the two opposing partnerships. South and West may be reluctant to bid very much, but North with good values and East with great shape may make this a lively auction. If East-West get pushed into 4, they'll make it when the ♠J is doubleton.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis (For 299ers)

If East gets to open 1NT in fourth seat, West can try Stayman and then bid 2♠--or just transfer in spades and then pass. However, if North has opened 1 and East overcalls 1NT, South might make a penalty double--and West won't care; she isn't leaving partner in NT anyway. That prudence is rewarded, since NT fails spectacularly.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis (For 299ers)

West's 19 count looks so great he might be tempted to open 2NT anyway. Or, if he is disciplined, he'll settle for 1♣. East will eke out a 1 response[note: this hand is too good for a weak jump shift, to most players]. When West jumps to 2NT, guaranteeing a diamond fit, East will go on to game. Even a heart lead won't hurt.

McKenzie Myers Hand Analysis

Matchpoints can be a very unforgiving game. E-W pairs that find the "correct" contract of 5 - the contract you would definitely want to be in at IMPs or rubber bridge - will end up with a terrible result for their +400 or +440. Again, matchpoints rewards frequency of gain over size of gain. The few times that 3NT could be defeated by five defensive heart tricks are made up for by the many times that 3NT does significantly better than 5. Today, West in 3NT will be held to 430 only if North finds the unlikely heart lead; otherwise, declarer will take all the tricks.

North may use the Rule of 20 and open 1♠ with two decent five card suits(I'd like it a lot better if that King were in clubs, though). South will bid 2 and forge on to 3NT. North will shrug and pass at matchpoints, knowing the K is a wonderful card.

18 HCP and a five card suit is just too much for a 1NT opener, so East opens 1♣. West bids a red suit(which one depends on style), and they'll end up in 3NT. Nine tricks are hard to come by with a diamond opening lead and careful defense.

West is startled to hear 1♠ from South. This strong, she'll double and then bid her diamonds. If West plays hearts before diamonds, she'll create a discard for a club loser, and then take the club finesse--all before trumps are fully drawn.

South has the flattest of fourth seat 1NT openers. And she'll buy the contract unless West has a way of showing both majors and is willing to use it opposite a passed partner. Even with favorable vulnerability, it's risky. North's diamonds are the making of the hand, of course.

Lynn Berg Hand Analysis (For 299ers)

After North opens 1, many Souths will get them to the three level, either preemptively or in a competitive auction. This will not work with an early club lead, so down one will be a common result. If North should pass(unlikely these days), East will open 1♣ and the spade fit is likely to be developed. Nine tricks are easy in spades.

South has the only flat hand at the table. North will use Stayman and someone will end up in 4♠--which partner will depend on their style. The friendly spade break will be a relief.

McKenzie Myers Hand Analysis

The East hand meets the "Rule of 20 " - that is, when you add together your high card points and the length of your two longest suits, if you reach 20 or more you can open the bidding. East has 11 HCP and nine cards in two suits, so it hits the magic 20 - but is this really an opening hand? I don't think so. Honors in long suits are worth a lot more than those in short suits; East's 8 HCP in short suits makes for a very poor hand. The best example of this is these two hands: ♠AKxxx Kxxxx xx ♣x and ♠xxxxx xxxxx AK ♣K - the first hand is a very nice opening bid, and the second a terrible hand.

There's an interesting point in the play. South should reach 4♠ on an auction like 1NT-2-2♠-3-4♠ or the Smolen auction of 1NT-2♣-2-3-4♠. (Smolen is a useful but infrequently occurring convention where responder with 5-4 in the majors jumps in his shorter major to allow the strong hand to declare in a 5-3 fit. This comes up so rarely that it should not be high on your list of treatments to start playing.) On the first round of trumps, East will play the ♠J. Some declarers will now play to the ♠Q to try to squish an original ♠JT, but that's a low percentage play. This is one example of what's called Restricted Choice - if East had ♠JT originally, he had a choice of equal cards to play, so it's roughly twice as likely that once he plays the ♠J he had no choice - that is, he had an original holding of ♠KJ or ♠J alone. Declarer should run the ♠8 to cater to either an original ♠T42 or ♠KT42 on his left. If you do that and lose to an original ♠JT, you can at least feel good about making the right play...

After North opens 1 and jump-shifts, will they end up in NT or diamonds? Hearts will not be the great source of tricks one would hope when the break is so terrible, but the game is safe when the clubs are polite enough to be 4-4.

This is a sparse looking North hand to have as much as 17 points--talk about aces and spaces! But South's scattered nine comes in very handy for the NT game.

After 1♣--1 and a 1NT rebid by West, will East pass or bid 2? The matchpoint bidders will pass, knowing partner has at least 2-3 diamonds.

In third chair, West opens 1♣, North bids 1, and East can't do much. It isn't safe to raise clubs with only three. If it passes back to West, he can reopen with a double and East will come to life with her six diamonds and all useful cards. Now the ball is in South's court--with four hearts, will she let the opponents buy the contract? Even vulnerable, it's tempting to get in on the act(but safer not to!)
