1. NAME
The name of the Club shall be the Dartmouth & District Bridge Club (hereinafter called “The Club”) and will function under the auspice of an elected President.
2. OBJECTS
To promote the playing of Contract Bridge in accordance with International Rules and to provide suitable facilities for the playing thereof in Dartmouth.
3. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
(i) The affairs of the Club shall be managed by a Committee consisting of the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and three other Committee Members. Three shall form a quorum. All of them shall be elected to hold office for one year, by the members at the Annual General Meeting.
(ii) The Committee shall have the power to co-opt other members to fill any vacancy on the Committee during the year.
(iii) Any Committee member who is willing to continue in office shall be eligible for nomination for re-election.
(iv) The Chairman shall have the casting vote at all meetings.
4. MEMBERSHIP
(i) The membership of the Club shall be determined by the Committee, who shall have the power to limit or extend it at their discretion. Candidates for election to the Club shall be proposed and seconded by members of the Club and elected by a majority of the Committee.
(ii) Should the conduct of any member, in the opinion of the Committee, be detrimental to the character and interests of the Club, the Committee shall be empowered firstly to inform the member in question of his or her misdemeanour and, if the conduct still persists, then to withdraw membership.
(iii) Any member may introduce a guest (other than a person whose membership has ceased pursuant to Clause 4 (ii) above), on the payment of a fee per playing session to be fixed by the Committee from time to time. The same guest may be so introduced for a maximum of three occasions during the Club year.
5. THE CLUB YEAR
The Club year shall run from 1st April to the end of March of the next year and an Annual Subscription at the rate to be fixed by the Committee shall be payable in advance on the 1st April annually.
6. FEE PER PLAYING SESSION
Members shall pay a fee for each playing session attended, at a rate to be fixed by the Committee from time to time by reference to the cost of accommodation, heating, refreshments and any other expenses directly related to playing sessions.
7. MEETINGS OF MEMBERS
An Annual General Meeting (of which not less that seven days’ notice must be given in writing) shall be held in March of each year to conduct the following business :-
(i) To receive a report from the Chairman on the activities of the Club during the previous year.
(ii) To receive a report from the Treasurer to include a statement of income and expenditure covering the previous year.
(iii) To elect Officers and Committee Members.
(iv) To fix the amount of the annual subscription for the current year.
(v) To deal with any other matters, should they arise.
8. EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETINGS
The Committee may convene an Extraordinary Meeting of members at any time and shall be required to do so upon the requisition in writing of not less than five members (which requisition shall state the purpose of the Meeting) by giving not less than fourteen days notice to all members stating the business to be conducted at the meeting.
9. QUORUMS FOR MEETINGS
Quorums for Meetings shall be as follows:-
(i) Committee Meetings – three members of the Committee.
(ii) Annual General Meetings – not less than 25% of members entitled to attend and vote, present in person.
(iii) Extraordinary General Meetings – not less than 25% of members entitled to attend and vote, present in person.
10. RULES AND ETHICS
Members shall observe the International Rules for Contract Bridge and will accept the ruling of any Member of the Committee in the event of any dispute arising out of those rules or of any persistent non-observance of the ethics of Contract Bridge.
A member of the Committee from whom a ruling is sought may defer giving that ruling if he or she wishes to consult other members of the Committee before doing so.
11. THE PLAYING OF BRIDGE
Duplicate Bridge sessions will be run by a Director, nominated by the Chairman, who will decide which movement will be used. He/she will also arrange the table numbering and be responsible for the discipline of the game e.g. the movement of the boards and dealing with any infringements.
