Youth Bridge Surrey and EBED Spring 2022

England Under 16 Team

Giorgio Provenza EBED Chief Executive runs the England Under 16 team. They have lost a significant proportion of their funding since the pandemic. Giorgio recently reported:

The main achievements of the U16 squad under my tenure can be summarized in 3 main areas:

1) Medals

2) Number of kids involved

3) Gender balance

1) Medals. Before my time - in the three years since the U16 had been added as an age group - the U16 team had won zero medals. None. Since I took over in October 2017 they have won four - a world silver and three European bronzes. And this despite Covid has lost us the best part of two years. Add to that the recent win in the Peggy Bayer (the equivalent of the Camrose for U21!) and the win in the Three Seas Trophy a few years back.

2) Children involved. When I took over, the squad comprised of six children. Today I have twenty-three and over the period more than forty have been part of the squad and thirty-three have debuted playing internationally, either FtF or online.

3) Gender balance. The squad had five boys and a girl when I started. That is pretty much the (im)balance of the older age groups as well. Nowadays we are close to a 50/50 balance between girls and boys. And not only are the girls represented, they get selected as well. The team that won bronze at the Euros in Norway 2019 had three boys and three girls (all in a mixed partnership). That was the very first time in England (or BGB, for that matter) history that a team opened to both sexes - in any age group, from juniors to seniors - won a medal having three female players in it. We went further than that. The team that crashed their older counterparts in the Peggy Bayer had four girls and two boys.

Maybe, I should spend some words on the quality of the bridge they can produce. Make no mistake, by the time they leave the squad they are competent players at least, with some already in the higher echelon of the NGS pages. Just as an example, Will Battersby - that Surrey has very generously agreed to sponsor has an NGS to date of 62.81%. That is borderline AD (and higher than mine)!

June Middleton runs youth bridge in Surrey and recently reported

In Surrey, we had approximately 50 taking part in the Surrey School’s Cup events back in 2016 but even after two years of Covid chaos in schools still manged 84 participants this year (having only decided to go ahead three weeks in advance of the event taking place), down on two years ago when we had 108, but I hope to build back to that number next year.

Joan Bennett of Gloucestershire has done a great job this year in getting a set of schools leagues off the ground using RealBridge. Cheltenham continues to host an event in the Easter holidays.

There is a junior teach in planned by EBED  for the beginning of Sept, followed by Bowles Rock in the October half term.

After that, I am hoping to get a series of one day events over the winter months starting with Wimbledon in November providing some continuity of F2F teaching for those who want it.    This should provide a framework for children to learn bridge and put their skills to use over the winter months.

I am under no allusions that we are operating from a very small base and I am disappointed that we are really only dealing with Private schools at present but if we can get a consistent framework in place then maybe we can get some of the State schools involved.

Maybe you know someone young who plays or would like to or could help June in some capacity.

TASK 500 is in The Telegraph! Click to read Tom Townsend's article featuring a hand from Friday.

  TASK 500 Board Marathon

Tony's Results are here

507 Boards completed.

Over £4,500 has been raised so far

Tony played 500 boards with a variety of partners between 20th-26th November in order to raise money for TASK, a registered charity that provides financial aid to Kenyan schoolchildren who would be unable to continue their education without our help.

We usually support TASK through sales made from refreshments and other events at Caterham Bridge Club run throughout the year, but of course, present circumstances have made this impossible.

You can make a real difference through your donations.

During the week Tony played with Tom Townsend, Paul HackettGordon RainsfordNick SandqvistStefan Skorchev, Tim Warren and many others

Please click here for information on TASK, and details about how you can contribute. You can also visit our GoFundMe page here.

If you would like to Gift aid your donation, please complete the form and email or post it to us. Please click here to download a Gift Aid form.

Letter from EBED Chairman

EBED Spring Simultaneous Pairs

Thank you for taking part

Dear Tony

On behalf of English Bridge Education and Development I want to thank you for participating in the recent EBED Spring Sim Pairs. I hope your members enjoyed playing in the event.

Over 130 clubs, and 2300 pairs, took part, raising in excess of £11,000 for the charity. Please pass on our thanks to those who took part as their entry fee is helping the charity in its work - and as it was a fundraising event for the charity, there is no VAT levied, so they will likely take satisfaction from knowing it will all go to EBED. In this specific instance the proceeds are helping EBED in its work researching and promoting the health and social benefits of playing bridge.

As you may have read in the recent issue of English Bridge magazine (April issue, page 37), one of the charity’s Trustees, Caroline Small, is working with researchers at Stirling University to look at the social benefits of playing bridge. An early part of this work is the distribution of a survey to both bridge players, and non-bridge players, which will allow a comparison of the affect of playing bridge on the respondent's perception of various topics. This will be ready in the near future, and will be distributed when available.

