Congratulations to the Brigands!

The club would like to congratulate the Biggar Brigands team (Cathy Cursiter, Maggie Dunbar, Stephen Hagan and Peter Woodifield plus reserve May Cameron) on their recent successes and promotion to Division 1 in the SBU Bronze League, played online on Wednesday evenings.  Having entered the competition during lockdown and starting off in Division 8, they were promoted after each iteration of 7/8 matches and remain in Division 1 for the new league which restarted on 28thSeptember.

A second Biggar team, the Tinto Tigers (Archie Hunter, Marion Macmillan, Deirdre Gardiner and Myra Tait) have also entered the competition and we wish them luck.

Very Sad News

The memorial service for the life of Jane Molineux was held on Friday 22nd July in Biggar Kirk with many members of Biggar Bridge Club in attendance. There is a YouTube video of the service which can be accessed HERE. Jane was a long standing member of the club, was Chairman from 2019-2021 and served on the committee for many years.  Jane and her late husband, Peter, a Naval officer in the Submarine division, moved to Biggar on their retirement and after his death due to a stroke, Jane became involved with many groups within the community – the camera club, the music club and of course the bridge club. A copy of the eulogy, written by her son Patrick, has been placed in the club room but I’d like to quote a short extract from this which hopefully sums up her boundless energy and fierce spirit: “How many 80+ year olds catch their first piranha in the Amazon? Are strapped to their beds in the Arctic Circle on a small boat in a Force 10 gale, mum giggling ‘Luce, pass the whisky’?”

It was a privilege to be her friend and to have spent many happy moments in her company. Jane, you will be missed but never forgotten!

Cathy

Jane's great grandson, Leon Carne, drew this robin, taking comfort from his firm belief that she will come back as a robin, a bird that she loved very much.

Sad News - Jim Jack RIP.

The club was saddened to learn that Jim Jack passed away peacefully on Saturday evening. He was 93 years old but still remarkably active and alert, keeping up to date with bridge news and challenges and even driving to Falkirk to visit his family two days before he died. Jim was a founder member of Biggar Bridge Club and a regular member until the pandemic prevented face to face bridge. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

The funeral was held on Wed 20th April at 4pm at West Lothian Crematorium with several members of the Club in attendance.

Christmas Lunch 2021
Christmas Lunch 2021

On Monday 13th December, we finally had a face to face meeting of 25 members of the Club in the form of our annual Christmas lunch. The venue was the Cornhill Castle who served us welcome drinks followed by an excellent three course lunch. Chairman Colin Young welcomed everyone and thanked the committee for organising the event. Our members were entertained by Michel McKenzie who gave us a wonderful and amusing talk on his life as an actor. Following this, we had a quiz. Hopefully, it will not be as long before we get another opportunity to meet in person.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH 2019
CHRISTMAS LUNCH 2019
Biggar Bridge Club held its annual Christmas lunch on Sunday 8th December in the Cornhill Castle Hotel. Jane Molineux, chairman, welcomed 57 members. After lunch, Michael Mackenzie recited some amusing bridge Malapropisms and the "Snake" a delightful poem by DH Lawrence. There followed several hands of bridge yet again ably directed by Tony Smith. Thanks to the committee for organising the event, to Philip and Wallace for transporting tables etc, to Maura for her Irish Bingo and to many others who contributed to the success of the afternoon.  The committee would welcome feedback so if any member wishes to do so,  please comment before the next committee meeting on 14th Jan 2020.
