Chairman’s Remarks

Chelmsford Bridge Club should be proud of the contribution that the club and its members have made to the promotion of bridge in the club and in the wider community over the last twelve months. I would like to highlight the following areas:

Success of our Club Teams

The club had another successful year, winning the Ray Cornell Trophy and representing Essex in the Garden Cities trophy. The club also finished third in the Fletcher. Congratulations to all involved.

Chelmsford Bridge Club has also embraced the new “friendly league”. This is newly established inter-club teams-of-eight competition, aimed at encouraging and developing players who are newer to competitive bridge. The team have played three matches (winning one, losing one and with one tied-result). They are currently in second place in the league.

Two teams compete in the South East Essex League under the Chelmsford banner, with Chelmsford Green finishing fifth in Division 1 and Chelmsford Blue finishing third in Division two.

Success of our players in Essex and Other Competitions

This has been another successful year with a number of Chelmsford players performing well including wins in the George Curtis (Essex Swiss Teams), the Essex Mixed Pairs, the Suffolk Club Teams and the Brighton Light Teams.

Eleven players represented Essex in the Eastern Counties League or Metropolitan Cup.

Service to Bridge

We were very pleased that Tony Philpott chose to be presented with the Dimmie Fleming award at Chelmsford Bridge Club. This prestigious award is bestowed by the English Bridge Union in recognition of long and distinguished service to the County.

Essex Contract Bridge Association included four Chelmsford members on their committee and two Life Members.

Developing Newer Players

Members of the club have generously given their time to support the development of newer players. A number of members have supported the Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon clubs here at the Tennis Club. Members have supported the County’s “Play with an Expert” competition (including the winner this year!)  Thank You

We owe a debt to the members who support the club to run. I would like to thank:

  • Our directors for ensuring the smooth and pleasant operation of club nights.
  • Our scorers for prompt and accurate scores (often based on inadequate travellers).
  • Our committee for all of their work (seen and un-seen).

Election of Committee for 2012-2013

All Committee members were willing to stand again.  The meeting agreed the re-election of all existing members as there were no other nominations.

Any Other Business

John Williams proposed a vote of thanks to the Committee and their helpers for all the work done during the last year.

The Committee asked if the members would like a repeat of last year’s Christmas session, with an Individual competition. This was agreed by those present.

The meeting concluded with the presentation of Trophies.