This is just the first stage of a larger project that will take place over the coming months and years. If you would like to continue to support EBED’s work you can do so by entering the EBED Autumn Sim Pairs which will take place 5th to 9th September. You can also help us simply by making use of the services we provide – for example by joining a TD training course or coaching juniors through the Junior Award Scheme. Information on all of EBED’s work is available on our website – www.ebedcio.org.uk.

If you have any ideas, or queries, on the work EBED is doing please don’t hesitate to contact EBED’s Business Manager – Richard Banbury – or its Education Manager – Sue Maxwell.

Thank you again for your participation in the Sim Pairs.

Andrew Petrie

EBED Chairman

PS we raised £212.80 at Caterham

Bridge helping ladies stay healthy and active into their 90s

BBC Woman's Hour on Radio 4 on the 21st April looked at how women in their 90s have managed to stay healthy and active. Two interviewees from Birmingham cited bridge as one of the biggest influences on their prolonged good health, noting both the benefits of keeping the mind active, and also the social benefits of playing bridge after the death of their husbands.

The interview is available on the BBC website for a limited time - scroll to 15:00 for the start of the interview (which lasts around six minutes).

The EBED Sim Pairs event, which takes place in the first week of May, will be raising funds to help English Bridge Education and Development undertake work relating to the social and health benefits linked to playing bridge, including combatting social isolation and cognitive decline. We are participating on all 4 days.

How does Bridge work?

Bridge is a partnership game for four people deriving from the much older game of whist. It uses a standard pack of 52 cards in four suits, 13 of which are randomly dealt to each player in each deal.

The objective is for each partnership to win as many tricks as possible, each trick comprising one card from each of the four hands dealt. Tricks can be won by high cards - aces are high, followed by the other honour cards:king, queen and jack and then the 10 down to the 2 - or by trumps, cards of a designated suit which always outrank cards in any other suit.

Each deal consists of two distinct stages - the bidding and the play of the cards to the tricks. During the bidding the trump suit is decided and a target number of tricks is set, which must be won before any points can be scored for the side winning the contract.

That makes bridge different from whist is that there is a dummy - one of the four hands which is placed face up for all to see during the card-playing stage. This is always the hand which partners the declarer - the player who has won the auction and contracted to take a particular number of tricks -always more than half the total of 13 available. The other two players form the defenders, whose aim is to prevent the contract being made.

The bidding is conducted in a special bridge language where the words are the same all over the world, but the meanings given to the bids made can vary enormously.Much of the skill at this stage is in making sure you and your partner 'talk the same language' - that you mean the same things by your bids. There's plenty of scope for misunderstandings here and bridge players have been known to be quite vociferous in arguing for their own interpretation!

The card play stage requires all kinds of skills - planning, counting, reasoning, working out probabilities and often a bit of cunning and deception as well.Again there's a need for teamwork - the defending side has to pull together if it is to do well.

When a player first looks at his hand, he needs to assess how good it is - how likely is it to take lots of tricks in conjunction with partner's hand?

Obviously, the honour cards are important, so we assign a value to each of them: four points for an ace, three for a king, two for a queen and one for a jack.

This same method of valuation is used in MiniBridge as well – the simplified form of the game, which is generally taught as an introduction to bridge. The total points in a hand give a pretty good idea of its strength, though possession of a long suit – five or six or more cards in one suit – can also be very useful, especially if you can contrive for that suit to be trumps.

Isn't it really just a gambling game though, based on the luck of the cards?

Absolutely not. There is some luck in any one deal, though over a period of time this should even out. But there is a form of the game - duplicate bridge -which eliminates the luck element completely.

This is because the same deals are played by different partnerships - the hands are duplicated to allow this, which sounds rather complicated to organise but actually isn't at all. So you are just trying to do better than others holding exactly the same cards - pure skill, in fact, with no element of betting or gambling.

Duplicate bridge is not a mere 'game of cards' - it is played at many schools where 'cards' are banned but bridge is encouraged because its educational value is recognised. This is the sort of bridge promoted by the English Bridge Union(EBU), the governing body for duplicate bridge in this country.

Duplicate bridge is a real 'sport of the mind', as evidenced by the fact that it has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a demonstration sport, the first step towards its inclusion in the Olympic Games. It is as keenly contested as any sport with national, European and World Championships. There are open, women's,mixed and junior events and we are proud that teams from this country have been Champions in many of these events in the past and, we hope, will be again in the future!
