| STAYMAN |
Very few pairs are using Stayman. You will find that most regular club players do use this convention and I would suggest that you give it a go. Discuss this with your regular partner and refer to page 119 of "Beginning Bridge" for the details. Then at least give it a trial.
If you agree to play Stayman it must apply to all boards you are dealt in a particular session. You can't opt in and out from one board to the next. And when you are playing Stayman, if your partner opens 1NT, and you bid 2C - asking for four card majors - your partner must announce "Stayman" to tell the opposition that your 2C bid was conventional. It is worth noting that if partner now responds 2D this is also conventional, stating that partner does not hold a four card major, but this does not need to be announced or alerted.
You also need to be aware that when playing Stayman you can no longer use 2C as a weak take-out. If you have a weak unbalanced hand with five clubs it is usually best to leave the bidding in 1NT and hope! But with six clubs bid 2C (Stayman) first and then rebid 3C over whatever partner says. Your partner should get the message and pass.
