REPORT OF THE PRESIDENTS CUP AT BRADFORD 2016.
The weekend saw the end of yet another Royal Ascot, and we were challenged with running against the thoroughbreds of the northern counties bridge elite in the Presidents Cup. Saturday saw us off to a good start and to everyone's amazement, at the end of the day we were left leading the field, even a short head against the favourites, Manchester. At the start of play on the Sunday, we all had great expectations, hoping to maintain the pace with the pack and after three sessions with one to go, we were still holding on to second place with Manchester (our bete noire) to play. Alas, it seemed as though we had been heavily handicapped for that last furlong and I had forgotten to crack the whip, our hopes of a photo finish were soon diminished with Manchester literally galloping away and left us standing in a disappointing fifth position with a lesson on how to SLAM BID, we seriously must have some professional training on slam bidding.
I would like to congratulate all our players who participated and for playing so well in what was yet another very successful event; our thanks must go to David Stevenson for all his organisation and directing; a special thanks must go to the Ladies of the Bradford Bridge Club on serving up a superb lunch, to which we all over indulged, I think this was the governing factor in our poor finish.
Once again, many thanks to the players for giving up their weekend to represent the county.
The President's Cup was played on June 27th
The Cumbria Team consisted of Babs Matthews, Tim Matthews, Ian Reeves, Ken Johnston, Peter Mollart, William Thompson, Adam Aitken and Ian Smith.
