Beginning Bridge

This foundation course of bridge classes (divided into four modules) is based on 'Bridge for All', the learn and play programme developed by the EBU (English Bridge Union). It is suitable for people who have never played bridge before or those who have played a little social bridge and want to learn more.

You will be playing the cards from the very first session. The course follows a structured programme. Each class has teaching on the day's topic, including guided learning, quizzes and group tasks. There is then a refreshments break, followed by a play session using prepared deals to practice the ideas learnt.

All the basics of bridge are covered. You will learn how to assess the cards you are dealt, how to exchange information with your partner using the language of 'bidding', and how to play the cards. If you are on the defending side, you will learn how to work as a team to prevent the contract from being made!

By the end of the course, you will have all the basic skills and knowledge to be able to play a reasonable game of bridge.

Bridge for All

All Bridge for All students receive the workbook which accompanies the course. This includes notes on all the bridge lessons and exercises for use in the classes and at home. There are summaries and quizzes to check your understanding, together with practice play hands with commentaries.

All students can become complimentary members of the EBU for one year (completely optional), and receive the magazine 'English Bridge' and the special magazine 'The Ruffian' - produced for student members. There is also an EBU helpline for all your bridge-related queries.

'Quickstart' course

'Quickstart' - an Introduction to Bridge

This is a 6-week course which assumes no prior knowledge of Bridge. The aim is to get people playing straight away.

The course begins with how to value your hand, and basic card-play

Then you will learn about bidding as a way of exchanging information with your partner

Although there is some teaching, the focus is on learning by playing, so you will be playing the cards from the outset.

All sessions are accompanied by information sheets.

(Quickstart students are invited to join the Monday night sessions to practice what they have learnt.

If you then want to learn more, the 'Beginning Bridge' foundation course takes you through everything you need to know to play a reasonable game of Bridge at a Bridge club)

Refresher course

Refresher course - Basic Bidding

This is a 10-week revision course for those who have attended classes previously and need to refresh their basic bidding. It is Intermediate/Improver level, and aims to take players a step beyond the Beginners course

Formal teaching will be kept to a minimum. The sessions start with a short orientation quiz, and then concentrate on bidding and discussion of set hands.

(N.B. This course is not suitable as an introduction to Bridge or for those who have been away from the game for a long time - consider joining a Beginners module instead)
