INTER CLUB LEAGUE FINAL ROUND  RESULTS

The final round of this years inter club league competition was played on Sunday 10th April. Both our teams had "away" matches. The "A" team went to Hartlepool and faced a team that were top of the league by some margin - in fact they had won every single match!  There was an outside chance of us being promoted to Division "C" if we had a big win and overtook Whitley Bay. Sadly that wasn't to be, however we did record an excellent win by 12 points to 8. The match was strongly contested as one might expect from a team defending their unbeaten record. All 8 of our players distinguished themselves with perhaps Phyllis & James  edging the north/south boards and Angela & Derek the east/west ones.

The "B" team went to Middlesbrough. Their opponents had had a poor season and were at the time in bottom position in the league. With our "B" team only one place above them it was a crucial match to try and leapfrog over Castle Morpeth and avoid relegation. In the end, despite some spirited play from our team, it was the "home" team that came away with the honours by 16 points to 4. Sadly we did not avoid relegation. The final league placings are as follows:

Hartlepool          72

Whitley Bay "B" 56

Ch/le/St "A"       51

Middlesbrough   44

Castle Morpeth   40

Ch/le/St "B"       37

Many thanks to all our players who have participated in this years league matches. I hope that you have all enjoyed the experience and look forward to renewing the challenge when the new season opens in September.

AUDREY LIGHTLEY MEMORIAL TROPHY

One of Audreys' memorable remarks as we slithered across the ice, hands full of party food, making our way from car park to our bridge Christmas Party night was "we really ought to have our Christmas party on June 25th and not in the middle of winter!"
Your committee, having given much thought as to how we might honour one of our most loved and hard working founder members, felt that a competition for the Audrey Lightley Memorial Trophy should most appropriately be held each year on the Thursday nearest to June 25th!
The selected trophy is a beautiful cut glass lead crystal rose bowl with a silver mesh top.

THE 2016 COMPETITION

The Audrey Lightley Trophy competition took place this year on Thursday 30th June, somewhat later than normal owing to the interruption of something called a referendum! Once again the competition was keenly contested and (once again!) resulted in a win for Betty Grievson and Trevor Blacklock. Many congratulations to Betty and Trevor on another stellar performance.

The presentation took place on 14thJuly with Liz Bratton handing over the beautiful Rose Bowl trophy for Betty and Trevor to keep for another year. Liz was Audrey's bridge partner for many years and brought back many happy memories of one of our best loved founder members.

In another reminder of Audrey, wine, tea and fresh baked scones were duly consumed!
