Unfortunately the Chelmsford Team of Eight were unsuccessful in the Regional Final (Held at Peterborough Bridge Club) of the Garden Cities Trophy. The team won one out of seven matches.

A brave effort from the team:

• Ted Cockle, John Williams, Neil Bresler, David Cooper, Val Mollison, Brian Davies, Alison Spencer and Audrey Hartley.

Chelmsford entered three teams in the Helliar - Essex County Club Teams. The teams finished as follows:

• 4th - Audrey Hartley, Alison Spencer, Val Mollison, Brian Davies
• 8th - Ted Cockle, John Williams, David Cooper, Neil Bresler
• 17th - Richard Eason, David Sparkes, George & Joan McGuffin

The combined placing of the two best Chelmsford teams was high enough to ensure that Chelmsford won the Ray Cornell Trophy and the right to represent Essex in the Garden Cities Trophy

Val mollison and Sandy Smith finished second in the Gwen Herga - The Essex Ladies Pairs.

Congratulations to Val and Paul Mollison, who were winners of the Essex Mixed Pairs

Val Mollison and Brian Davies with team-mates Paul Mollison and Bernie Hunt finished second in the Tony Kelvin - Essex Teams of Four.

They finished equal on VPs with the winners but lost missed out on the head to head.

Martin and Sandy Smith and teamates finished second in the “B” Final.

Chelmsford finished third in The Essex County Teams of Eight Competition for Clubs

Chelmsford finished in third place behind Thorpe Bay and Mountnessing with a score of +58 IMPs. Well played to all of the Chelmsford team:

• Brian Davies & Val Mollison.
• George & Joan McGuffin

A certificate bestowing the presigious Dimmie Fleming award was presented to Tony Philpott (right in the picture), by John Williams (Hon. Chairman of Essex County Bridge Assoc.) at our club evening on Monday 23rd September.

The EBU describes the award as follows:

"The intent of the Dimmie Fleming award is to publicly recognise those people who do not hold an official (i.e. EBU) office, but have, for a long time - say, 20 years or so – worked hard for bridge in administration at County level. Board Directors, Vice Presidents, EBU employees and Panel Tournament Directors are excluded from nomination. However, after leaving office, such people are eligible for an award, if they too have worked hard for bridge at County level."

Tony has been an Essex member for over 50 years and at various points he has been involved in the selection process and was County Captain for a number of years.  He has been on the Committee since 1975 when he became Treasurer and has finally retired from the post after 38 years, he remains on the Committee. Tony is a Grand Master and continues to play for the county A team.

Congraulations to Sandy and Martin Smith

Part of the team (with Sue and Chris Taylor) winning the Brighton Lite Teams. The team had the finished 6th in the Saturday teams and 3rd in the Sunday teams - but had the best overall aggregate for the two days (beating a team of Norwegian internationals who arrived too late to play in the main Swiss Teams).

Janet L'Estrange and Alan Jones finished 16th Nationally playing at our club on Monday 29th July.

Well done to them!

John Williams and Brian Davies with Val and Paul Mollison won the final of the Essex Teams of Four Plate.

Congratulation to the winning team of Chelmsford players in the George Curtis Cup:

• Audrey Hartley and Alison Spencer; David Cooper and John Williams

The George Curtis Cup is the Essex Swiss Teams of Four Competition (although it was run as a multi-teams event this year). Audrey, Alison, David and John were clear winners finishing with 100 VPs - 17 higher than their nearest rivals. In equal second place were:

• Val Mollison and Brian Davies playing with Paul Mollison and Bernie Hunt.

Martin Smith and Ted Cockle (together with Ian Moss and Mike Graham) won the final of the 2012/13 Essex Teams of Four yesterday (Friday 7th June) against a team captained by Peter Oake.

Well done!!

Congratulations to Neil Bresler and David Cooper who finished as runners-up in the Suffolk Championship Teams.

Neil and David, playing with Roger and Jill Tattersfield, lost in the final to the Hanley team. They had previously beaten a team including England international Divid Price in the semi-final.
