Bridge For Fun uses a different scoring method to other clubs. Known as Butler scoring, it is best explained by way of example.
Hand 1 - Results
N/S
1. +170
2. +140
3. +140
4. +110.
At traditional duplicate, each pair receives 2 points for every score it beats, and 1 point for each score it equals.
Thus N/S 1 will score 6 points, N/S 2&3 3, N/S 4 0. Quite a range of results for a small difference in scores. In Butler scoring, the average score is determined (here +140) and the difference between the actual score and the average is calculated and converted into IMPs using the conversion chart in the middle of your scorecard. (aha - that's what that is). So N/S 1 has a difference of +30 which is +1 IMP., N/S 2&3 score 0, and N/S 4 scores -1 IMP.
By contrast Hand 2 results
N/S
1. +620
2. +140
3. +140
4. +110
At traditional duplicate, each pair will score exactly the same as on hand 1. So the size of the win isn't given any credit.
With Butler scoring. N/S will be given (620 - 140 (av)) ie +480 which converts into +10 IMPs.
There are pros and cons of course, but Bridge For Fun believes that Butler scoring better reflects the feel good factor when a large score has been obtained.
