In 2018 there have been some exciting competitions, but the Pavlos Astreos pairs beats them all for suspense. Nineteen pairs competed in this premier pairs event, with defending champions Frosso and Philippos trying to retain their trophy and finish a very successful year on a high. The morning session saw their national team mates George and Georgios get an extremely impressive 71% to lead them and the field by a seemingly uncatchable 11%.
True champions are nothing if not fighters, however, and Frosso - Philippos had their reputation as comeback specialists to live up to. The afternoon session saw them play some amazing bridge, forcing opponents to make difficult choices and capitalizing on them, in addition to some controlled aggressive bidding which enabled them to bid and make contracts which earned them the required tops. They got over 90% from the last three boards of the competition, earning them an equally impressive 69.5% for the afternoon and just pipped the two Georges with a 65.34% overall score.
George and Georgios showed why they are one of the top two pairs in Cyprus with the amazing morning performance. They couldn't quite keep the morning's momentum, but still earned a very creditable second place with a 64.78% overall score, just half a top behind their team mates. They can look forward to 2019 with confidence and for sure their time will come.
Third were Annita and Panos with an extremely creditable 61.50% score. Panos has made a very impresssive (re)entry into Cyprus bridge and we are sure that he will do very well in 2019.
Georgios, Philippos, Frosso, Panos and George - the three winning pairs with Annita missing
